Chapter 345: Serial killer

"It’s a good thing that I managed to cover it up in the end." I said to myself while reading that newspaper in my hand.

The headline was...

"A massive natural explosion happened in the forest."

Of course, it wasn’t a natural explosion that happened.

That was the cover up that I forced the news outlets to print with the power of the Land Surveying Department.

Though to say that it was forced would be considered an abuse of power.

So really it was just a matter of convincing them.

The Land Surveying Department was the unofficial department that handled intelligence and it was only natural that they would have connections with the local papers.

With the position that I had created for myself, doing something like this was still within my capabilities.

Though if it wasn’t for the fact that the higher ups had been focused on dealing with the more pressing issues like the demons, it wouldn’t have been that easy.

"That idiot better appreciate this and not cause any more trouble for me." I muttered to myself after putting the newspaper down.

Instead, I picked up something else that had been dropped on my desk.

This was something that was even more of a headache to deal with, but I really couldn’t do anything since this was the case that was assigned to me. It wasn’t something that was important enough that those with real power in the Land Surveying Department would have to get involved.

After all, it was a rather small local case.

Though for the people that were involved such as the citizens that lived in this city, it couldn’t be considered a small case.

"A serial killer, huh?" I muttered to myself as I read through the case.

The reason that it was hard to deal with and the reason that it had come all the way to me was because of the particular method that this serial killer used.

Though they tried their best to catch this serial killer, they had never been able to do so.

Whenever they tried, it was always as if this serial killer disappeared into thin air.

The more that I read about this case, the more familiar it seemed until...

"Ah, I remember this event." I suddenly said out loud before looking around to make sure that no one heard me. I was alone in my office, but there was no telling if anyone would suddenly come in.

After making sure, I started going through my memories.

They were the memories of this world when it was still a game.

That was because this serial killer was something that had appeared in the game as well.

It was supposed to be something that came much later, but it seemed like there was something that had pushed this event up.

While I had no idea what it was that had pushed this event up, it didn’t matter since it meant that I could take care of this on my own.

The memories of the game included his abilities, which meant that I knew how he managed to sneak away whenever he came close to being caught. It was a special skill that he had been born with, which was why no one knew how he did it.

But since I had the memories of the game, I was able to easily figure that out.

Along with the method to take care of him.

"For this, it seems like I’ll have to get some help. But other than that, it might be a good thing to get someone that can make this skill ours. It might even be strengthened if we use this ability with Nox’s power."

The more that I planned, the more excited I became.

After all, this certainly wasn’t a normal event.

"Then let’s see if we can set a trap for his next attack."

Looking at the calendar, I started making the plans.

...

"Are you sure that he’ll be here?" Aragon asked me in an impatient voice.

I knew why he was impatient, it was all because I had dragged him out in the middle of the night when he had something to do tomorrow morning. With how long this could take, it meant that he wouldn’t be able to sleep tonight.

Though it wouldn’t be a problem for us to miss sleep for a day or even a few days, it wasn’t as if it was a pleasant feeling.

Still, I said, "It’s better if you’re here as well just in case anything goes wrong."

He narrowed his eyes to look at me, but eventually he said with a sigh, "Alright, I just hope that he’ll be here soon."

Since he was connected, it was only natural that he knew that this really was the next target of the serial killer.

This serial killer had a particular habit and it was related to the victims that he chose, which was why we had been following his next potential victim for an hour now. It was just that even though we had been following for so long, the serial killer hadn’t arrived yet.

This conjecture had been based on the information from the game, but now that I thought about it...this might not be accurate.

The timing of the serial killer showing up was different from how it was in the game.

If that was different, then there was the chance that his target preference might have changed as well.

Though it didn’t seem to be the case based on what I had read in the report, it was still a possibility.

But while we were doubting ourselves, there was a sound that came from in front of us.

As soon as we heard this, we knew that there was no need to worry anymore.

Though he snuck through the night, we were able to find him easily and follow him as he approached the target.

Seeing this, Aragon said with a sigh, "Alright, it’s time to get to work."

But I raised my hand and said, "Not yet, let him become complacent first."

Aragon looked at me with a look that showed he disagreed, but he didn’t do anything in the end.
