Chapter 117: Tears

Riven took a hesitant step back, planting his feet firmly on the grass of the moonlit garden. He closed his eyes, trying to summon the elusive connection to the wolf that was supposed to be inside him. Everyone said it was instinctual, as if just thinking about it was enough.

But no matter how still he stood, how deeply he breathed in the crisp mountain air, nothing happened.

He clenched his fists and bit his lip in frustration. His brows furrowed tightly as a small growl of annoyance rumbled in his throat. After a moment, his eyes opened, and he glared straight at Ronan, as if somehow this was all his fault.

Ronan, who had been watching quietly, immediately stepped forward and enveloped him in a firm hug. "Hey," he murmured into Riven’s hair, "don’t look at me like that." His voice was low and steady, calm like the earth beneath their feet. "This isn’t something you force. It’s like calling a part of yourself back home. You’re not broken, Riven."

Riven scowled, but he didn’t pull away. That only encouraged Ronan to keep holding him, and when his hand sneaked down to Riven’s tail and started scratching gently, Riven gasped and squirmed.

"Stop that! You know that’s!" He huffed, pushing at Ronan’s chest in an attempt to escape. But Ronan only chuckled. His tail was an extremely sensitive part, and toying with it would make him blush.

"I know. It works every time."

Tears welled up in Riven’s eyes, he was in a vulnerable position and touching his tail so much made him cry, he couldn’t help it. It was annoying, and it felt good at the same time.

"This isn’t fair," he muttered.

Then, in a burst of impulsive emotion, Riven pounced on Ronan, his intention clear: knock him over, make him stop teasing, anything to regain a shred of control. Ronan didn’t resist. In fact, he let himself fall backward with a soft "oomph," cradling Riven protectively even as they both landed on the soft grass.

Riven squeezed his eyes shut in anticipation of the fall, but when the thud came, something felt different. The air around him felt sharper, colder, and his body felt... Lighter? Smaller?

He slowly opened one eye and blinked. His paws were pressing against Ronan’s chest.

Paws.

His fluffy ears twitched. His tail — now even fluffier than before — was wagging furiously without his permission. "I... I did it?" his thoughts echoed. Though no words left his mouth, his bright eyes turned toward Ronan, wide with disbelief.

"Yes, you did." Ronan pressed a small kiss on Riven’s snout that made him look away.

Ronan was grinning. Not a smug smirk, but a warm, proud smile that reached his eyes. "You’re beautiful," he whispered, brushing his hand through Riven’s fur gently.

That was when Riven poofed again, not in a dramatic way, but in a blink-and-you-miss-it shimmer. He was back in his human form, sitting on top of Ronan, his legs straddling Ronan’s waist, his tail still twitching and his wolf ears perked up in embarrassment. His cheeks flushed deep red.

"Seriously?" He grumbled. "That didn’t even last a minute."

Ronan only laughed, lifting his hand to cup Riven’s cheek. "Why are you in such a rush? You made progress. That’s something to be proud of."

Still pouting, Riven let his head drop onto Ronan’s chest with a dramatic sigh. "I wanted to run through the woods," he mumbled, "like you guys do. I wanted to feel what it’s like."

"You will." Ronan’s hand had already drifted up, fingers brushing lightly over Riven’s ears. He felt Riven twitch in protest. "You’re stronger than you know. And now that your wolf’s responded once, it’ll only get easier."

"Mmm." Riven didn’t look convinced, but he didn’t move either. His face was still buried in the comforting rise and fall of Ronan’s breathing.

Ronan, knowing Riven was still sulking, decided to distract him in the only way he knew how by gently nibbling on one of those twitching ears.

Riven flinched. "Don’t—!" he snapped, though his voice was more breathy than commanding.

"Oh? You don’t like this?" Ronan asked, entirely amused.

Riven groaned and tried to curl up into a ball, hiding his ears, but Ronan was faster. He gently tugged the ear free, brushing his lips over the velvety tip.

"They’re sensitive," Riven muttered, covering his face with his hands. "Why does everyone want to play with them?"

"Because they’re adorable," Ronan said simply, pressing a kiss to Riven’s temple.

Riven peeked through his fingers and saw the genuine fondness in Ronan’s expression. It made something in his chest ache — a mix of warmth, embarrassment, and that strange flutter that always followed Ronan around like a scent trail.

"I’m still mad," Riven muttered. "But maybe... just a little less."

"That’s okay," Ronan said with a grin. "I’ll keep earning your forgiveness."

They stayed like that for a while — curled up under the moonlight in the quiet garden behind the mansion. The moon hung high and proud in the sky, casting a soft silver glow across Riven’s hair and Ronan’s shoulders. The trees whispered in the night breeze, and for a rare moment, everything felt still. Peaceful.

Ronan stared at Riven intensely, and Riven had to look away, he could not bear that gaze. It gave him butterflies.

"Like I said, I will be with you every step along the way. I don’t why you could not shift before, but now you can, and you will only be better." Ronan tried to placate his sad wolf again.

’Yeah, yeah, easy for you to say!’ Riven rolled his eyes a little before looking back and Ronan. He looked at him with a smile that was very endearing, like a boy spending time with his first crush.

Riven leaned down and pressed a soft kiss to Ronan’s lips, one that lingered, but he did not use his tongue. Once he felt satisfied, he pulled back. But Ronan was not satisfied with that. novelbuddy.cσ๓

"Hmm?" Ronan’s chest vibrated with his deep voice.
