Chapter 106: A Promise and a Cure

How pitiful, he thought to himself.

"The swift actions of Master Theo prevented any injuries among the household," the doctor answered, noticing Damien’s hesitation as he checked Leonide’s heart rate with a stethoscope. "There was some property damage, but it’s nothing serious."

So, there were no injuries. Relieved, Damien let out a breath he hadn’t realized he’d been holding. Since he felt partly responsible for the incident, he was deeply grateful no one had gotten hurt.

"What about Master Theo and the others?"

"Sebas is fine—still as strong and active as ever... Theo, though..."

Damien hesitated, unsure how much to reveal about Theo’s condition. While he trusted Leonide wouldn’t spread sensitive information, he was reluctant to share too much about Theo, who, as the heir to a marquisate, was in a vulnerable state.

He glanced at the doctor, who only tilted his head slightly, as if to indicate he couldn’t decide either. Leonide, observant as ever, seemed to pick up on the gravity of the situation from their reactions.

"Please, tell me. I think... I think it might be something I need to decide myself."

Something Leonide needed to decide? Damien was taken aback. What could he mean? 𝑓𝘳𝘦𝑒𝑤𝑒𝘣𝘯ℴ𝘷𝘦𝓁.𝑐𝑜𝑚

Leonide’s expression was resolute, his gaze unwavering as he said something that didn’t quite make sense to Damien. He didn’t seem disoriented, but the look in his eyes was intense and full of purpose.

"Please. If it’s mana depletion, I may be able to help him."

"Really?!"

Damien’s response was immediate, hope flaring up within him. But his eagerness had given away Theo’s situation entirely.

"Y-Yes... I think—no, I’m nearly certain I can do something to help. Master Theo is suffering from severe mana depletion, isn’t he?"

Leonide’s certainty left Damien with no choice but to nod, even though he hesitated for a split second. Seeing this confirmation, Leonide let out a deep, prolonged sigh and then fell silent, lost in thought.

"...Leonide? Um... about helping Theo... could you really...?"

"Yes..."

"Before that, I want to ask you one thing..." Leonide said, dodging a direct answer.

Damien couldn’t understand why Leonide was hesitating in such a dire situation, and it made him a bit frustrated.

"If Master Theo disappeared... you’d die, wouldn’t you?" Leonide’s question cut through Damien’s irritation, leaving him stunned.

What was Leonide talking about?

"Yes." He didn’t even need to think about it.

To Damien, who had no ties in this world, Theo was his only connection. Every bond Damien had formed—from Sebas to Leonide and everyone else—had come through Theo. If Theo didn’t wake up, he supposedly had arrangements with Sebas to look after Damien. But would Damien even trust that in Theo’s absence?

Why not?

Damien knew Sebas as Theo’s steward, but outside of that, he didn’t really know him at all. Trust was out of the question.

To be honest, Damien didn’t trust this world in any way beyond Theo. There was no family here, no friends, no familiar faces. The language, even the fundamental common sense, was different. Sometimes, he wasn’t even sure they felt emotions in the same way. Magic? What was that? Where did the laws of physics go?

So trusting this world was nearly impossible. In his heart, even his trust in Theo wasn’t absolute.

Yet, the one thing that felt real to him was the comfort he found when he was with Theo. He didn’t know if they truly shared the same feelings, but he did believe in the warmth he felt when he was with Theo.

Only this person would never let go of him. That connection was his only thread to this world.

Without it...

Well, Damien wouldn’t take his own life, but it would only be a matter of time.

"Right," Leonide replied with a soft smile, but Damien couldn’t be sure if he truly understood what he was trying to say. For all he knew, even Leonide’s small, bitter smile might mean something different than he expected.

"If I’d known it would come to this," Leonide murmured, "I wouldn’t have tried to make you think it was all a dream... just because I was embarrassed..."

With a slight movement, Leonide leaned in close—and kissed him.

Damien was taken aback, lost in confusion.

"Would it be enough if I promised to stay with you forever, Master... no, with you, Damien?" Leonide’s words floated between them.

Damien felt a fondness for Leonide, no question. People could deeply love animals whose minds they couldn’t truly understand, so caring about Leonide wasn’t so strange. He was sweet, he was endearing, and it genuinely warmed Damien’s heart to hear that he wanted to stay by his side.

"Yes, I don’t think that would be enough," Damien said at last.

But trust him? That he couldn’t do. Not yet, at least.

"Of course," Leonide replied with a bitter, tearful smile, his words enigmatic. "Guess I really messed this up... I shouldn’t have held back for his sake, just because he’s my master..."

Damien watched in silence, still unable to decipher Leonide’s expression, as Leonide brushed away his tears, he gave a gentle smile, and said, "Alright, let’s go and save Master Theo."

In that moment, Damien decided to believe in Leonide’s words.

Damien followed Leonide down the hallway, with Svetozar trailing behind them. It appeared that Leonide was leading them to Theo’s bedroom.

"Leonide, are you feeling alright?" Damien asked.

Although Leonide’s condition hadn’t been too severe, he’d still nearly drowned and had lost consciousness. Damien couldn’t help but worry if he was up for moving around so soon.

"Yeah, I’m fine," Leonide replied. "It’s all thanks to my master."

Even though Damien had done little but burden Leonide since he woke up, here Leonide was, about to help the person Damien cared for. He wasn’t sure what to say.

"Besides," Leonide continued, "I’m not going to be doing anything that tiring."

"Oh... So, you’re sure there’s no risk?" Damien asked, realizing he hadn’t actually asked how Leonide intended to help or if it would be safe for him.
