Chapter 100: Suck My Dick Derek

Derek attacked immediately, his boots digging into the dirt as he launched forward. His practice sword came in a horizontal slash aimed at Kai’s ribs, then immediately transitioned into an upward cut toward the shoulder. The blade whistled through the air, fire essence crackling along its edge like embers dancing in wind.

Kai’s sword moved to intercept, meeting the first strike with a sharp clang that sent vibrations up both their arms. He angled his blade to deflect the upward cut, the practice weapons scraping against each other with a metallic screech before separating.

Derek didn’t pause. He planted his left foot and spun, his blade coming around in a wide arc enhanced by the rotational momentum. At the same time, earth essence flowed down through his legs into the ground, creating small ridges beneath his feet that gave him additional stability and power.

Kai stepped back smoothly, his sword rising to block the spinning strike. The impact was solid pushing him back a bit.

Derek’s technique was genuinely good, three years of academy training was evident in the clean execution and proper weight distribution.

But Kai’s essence sense had already read the attack pattern seconds before Derek’s muscles fully committed. He knew exactly where the blade would be and exactly how much force would be behind it.

Derek’s eyes narrowed when his combination failed to break through. He immediately shifted tactics, channeling more fire essence into his weapon. The flames around his practice sword intensified, growing from flickering orange to bright yellow, heat radiating outward in visible waves that made the air shimmer.

He launched into a rapid series of strike with each one building on the last in a coordinated sequence. His blade came down in an overhead chop that Kai sidestepped, dirt scattering where the sword struck the ground. Derek immediately pivoted, dragging his blade up from the earth in an upward slash that left a trail of small flames in its wake.

Kai’s sword intercepted it with minimal movement, deflecting the strike to the side. Derek spun again, using the deflection’s momentum to fuel a backhand swing at Kai’s midsection.

The exchange accelerated. Derek moved with genuine skill, his footwork precise as he advanced and retreated, creating angles for his attacks. Against most second-year students, this level of aggression and technique would be overwhelming.

Against Kai, every movement was telegraphed.

Kai defended calmly, his blade moving in small, efficient arcs to intercept each strike. His essence sense tracked Derek’s essence flow and the way fire essence gathered in Derek’s arms before heavy strikes, how earth essence concentrated in his legs when he needed stability. Every attack announced itself seconds before execution.

After about a minute of sustained assault, Derek leaped back, his chest heaving. Sweat dripped down his face and his flames flickered unevenly from the exertion. "Stop defending and actually fight."

"This is fighting."

"No, this is you blocking everything I throw at you without even trying to attack." Derek’s frustration was evident in how his fire essence flared wildly around his sword. "Either take this seriously or admit you’re not as good as everyone claims."

Kai considered that, then shifted his stance slightly. His practice sword moved forward in a quick thrust aimed at Derek’s center mass.

Derek brought his blade down to deflect, but Kai’s sword was already changing angles, flowing around the block like water. The wooden blade came in from the left instead, forcing Derek to twist his body defensively.

Kai pressed forward with a series of rapid strikes that reversed their positions. His sword moved in precise patterns with each movement was being sharp, containing no wasted motion or excessive force.

Derek blocked desperately, his feet moving backward as he struggled to keep up with the sudden shift in dynamic. His fire essence flickered as he divided attention between defense and maintaining enhancement.

Kai’s blade slipped past Derek’s guard in a smooth upward motion, the tip tapping Derek’s left shoulder with controlled force. "First point."

Derek’s face flushed red. He reset his stance, his practice sword now wreathed in flames that burned bright enough to cast dancing shadows across the watching crowd. The fire essence concentrated around the blade until it looked like he was holding a brand pulled fresh from a forge.

He attacked with renewed aggression, abandoning some defensive caution for pure offensive pressure. His blade came down in a heavy overhead chop that cracked the ground when Kai sidestepped. Derek immediately transitioned into a horizontal slash, the flames leaving a burning trail in the air.

Kai ducked under it, feeling the heat wash over his head. He came up with his sword angled to deflect Derek’s follow-up thrust, the impact sending sparks scattering across the dirt like tiny fireflies.

Derek spun into a low sweep, trying to catch Kai’s legs. Kai jumped, his boots clearing the blade by inches. While airborne, he angled his practice sword downward and tapped Derek’s ribs as he landed.

