Chapter 40: Chapter 40

The ninety-minute break between matches felt simultaneously too long and too short. William’s team used the time to rest and analyze what had gone wrong against Luminara while watching other matches for information on Arcturus’s tactics.

Seraphina’s team fought with relentless aggression, overwhelming Valoris in under five minutes through pure combat pressure. Their teamwork was less refined than Ascendant’s or Luminara’s, but they compensated by having every member trained to an exceptionally high individual combat standard.

"They’re going to try to overrun us immediately," Adrian observed while watching. "Seraphina leads from the front and expects her team to match her intensity. We need to weather the initial assault and then counter once they’ve committed their essence reserves."

"Easier said than done," Devon muttered. "Did you see how fast they move?"

"We don’t need to match their speed," Adrian said. "We need to control the engagement and force them to fight on our terms."

The strategy made sense in theory, but William suspected the reality would be considerably more difficult. Seraphina was a monster in combat, and her team had clearly been training together for longer than Ascendant’s hastily assembled group.

"House Ascendant versus House Arcturus. Both team head to the platform."

William climbed up with his teammates and took position across from Arcturus. Seraphina stood at the center of their formation with silver hair tied back and crimson eyes focused with predatory intensity. She didn’t acknowledge William’s presence, keeping her attention on Adrian as the opposing team captain.

The referee checked both teams. "Begin!"

Arcturus surged forward as a unified wave of aggression. Seraphina led the charge directly at Adrian while her teammates split to pressure the flanks. The speed was overwhelming—within seconds William found himself defending against two opponents simultaneously.

Fire enhancement barely kept pace with the coordinated assault. William blocked, deflected, and gave ground while trying to maintain formation. Adrian was fully occupied with Seraphina, their clash of lightning versus sword creating bursts of essence that forced nearby fighters to adjust positions.

"Hold formation!" Adrian called out, but Arcturus’s pressure was relentless.

Devon attempted his terrain manipulation but Arcturus had prepared for it. Their members used enhancement to simply power through the uneven ground rather than trying to adapt their footing. Mira’s shadows were less effective because Arcturus fought with such aggressive forward momentum that subtle misdirection didn’t slow them down.

Three minutes in and Ascendant was entirely defensive. Patricia’s water techniques provided a crucial support that kept anyone from being eliminated, but they couldn’t mount any counterattack against the sustained assault.

William saw Seraphina break through Adrian’s defense and score a decisive hit. The house captain went down, officially eliminated from the match.

Four versus five now, and Arcturus pressed their advantage mercilessly.

"Regroup to the center!" Patricia called, taking command with Adrian down.

They tried to consolidate around Patricia’s defensive position but Arcturus split their formation and attacked from multiple angles. William blocked a strike aimed at Patricia and countered with fire-enhanced strikes that forced his opponent back temporarily.

But it wasn’t enough. Devon fell next, caught between two Arcturus members who coordinated their strikes perfectly. Then Mira went down trying to create space for Patricia and William to retreat.

"Match to Arcturus!"

William and Patricia descended from the platform looking thoroughly beaten. The match had lasted six minutes and they had never had a chance to implement their strategy. Arcturus’s overwhelming combat skill had simply crushed them through direct pressure.

Adrian looked frustrated despite the expected loss. "We knew that would be difficult. Arcturus is individually the strongest house, and Seraphina’s leadership turns that strength into coordinated dominance."

"At least we didn’t get eliminated in three minutes," William offered.

"Small victories," Adrian said dryly.

The team battle portion of the competition continued through the afternoon with the remaining house matchups. Luminara defeated Arcturus in a close match that came down to Liam outmaneuvering Seraphina in the final exchange. Valoris managed to defeat no one, confirming their position as the weakest house team.

The final standings for day one were posted as the sun began setting:

Team Battle Rankings:

1. Luminara (3 wins)

2. Arcturus (2 wins)

3. Ascendant (1 win)

4. Valoris (0 wins)

Individual performance scores were also calculated based on combat effectiveness, tactical contributions, and overall impact during matches. William’s scores were solid but not exceptional—he had performed well in the Valoris match but struggled against the stronger opponents.

