Elena Voss fell forward onto her hands as the pain surged through her chest.

It felt like fire spreading beneath her skin.

The faint crooked eye scar glowed brighter, its twisted lines pulsing as if something behind it was pushing outward again.

Elena gasped for breath.

“No... stay closed...” she whispered.

Above her, the massive seeker watched silently.

Its enormous silver eye reflected the broken street, the ruined buildings... and the small human kneeling before it.

Waiting.

Testing.

The guardian creature stepped closer to Elena, his claws hovering protectively near her shoulders.

“Elena, listen to me,” he said urgently.

“You cannot fight the door with fear.”

She clenched her teeth.

“What does that even mean?” she growled through the pain.

The seeker’s voice rolled through her mind again.

The door is not closed.

The scar pulsed harder.

A thin thread of black energy leaked from the glowing mark.

The guardian’s eyes widened.

“Elena!”

She forced her hand against the scar, pressing hard as if she could physically hold it shut.

“I’m not letting it open again!”

The seeker lowered its massive head closer.

Wind blasted through the street as its wings shifted.

Dust swirled around Elena like a storm.

All doors open under pressure.

Elena looked up at the enormous creature.

Her voice shook.

“I’m not a door!”

The silver eye narrowed.

You are the keeper.

Another pulse exploded from her chest.

This time the black energy twisted upward into the air like smoke.

The guardian growled.

“It’s forcing the test!”

Elena’s vision blurred.

She could feel the same terrible force she had felt before.

The thing behind the door.

Pushing.

Waiting.

Trying to come through again.

“No... no... not again...” 𝒻𝘳𝘦𝘦𝘸ℯ𝒷𝘯𝘰𝑣ℯ𝑙.𝘤𝑜𝘮

The seeker’s voice echoed calmly inside her mind.

Then hold it.

The words confused her.

“What?”

Hold the door.

The guardian froze.

For the first time since the creature arrived, surprise flickered across his face.

“Elena...” he whispered.

“She’s not trying to open it.”

Elena gasped.

“She’s trying to... what?”

The guardian looked at the seeker.

Then back at her.

“It’s teaching you.”

Another pulse surged through the mark.

The darkness tried to push outward again.

But this time Elena did not resist with panic.

She closed her eyes.

Slowly breathing.

Feeling the pressure behind the door.

Feeling the enormous force trying to escape.

But instead of fighting it blindly...

She held it.

Like holding a heavy gate against a storm.

The glowing mark flickered.

The black smoke wavered.

Then slowly—

It stopped growing.

The seeker watched carefully.

Its silver eye reflecting the moment.

Good.

Elena opened her eyes.

The pain in her chest was still there.

But the darkness was no longer spilling out.

It was trapped.

Held.

The guardian creature stared in disbelief.

“She’s controlling it...”

The seeker slowly straightened its towering body.

Its wings unfolded again, stirring the air across the city.

The door remains closed.

Elena looked up at the massive creature.

Breathing hard.

“So... I passed your test?”

For a long moment, the seeker said nothing.

Then its enormous wings beat once.

The wind roared through the ruins.

For now.

The creature rose slowly into the sky again.

Higher.

Higher.

Until it disappeared back into the clouds above the city.

Silence returned to the broken streets.

Elena collapsed backward onto the pavement.

Exhausted.

The guardian knelt beside her.

“You did it,” he said quietly.

But his eyes remained fixed on the clouds.

Because the seeker had not attacked.

It had only tested the door.

And if one seeker had come...

Others would follow.

Stronger ones.

Older ones.

And next time...

They might not come to test the door.

They might come to open it.