"Second point."

"Damn it!" Derek’s control was slipping, visible in how his flames now flickered wildly instead of burning steady. His next attack came with less technique and more raw power—a brutal overhead strike with both hands gripping his sword, fire essence blazing so bright that several watching students had to shield their eyes.

The blade came down like a falling meteor, trailing flames and superheated air.

Kai sidestepped with minimal movement, his body flowing to the right as Derek’s burning sword slammed into the earth where he’d been standing. The impact created a small explosion of dirt and embers, leaving a scorched crater in the ground.

Derek’s momentum carried him forward off-balance. Kai’s practice sword came up in a gentle arc and tapped the back of Derek’s shoulder while he was still recovering.

"Third point. Match over."

Derek stumbled, caught himself with his free hand against the ground, and slowly pushed himself upright. He turned to face Kai, his fire essence guttering like a dying candle. For a moment his grip tightened on his practice sword, muscles tensing as if he might attack despite the match being finished.

The flames around his weapon flared once, bright and hot, the dirt beneath his feet beginning to glow orange from the heat.

Then Lin’s quiet voice cut through the tension. "Derek. It’s over."

The fire essence died completely, smoke rising from Derek’s practice sword in thin wisps. He stood there breathing hard, sweat dripping from his chin, his shoulders heaving with each labored breath. His jaw clenched like he wanted to say something but couldn’t find words.

Finally, he just nodded stiffly and walked away toward the tents, his boots leaving small scorch marks in the grass with each step.

The watching students erupted in murmurs. Some leaned toward their neighbors, whispering excitedly. Others stared at Kai with new assessment in their eyes. Seraphina just shook her head with an expression that clearly said "I told you to be nice."

Master Henrik appeared at Kai’s elbow, having observed the entire match from the edge of the crowd. "Well handled. You could have humiliated him but chose not to. That shows good judgment."

"He needed to know where he stood without being destroyed."

"Exactly. Derek’s pride is wounded, but his confidence isn’t shattered. He’ll recover." Henrik glanced toward where Derek had disappeared between the tents. "Though you’ve made an enemy. Be prepared for that to disrupt teamwork."

Kai shrugged, returning his practice sword to the equipment rack. "He was already hostile. This just confirmed why."

"Fair point." Henrik returned to supervising camp setup while students dispersed, still talking animatedly about what they’d witnessed.

Lin approached Kai hesitantly, her footsteps soft on the trampled grass. "That was... you made it look easy."

"Derek’s good. He’s just predictable."

"Maybe." Lin fidgeted with her sleeve, her eyes not quite meeting his. "Thank you for not embarrassing him worse than necessary. He would have spiraled if you’d crushed him completely."

"Roland said the same thing."

"Roland’s perceptive about people..." Lin glanced back toward the tents where Derek had gone. "I should probably check on Derek. He gets moody after losses."

She left, and Kai found himself relatively alone for the first time since they’d stopped for camp. He retrieved his pack and did equipment maintenance, checking weapons and supplies methodically.

Seraphina appeared while he was organizing his gear, dropping down to sit cross-legged beside him. "So. You beat Derek in such a short time without breaking a sweat. How does it feel to be the team’s mysterious powerhouse?"

"I preferred being anonymous."

"Too late for that now. Everyone just watched you handle a third-year combat specialist like he was a beginner." She picked up one of his throwing knives, examining it idly. "You know what’s interesting though?"

"What?"

"You still weren’t trying hard. I could tell. Derek gave it everything he had and you looked bored." Seraphina’s crimson eyes were calculating as she set the knife down. "Makes me wonder what you’re actually capable of when you do try."

"Maybe you’ll find out in the dungeon."

"I’m looking forward to it." She stood and stretched, her joints popping softly. "Get some sleep."

Kai returned to his assigned tent and found Derek already there, lying on his bedroll with his back to the entrance. Roland and Thomas were also present, the atmosphere distinctly awkward.

"Just so we’re clear," Derek said without turning around, his voice muffled against his arm. "I still don’t like you. But you can fight. I’ll give you that."

"Suck My Dick."

"We good then?" Roland asked hopefully from his corner.

"We’re fine," Derek muttered. "Just... leave me alone."