"Tomorrow is the undividual brackets," Adrian reminded the team as they prepared to leave. "We’re no longer working together. Everyone competes for themselves to improve their personal ranking. Top two from each house are guaranteed spots on the Inter-Academy team, but the remaining two slots go to whoever ranks highest regardless of house."

"So we could potentially have three from Ascendant if someone performs exceptionally well," Mira observed.

"In theory, yes. In practice, Luminara and Arcturus will probably dominate the individual brackets." Adrian looked at each of them. "But that doesn’t mean we can’t surprise people. Rest tonight and be ready for tomorrow morning."

William headed back to his dormitory feeling exhausted from three consecutive team battles. His essence pathways were strained from sustained combat usage, and his muscles ached from the constant defensive fighting against Arcturus.

The room was empty with Kai still at his library retreat. William collapsed onto his bed and pulled up the system interface to check the damage.

Day Two Preview: Individual brackets will require direct one-on-one combat with potential targets. Probability of activation incident: HIGH

---

William stared at Claire’s percentage and felt genuine concern. Forty-nine percent and still climbing, with two more days of high-stress competition remaining. The system’s warning about a "secondary threshold" at fifty percent was new information, and William had no idea what that meant beyond probably being worse than the forty-five percent activation level.

He dismissed the interface and tried to sleep despite knowing tomorrow would bring individual matches where he couldn’t avoid direct confrontation with curse targets. The brackets were random, which meant he could end up fighting Seraphina, Claire, or Lyanna at any point.

Or all three, if his luck was particularly terrible.

Wednesday morning arrived too quickly. William dragged himself out of bed and went through his preparation routine mechanically. Individual combat brackets meant he’d be fighting alone without team support, relying entirely on his own skills against opponents who ranged from competent to genuinely dangerous.

The bracket draw happened at the arena with all twenty competitors present. Names were selected randomly and placed into a standard elimination tree—ten first-round matches, five second-round, and so on until a winner emerged.

William found his name paired against a Valoris student named Marcus Chen for the first round. Not Sara, which was a small relief. Looking further up the bracket tree, he saw potential second-round matchups that included either Lyanna or a Luminara fourth-year depending on who won their respective first-round fights.

Seraphina was in a different bracket section entirely, which meant they wouldn’t meet unless both made it to the semifinals. Claire was also in another section, though William noticed her first-round opponent was a second-year from Valoris who probably wouldn’t provide much resistance.

"First round begins in thirty minutes," the announcement came. "Matches will run simultaneously on four platforms. Check your assigned platform number on the bracket display."

William was assigned to platform two. He made his way there and watched the other platforms while waiting for his turn. Liam fought on platform one and dominated his opponent in under three minutes, showing exactly why he was considered the top student. Seraphina fought on platform three with her usual overwhelming aggression, defeating her opponent almost as quickly.

"Marcus Chen versus William Cross, platform two."

William climbed up and faced Marcus, a third-year student with wind affinity who fought with speed and evasion tactics. The match was pretty straightforward—Marcus was skilled but not exceptional, and William had trained against faster opponents during his sessions with Liam.

Fire enhancement gave William the offensive edge while Marcus tried to create distance and use mobility to avoid direct engagement. William adapted by creating heat zones that limited Marcus’s movement options, eventually forcing him into close combat where speed alone wasn’t enough to overcome William’s superior essence capacity.

The match ended in seven minutes with William advancing to the second round. He descended from the platform feeling satisfied with his performance but aware that future opponents would be significantly more challenging.

The first round continued through the morning with various matchups producing expected and unexpected results. Lyanna defeated her opponent with precise magical techniques. Claire won her match, though William noticed she’d fought with unusual intensity that bordered on excessive force. Mira advanced as well, along with Adrian and Patricia from Ascendant.

