The eerie glow of dusk faded, leaving the team submerged in an oppressive darkness that seemed alive. The twisted branches of dead trees surrounded the ZETU squad, their skeletal outlines clawing at the pale sky. The mist thickened, swirling like smoke with an unnatural sentience. It was deathly silent—no birds, no wind, just the crackling of burning debris in the distance and the unsettling groans of approaching zombies.

"Keep your eyes sharp," Captain Marcus Kane growled, his voice cutting through the tension. His shotgun gleamed faintly in the dim light, ready to dispatch whatever emerged from the void.

"Something's... wrong here," muttered Officer Riley "Quick Shot" Bennett, her sniper rifle aimed at the horizon. "These aren't normal infected. Look at their silhouettes."

The fog began to shift, revealing shapes emerging from the gloom. At first, they resembled the undead ZETU had encountered countless times, but as they drew closer, their grotesque features became apparent. These were far worse—twisted forms with jagged, branch-like appendages, their decayed faces hollow and eyeless, leaking black mist.

"Eyes up! We've got company!" yelled Sergeant Jenna "Blaze" Hart. She fired a controlled blast of her flamethrower, sending a wave of light and heat into the advancing horde. The mist recoiled briefly, but the creatures didn't falter. Instead, they let out an unholy, guttural wail that seemed to vibrate the air itself.

"They're adapting!" shouted Officer Derek "Shield" Coleman, holding his riot shield firm against the impact of one lunging beast. He swung his baton into its skull, shattering the creature, but it dissolved into black mist and began reforming. "What the hell are these things?"

"Brain, we need intel!" Kane barked.

Tech Specialist Ethan "Brain" O'Connor's fingers flew over his tablet. "It's the fog—it's not natural! It's binding them, regenerating them! We need to find the source or they'll keep coming!"

"Figures," Huntress muttered, loading her pistols with incendiary rounds. "It's always a cursed fog."

The creatures closed in, their movements erratic yet disturbingly deliberate. The squad fell into a tight defensive formation, fighting back-to-back as the horde pressed against them. The sound of gunfire and flames filled the air, but the fog seemed to absorb the noise, muting their efforts.

"There!" Brain shouted, pointing through the gloom. In the distance, a faint, pulsing light emanated from what appeared to be an ancient, crumbling tree. Its roots writhed like snakes, and black mist poured from its hollow core.

"That's our target!" Kane roared. "Blaze, clear us a path!"

Blaze unleashed a torrent of fire, carving a temporary corridor through the horde. The team sprinted toward the tree, their boots crunching over decayed remains and charred earth. The Mistwalkers followed relentlessly, their unearthly moans intensifying as if warning ZETU not to approach.

As they reached the tree, Huntress examined it quickly. "It's alive—some kind of infection hub. We need explosives!"

"On it!" Blaze planted charges around the base of the tree. The squad held the line as the horde surged.

"Detonating!" Blaze yelled, diving for cover. The explosion rocked the forest, and the glowing fog dissipated. The Mistwalkers disintegrated into ash, leaving only silence.

But as the team regrouped, Kane's voice was grim. "If there's one of these... there could be more."
