Chapter 321: Actions And Words.

Arissa was stunned at Nicklaus’s words. Her face turned red and the butterflies in her stomach set themselves free and rejoiced in her.

Possessive already?

Woah! She screamed in her thoughts. She loved where all of this was going. He sounded like he wanted her to be his forever and her body had jolts of electricity passing through her bones, making sure the happiness in her heart got into every one of them.

She felt a bit overwhelmed and confused by the turns of events. Nicklaus has always been possessive but this level was another higher level of it.

"I_"

She was cut off from her words by the opening of the door ward and immediately, her mood switched from excited to alert.

She prepared her feet to sit up swiftly and walk away if it should be her mother but when the person appeared, she recognized the person to be Collins as he walked out of the door.

Remembering the awkward moment they had exchanged ever since she came into the hospital, she gave him a bit of her attention but withdrew her gaze momentarily and concentrated her gaze on her phone.

Collins was hurt by her action and when she stared back at her phone, Arissa blocked the side of her screen with her other palm so Collins would not catch a glimpse of Nicklaus from where he stood.

Nicklaus noticed this short moment of distraction from her and asked, "Who’s that?" he felt her attention to be on someone else and not something else.

"Collins," she replied and then she brought her mouth closer to the phone and said, "Go into the bath, please." her voice was in the lightest whisper.

Nicklaus nodded, winked at her twice, and before her eyes, he socked himself into his bath and continued shaving.

"How do you feel now?" Nicklaus asked.

Arissa nodded, "I feel much better and_"

"We need to talk, Mrs. Wyatt," Collins who stood before the ward door cut her off. He made sure to add her title to remind himself of her status and also to lessen his feelings. He was also paying respect to her husband since he knew it was her husband she was on the phone with.

Arissa faced Collins sharply, "What happened? Did my mother do something?" the question slipped out of her mouth before she could think about it.

"Your mother?" Nicklaus questioned.

A light shocked gasp left Arissa’s lips when she heard Nicklaus question. And that was when she realized she asked a question she shouldn’t have asked.

She can’t believe she once again let her fear get the best out of her. She planned to tell him in person and not over the phone.

Nicklaus continued and contrary to his soft expression, he now looked grim, "You have your mother in the same space as you and decided not to let me know about it?"

Arissa tucked a strand of her hair behind her ear, "That wasn’t how it was meant to be. I wanted to tell you in person and not over the phone. You’d still come over and it makes no sense to have you rushing over because of this." she explained.

Her mother might not be leaving now but she knows Nicklaus. He won’t listen to that but would decide to rush down.

Nicklaus frowned, "You don’t want me rushing down for you? For God’s sake, who do you think you are to me?" he asked, disappointed.

Arissa’s breathing caught up in her throat.

Nicklaus went on, "Do you mean you still don’t know your value in my life after everything?" there was frustration in his voice.

Collins who overheard the questions asked ran his finger through his hair. Every time he stayed around this couple, one thing they would make sure he realized over and over again was that he was a lost case.

Arissa was speechless. Unable to give him an immediate reply, she decided to distract herself a little.

Facing Collins, she pleaded, "Excuse us,"

With a hurtful gulp, Collins granted her wish and walked towards the elevator. At the same moment, Diego appeared and she dismissed him too.

"Give me a moment alone," she ordered.

Diego was hesitant to leave her but when Collins nodded at him that she would be alright, he went back into the elevator and gave Arisa the privacy she demanded.

When the hall became quiet again, Arissa smiled at Nicklaus. "Actions speak louder than words, yes! But sometimes, we need the words for better understanding."

She stood straight, "Your actions can mean a lot of things and if I should assume it, I might be wrong or I might be right. And sometimes, actions mean nothing and could just be an act of kindness or a particular thing everyone receives from that person or you," she told him.

Nicklaus drooped his shaving appliances and walked out of the water, "I won’t be who I am to you twice. I’m this version of myself for you alone." he said.

"Exactly," Arissa almost yelled, "And that’s what I want to know. What am I to you that makes you care so much about me? Aren’t I just a contracted wife, why care so much the way you do? Why be this way for me?" she questioned him.

"Arissa_"

She cut him off, "Give me answers, Nick. Tell me what I am to you. You asked who I think I am to you and honestly, I can’t tell. I want to hear it directly from you and not from my assumptions," she fixed her gaze into his through the phone, "Do you want a future with me or are you waiting for the contract to expire but decided to live in the moment?"

Nicklaus Adam’s apple bulged and Arissa saw it. In return, she too took in a soft gulp at her daring question.

Nicklaus cleared his throat, "Arissa..." he trailed off, not knowing what to say.

"I’m listening," she backed him up when she saw it in his eyes that he was struggling with his emotions and words, "Take your time and explain all of it. I’ll listen even if you say words by words slowly,"

Nicklaus let out a low breath, "Can we talk about this at home?" he requested, trying to control his resounding heart.

Arissa thought over it for a while and then she asked, "Do you promise?"

"I promise," Nicklaus nodded, "But before that, wait until I arrive. Don’t try to get too engaged with your mother,"

Arissa smiled at him, "I will," she replied, staring at him and trying not to think much.