Second-round brackets were posted during the lunch break. William checked his assignment and felt his stomach drop.

Lyanna Stormweaver.

Of course.

They were scheduled for early afternoon on platform two, which gave William maybe an hour to prepare for fighting someone who knew his combat style extensively from their training sessions together.

He grabbed lunch and found a quiet spot to eat while mentally reviewing what he knew about Lyanna’s fighting approach. She preferred range combat using magical constructs and essence manipulation, rarely engaging in direct close-quarters exchanges. Her tactical awareness was excellent, and she adapted quickly to opponent strategies.

William’s best chance was to pressure her immediately with fire enhancement and force close combat before she could establish her preferred distance advantage. It was a straightforward plan that would probably fail if Lyanna had prepared counters to his tactics.

"William."

He looked up and found Lyanna standing there with her own lunch.

"Mind if I sit?" she asked.

"Go ahead."

They ate in silence for a few minutes, the upcoming match hanging between them like an unspoken topic neither wanted to address directly.

"I’ve been thinking about our match," Lyanna finally said. "We’ve trained together enough that we both know each other’s combat patterns. This is going to come down to who adapts better in the moment."

"Probably," William agreed.

"I wanted to say, regardless of who wins, I appreciate the training sessions we’ve had. You helped me understand practical combat applications in ways classroom theory can never cover." Lyanna’s violet eyes met his with genuine warmth. "So thank you for that."

"Same. Your theory foundation helped me understand why techniques work instead of just executing them blindly."

They finished lunch and parted ways to prepare for the match. William made his way to platform two and found Lyanna already there, stretching and running through mental preparation routines.

The referee checked that both were ready. "Begin!"

Lyanna immediately created distance, using wind essence to propel herself backward while constructing magical barriers between them. William pursued with fire enhancement, launching strikes that tested her defensive constructs.

The barriers held but showed strain under repeated fire attacks. Lyanna adapted by layering multiple elements in her defenses, creating complexity that made simple overwhelming force less effective.

William shifted tactics, using what Liam had taught him about sustainable pressure rather than burst attacks. He maintained consistent fire enhancement and methodically dismantled Lyanna’s barriers one layer at a time.

Three minutes in and Lyanna was forced to commit more essence to maintaining defenses than she could sustain long-term. She tried to counter with offensive magical constructs but William’s combat experience let him deflect them while maintaining forward pressure.

"You’ve improved," Lyanna called out while reconstructing a barrier William had just broken through.

"So have you," William replied.

The match continued with William slowly gaining ground despite Lyanna’s excellent tactical adjustments. Her essence reserves were smaller than his, and the sustained defensive effort was draining her faster than his offensive pressure cost him.

Five minutes in, William broke through her final defensive layer and closed to melee range. Lyanna attempted close combat but her training had focused on magical manipulation rather than direct sword work. William’s strike connected cleanly, a decisive blow that ended the match.

"Match to Cross!"

They both lowered their weapons, breathing hard from the extended engagement.

"Good fight," Lyanna said with a slight smile despite the loss. "I knew the close combat weakness would cost me eventually."

"Your defenses were solid. Another year of training and I wouldn’t have broken through."

They left the platform and William felt the system interface flicker with updates he didn’t want to check right now. The match had required extended focus on Lyanna, which probably meant her percentage had jumped from the combat intensity modifier the system had warned about.

The second round continued through the afternoon. Liam advanced easily, as did Seraphina. Claire won her match against a third-year from Arcturus, and William noticed the wild edge in her eyes had intensified from yesterday.

Adrian lost to Liam in a close match that came down to the protagonist’s superior combat instincts. Mira fell to an Arcturus fourth-year who countered her shadow techniques with overwhelming lightning enhancement.

By evening, eight students remained for the quarterfinals scheduled for tomorrow morning. The bracket showed William potentially facing Claire in the semifinals if they both won their quarterfinal matches.

That was going to be a problem.
