Chapter 162: More Than He Bargained For

Poor Donnie had to have a seat—his son was becoming a father for the first time.

Zack was in his office doing paperwork as usual when his phone started to ring. He didn’t recognize the number. What the heck, he would answer it just to see what was being sold to him this time.

"Hello, can I help you?" he responded.

"Zack’s is the one and only Zach Spinelli then I’m talking to? What the hell are you up to, old man?"

"Jake Traylor? Well I’ll be damned. What’s it been—three years since you talked to me last, you scoundrel? How the hell have you been?"

"Well Zack, it’s like this—I’ve been doing fabulous. I don’t know that I’ve ever been better in my life, you know. It gets lonely the way I live, but I always have some young pretty thing on my arm to keep me company."

"Yeah Jake, that’s true. I see you in some of the gossip magazines and tabloids—another sweet young thing is claiming she’s heavy with child of the great Jake Traylor, then all of a sudden she’s history because she’s lying through her eyeteeth. How in the hell do you get out of all them near misses and scrapes of those gals trying to have a kid by you?"

"Zack, it’s like this—I’ll let you know my secret. I have a damn good legal team on retainer and DNA that doesn’t match mine. And it never will because I’m not a damn fool."

"Jake, that’s true, but I wouldn’t trade my kids for anything. They mean more than anything in the world. Besides, being a grandfather and great-grandfather’s great."

"You blowing smoke up my ass, old man? A great grandfather already?"

"Yep, two times over, and those boys are wonderful. In fact, my whole family is wonderful. Why don’t you come out for a visit for a few days?"

"Well, you old fart, if you look up, I’m already here. I got some business here with one of your partners."

Zack couldn’t believe his eyes—somebody he had known since he was nine years old, now standing directly in front of him, his best bud Jake Traylor.

It had been several years, and seeing Jake brought back memories. Not all were so pleasant, but hey, that’s life.

"Zack, you have changed very little. I don’t know what keeps you young out here amongst all these Genmen and other ones."

"Jake, it’s called good clean living. I have a wonderful life here, someplace that I call home that I love, with people that love me. You know the jet set life like you’ve got doesn’t appeal to me. Give me construction crew, quiet time with the kids, and I’m set. I don’t need the glitz and glamour."

"I hear you, Zack. Comes a time in a man’s life when he has to reevaluate everything and decide what’s really worth it, and I’m almost at that point right now. I keep on questioning myself every day—is it worth it? Do I need to go on, or should I find somebody that makes me happy and settle down with them and who knows, maybe raise a couple kids?"

"Hold the presses! Did I just hear Jake Traylor mention the K word, as in kids? ’I’m never having any, I don’t want any mongrels of my own, and keep yours at a distance because they bite.’"

"Hey, that was Luther. He was still young and not well disciplined at the time."

"No shit, Zack. I still have scars on my finger to prove it—the little shit bit the hell out of me."

"Tell me Jake, have you had breakfast yet? I know those transit carriers don’t serve it. I doubt they stopped at the little township hole in the wall down the road. How about some of the best practice you’ve ever sunk your teeth into? That’s where I’m headed right now. Donnie’s son Chas and his apprentice Constantine are serving breakfast at the construction warehouse to all the workers, and I eat there all the time. It saves Harry wear and tear in the morning as he’s tending to the twins, and I get to keep up with the crew and exactly what’s going on with the construction of the new center."

"Zack, I’m starving and I’m always up for adventure, but if you say they can cook good, I’m going to hold you to your word. But if they can’t, you owe me some flat cakes."

"Jake, be prepared to have your taste buds tantalized and your horizons broadened, because Donnie is going to open up a new exclusive restaurant at the center, and what you’re sampling is just a mere portion of what those three are capable of together or even apart."

Jake and Zack made a beeline for the runner and took it directly to the construction warehouse. Jake’s nose was in the air before he even got out of the buggy.

"Damn Zack, if it’s half as good as it smells, I might not ever leave here."

"Just wait till it touches your tongue and it’s all over. You’ll be in love with the food and you will stay here, my oldest friend."

As soon as Jake walked in the door, it was like old home week. Genmen that hadn’t seen him in years started coming up, patting him on his back and shaking his hand and hugging his neck, especially Ben, who hugged him so hard he almost lost his breath.

"Mr. Jake, why didn’t you let us know you were coming? We could plan something special."

"Who needs anything special when you got a spread like this? When did you guys start this?"

"It’s been a little while, sir. Donnie needed the audience to test his recipes and we’re all his guinea pigs, and I’ll let you know right now we are loving it. Between him, Chas, and young Constantine over there, we have never eaten so good before."

Jake looked over and saw Constantine, and his heart skipped a beat. He had never seen a young human male this sexy in all his life. He was nice height, good structure, built with porcelain white skin with light freckles on his nose and that most beautiful bright red hair—not shocking red but a dark deep red—and blue eyes that made you want to get lost in them.

Jake elbowed Zack. "Since when are you taking in humans here?" He motioned towards Constantine.

"Well, you know me Jake—I’m a sucker for the lost, the forgotten, and the ones that are just generally down on their luck. They need a hand up, not a handout, so I decided to broaden my horizons a little bit. Young Constantine there was left with his three younger siblings—he’s the oldest and the youngest was only three hours old when he took over as the parent. I couldn’t leave them outside in the rain storm, thunder and heat. That would’ve been uncivilized of me, so I had a house put them in a small cottage next to Donnie and his roommate Stephen. It’s just worked out so well—he’s learned a lot and he’s a good guy, smart and loyal to his family."

"And being so damn sexy didn’t have anything to do with it?"

"Not with me. I’ve got Harry, and my Harry’s all the sexy I need. But you be careful around him and don’t you break his heart, or I’ll break my foot off in your backside. He’s got three brothers to think of—one is still an infant—so do not play with him or you will answer to me. We’ve known each other a long time and I do know you, Mr. Playboy, and how you are."

"Zack, like I told you, I’m ready to settle. Sure, I have played both sides of that fence, but now I’m ready to get serious. Let me tell you, that young man is something to get serious about."

"You just be careful, Jake. I’m not losing a friendship over you wanting a piece of tail, and with that boy you may bite off more than you can chew, as he comes with baggage. Those brothers will not leave his side—that’s what you have to understand."

"Zack, I understand definitely. I understand you’re protective of all of your charges here, human and Genmen, but damn, he’s too cute."

Zack thought to himself: I’ll keep this little secret to myself. Let old Jake think he’s got a good-looking young human. Wait till he finds out he’s part human and part Genmen, but he’s still totally cute.
