Chapter 56: Chapter 56: Does Your Husband Mind That You’re Mute?

Kiana Sutton had no idea when she got home; all she knew was that when she woke up, she was in her own bed.

She was wearing pajamas, her body covered in marks of purplish blue, with not a single unblemished spot on her neck and chest.

Fortunately, it was the weekend. She slept for two whole days before she finally recovered.

In those two days, Ethan Sinclair didn’t come back, sparing Kiana from some of the awkwardness.

She vaguely remembered that, in the car, she seemed to have confessed her feelings to Ethan. She had no idea what his expression was at the time, nor his emotional state.

All she knew was how ruthless Ethan had been towards her—she’d cried so hard, and still, he hadn’t let her go, only getting rougher.

On Monday morning, it was only when Kiana got to the company that she found out Evan Shepherd had resigned.

After an entire weekend to process, Kiana realized that she hadn’t just gotten drunk that night, but had been given spiked alcohol.

Piecing together the things Evan Shepherd had said, Kiana finally understood—the person who had set her up was the very Evan Shepherd she’d always considered a good friend.

Being betrayed by your best friend is one of the most painful things. Kiana couldn’t help the bitterness in her heart.

When Amy Manning saw Kiana, she ran over holding a letter. "Kiana, do you know why Judith resigned?"

Kiana pressed her lips together, shaking her head gently.

She truly didn’t know if Evan Shepherd left of his own accord, or if Ethan Sinclair had kicked him out of the company.

"This is for you—Judith asked me to pass it along. I don’t know what’s wrong with him. I asked, but he wouldn’t say anything. And... On Friday night, after you went to the bathroom, you just never came back. Both of us were worried sick. Where did you go?"

The more Amy talked about it, the more aggrieved she got. "I texted you and you didn’t reply, called you and you wouldn’t answer..."

Kiana hurriedly gestured, "I did reply to your message!"

"Oh... Just a single, ’I’m fine,’ that’s it?"

Amy was so innocent; Kiana didn’t want her to know about all the ugly things, so she explained patiently, "I ran into an acquaintance in the bathroom. She sent me home."

Hearing that Kiana was all right, Amy finally let out a sigh of relief. Right after, she gave Kiana a few playful smacks. "You take off and don’t even say anything, left both me and Judith worried to death."

Just then, a few female coworkers came over.

"I think Evan Shepherd couldn’t take being crazily pursued by a certain someone, so he had no choice but to resign from Evercrest Group, right?"

"Exactly! He worked so hard at Evercrest Group for years, finally got his footing. Who would just up and quit like that?"

Kiana originally had no intention of responding to her coworkers’ malicious gossip, nor did she plan to explain her situation with Evan Shepherd to people who weren’t involved.

Suddenly, she spotted Ethan Sinclair.

Her heart gave a violent jolt. Without thinking, she grabbed Amy’s arm. "Amy, can you help me out?"

Amy was indignant at the way the others were slandering Kiana. Hearing Kiana, she said generously, "Of course! Just say the word!"

She shot a vicious glare at those coworkers, looking like she’d be ready to fight whoever Kiana pointed at.

"I’ll sign, you translate for me," Kiana gestured.

"So you’re finally fighting back?"

Kiana: "..."

If anything, it wasn’t about fighting back—it was all for Ethan Sinclair to see.

"Evan Shepherd and I are just friends. I don’t like him and I’ve never chased him, and... I’m already married..."

Amy watched Kiana’s signing and translated as she went along.

When she saw the word ’married,’ Amy thought she must have translated wrong. She blurted out, "Kiana, you’re married?"

Kiana glanced in Ethan Sinclair’s direction and could only see his back, not his face.

She nodded solemnly and seriously.

Now, it wasn’t just Amy—everyone else was stunned.

No one had expected it; Kiana was so young, and yet she was already married.

"What the hell... You hid it so well? Who’s your husband? Is he handsome? Is he good to you? Does he mind that you can’t talk?"

Amy fired off a whole list of questions.

Before Kiana could answer, Amy kept going, "Well, if he minded, he wouldn’t have married you. He must love you a lot."

Kiana pressed her lips together, her heart aching—if only Ethan could love her.

"Yeah... He’s really handsome, has a great body, pretty much perfect in every way."

As Ethan Sinclair walked away, Kiana felt like a punctured balloon, all her energy leaking out at once.

"Hey, did you guys see what just flew across the sky?"

"A plane?"

"No, a cow! Someone just bragged so hard, they sent a cow flying into the sky!"

"Hahaha..."

The group burst into mocking laughter.

"Kiana Sutton, what kind of stunning guy with a great body would go for a mute like you? What’s he after? Because you’re a mute?"

Kiana shot a cold glare at the speaker. Just then, their manager came out, and nobody dared say another word—they all slunk back to their desks.

Only then did Kiana open the letter Evan Shepherd had left her.

"Kiana, I’m sorry... Everything is my fault. I don’t expect you to forgive me, I just hope you’ll stay safe. Be careful of Stella Lyncg."

Evan hadn’t said much, but Kiana thought about it and realized—the one who manipulated Evan was Stella Lyncg.

She still didn’t know exactly what offer or leverage Stella used to make Evan go along with the plan against her, but what she did know was that her friendship with Evan Shepherd had come to an end.

Soon after, Kiana’s phone vibrated twice. She looked down and saw a WeChat message from Ethan Sinclair.

"Come to my office." 𝓯𝙧𝙚𝒆𝙬𝙚𝒃𝙣𝙤𝒗𝓮𝓵.𝙘𝙤𝙢

Hardly thinking, Kiana got up and left the planning department.

She was still a little apprehensive. Ethan had said they’d get divorced sooner or later, that their relationship should never be allowed to get out.

But all she’d said was that she was married—it wasn’t like she’d said to whom! That shouldn’t be a breach of their agreement, right?

As soon as she reached the corner, Kiana ran smack into Stella Lyncg, who’d just arrived for work.

The two came face-to-face in the hallway; Kiana’s delicate face instantly went cold.

Stella’s expression soured the moment she saw Kiana. Without a word, she dragged Kiana around the corner.

Kiana immediately tried to push Stella off, but Stella was even faster—she yanked open Kiana’s collar in one go...

The marks Ethan Sinclair had left were instantly revealed to Stella, who was furious. "You shameless bitch!"

She threw her hand up to slap Kiana, but Kiana caught it, and slapped her right back across the face.

Stella couldn’t believe Kiana actually fought back—she cradled her cheek, glaring at Kiana, grinding her teeth. "How dare you hit me!"

Stella didn’t understand sign language, and Kiana had no intention of explaining. She turned to leave.

Stella, stinging from that slap, wasn’t about to let Kiana go. Just as she reached to grab Kiana’s collar, Kiana shoved her phone in Stella’s face.

"If you’re not afraid of people finding out about me and Ethan Sinclair, go ahead and scream."
