His Mute Wife: He Can't Sleep After She Left-Chapter 83: She Is More Ruthless Than Anyone
Kiana Sutton went crazy. To prove how much she loved Ethan Sinclair, she jumped into the lotus pond in the middle of the night.
Ethan Sinclair was crazy too. In the second half of the night, he dragged her from the bathroom to the hanging chair on the balcony, then to the bed, not giving Kiana a moment to catch her breath.
For a split second, Kiana felt she saw an angel.
When Kiana woke up again, Ethan was already gone. In that huge room, she was alone, and the place was a total mess.
Dragging her exhausted, aching, and weak body back to The Montpellier Estates, she saw Chelsea Chapman looking like she had something to say but couldn’t get the words out.
"Young Madam... are you... okay?"
"I’m fine. What’s wrong?"
"Um... it’s just..."
Chelsea stammered, unsure what to do!
"If you have something to say, just say it."
Seeing Kiana’s sign language, Chelsea realized she couldn’t avoid it, so she quickly said, "Young Master said, since you like cooking so much, you should prepare meals every day and bring them to Miss Lynch. He said it’s to atone for your father’s sins."
Looking at Kiana’s pale, sickly face, Chelsea felt a pang of sympathy. "Young Madam, don’t be too upset. It’s not a big deal. I’ll make the food, and you just pretend you made it and deliver it to Miss Lynch."
Of course she was upset.
Just last night, she’d jumped into the lotus pond to prove her love for him.
She thought he might at least care a little about their time spent together under the same roof and sheets. But just like always, as soon as he put his pants on, he acted like he didn’t even know her.
But she’d been worrying about how to get close to Kate Lynch, to find a way to get something out of her about the past. And now Ethan Sinclair was giving her that chance.
"No need, I’ll do it myself. If Ethan finds out you’re cooking for me, both of us will probably suffer for it."
"But your cooking..."
Just thinking about the taste made Chelsea want to run to the bathroom and throw up.
Kiana smiled and gestured, "Don’t worry, maybe Miss Lynch is afraid I’ll poison her, and won’t dare eat what I make."
Ethan Sinclair wanted Kiana to deliver food—if she didn’t, he definitely wouldn’t let her off.
She could deliver the food, but whether Kate Lynch ate it was up to her.
So Kiana cooked herself and brought the meal to the hospital.
She hadn’t even seen Kate Lynch yet, but bumped into Evan Shepherd, whom she hadn’t seen in ages.
Evan looked haggard, but he was dressed head to toe in designer labels.
Evan obviously saw her too. He walked toward Kiana—there was no way she could pretend not to notice him.
"Kiana, what brings you to the hospital?"
Seeing the insulated lunch box in her hand, he asked, "Is a family member hospitalized?"
Kiana didn’t know how to face Evan. When she first joined Evercrest Group, Evan helped her a lot—she once considered him a true friend. She’d never expected Evan to stab her in the back.
Kiana shook her head. Her hands occupied by the lunch box, she didn’t sign.
Evan thought Kiana was still angry at him, and gave a bitter laugh. "Kiana, can you spare me a few minutes? I want to talk to you."
She’d intended to say there was nothing left to talk about between them, but she didn’t understand why Evan had done all those things, so she nodded.
They found a quiet, cool bench in the hospital; Evan wiped the dust off courteously before letting Kiana sit.
There were crowds coming and going in the hospital; every day brought new life and death.
Evan gazed toward the inpatient wing, stayed silent a moment, then said, "Kiana...my grandma’s gone."
Kiana froze, suddenly turning to Evan.
Wasn’t his grandma only slightly fractured, with some soft tissue injury? How could...
"After Grandma was admitted, I had the doctors do a full checkup. They found a malignant tumor in her lungs. I spent so much money, and still couldn’t save her life."
Kiana thought of the kind old woman who used to hold her hand, and felt a pang of sorrow.
Looking back, it was no wonder Evan had been so distracted and haggard—it must have been because of his grandma’s illness.
"Money’s a bastard. To save Grandma, I teamed up with Stella Lyncg. In the end, I couldn’t keep Grandma, and lost you as a friend too."
Evan’s voice was full of self-mockery and pain; his words caught in his throat, sounding like an apology and a protest against fate’s cruelty.
Kiana finally understood everything from his words.
She’d always wondered why Evan would hurt her when there was no bad blood between them. Now she realized why.
But what wrong did money do?
People use it for bargains and deals, then turn around and curse it. Ha... How ironic.
If she’d held onto any resentment before, hearing Evan’s words made her let go completely.
She put down the lunch box, looked at Evan, and quietly signed, "My condolences."
Then, picking up the lunch box, she got ready to leave. Evan anxiously grabbed her.
"Kiana, I only found out later that you and President Sinclair were married. I’ve heard a lot about you two—I’m really worried about you..."
Evan paused and gave another bitter smile. "I know you probably won’t believe me, after all, I hurt you. But I really hope you can be happy, and not get hurt anymore."
Kiana believed Evan truly cared for her, but what was done was done. If Miles Goodman hadn’t saved her that day—if Ethan Sinclair hadn’t found her—who knows what might’ve happened. So she couldn’t forgive Evan.
Kiana nodded lightly. "Thanks for caring. I know what I’m doing."
Evan slowly let go of her hand, but couldn’t help asking, "Kiana, can we... still be friends?"
Kiana shook her head. "Fate’s run its course. Take care of yourself."
Evan was disappointed, but this was just what he’d expected from her.
She seemed gentle and easygoing on the surface, but in reality, she was colder than anyone.
Or maybe...it was that anyone she didn’t care for, she could cast aside without a second thought.
He was the one who betrayed her first—he couldn’t blame her.
...
After Evan delayed her, it was half an hour later when Kiana finally got to Kate Lynch’s hospital room.
Besides Kate, there was a maid in the room.
That maid had seen Kiana at Angus Lynch’s birthday party. Seeing her now, she immediately stood and glared at Kiana in anger. "What are you doing here?"
Kiana glanced at Kate, lifting the lunch box she was carrying.
She figured since Ethan Sinclair asked her to deliver food, he must’ve already told Kate Lynch.
Kate was visibly surprised to see Kiana. Ethan had told her someone would be bringing her food today, but she never expected it would be Kiana...
