Chapter 70: A Family

After waving off the sable Jaguar, which had just dropped her off, Min-Ha entered her home.

A voice greeted her.

"You are late."

She jumped in surprise.

"You scared me!"

In the dark, her parents and younger sister were lounging around. She was expecting them to be asleep, but there they were, waiting for her.

Her father was reading the previous day’s newspaper in the light of the lamp; her mother was watching the TV; and her sister was playing on her smartphone.

"What is going on, Min-Ha?" her mother asked, looking concerned. "You have been coming home late recently."

"Yeah, sis, tell us." Yun-Ha sniggered maliciously. "Who’s the guy you’re fooling around with?"

"Yun-Ha!"

Her mother rebuked her.

"We don’t talk like that in this house!" She turned to her eldest daughter. "So, who is the guy you are seeing?"

"It’s not like that," Min-Ha protested.

"Come clean, sis. I saw you chatting with someone at night. You were smiling like a dork."

That was the time she was sending ideas regarding Averie’s new style.

Min-Ha hadn’t yet told her family about Averie. Thinking it was as good a time as any, she decided to come clean.

"Dad, Mom, I have an announcement to make."

Seeing her solemn expression, both of her parents sat up straight. They were convinced that she had decided to get married.

Yun-Ha narrowed her eyes.

All those drama shows had put scandalous ideas in her head.

’She is definitely pregnant,’ she thought. ’Who’s the father? Why isn’t he here? Is he saying it’s not his? Who’s the scumbag? Will I have to change its diapers?’

Min-Ha looked them each in the eye and said, "I quit my job."

The look of utter disappointment and disgust in their eyes was a sight to see as the tension deflated from the air.

"That’s all?" Yun-Ha clicked her tongue, her attention once again on her phone. "You are boring, sis."

"And here I thought she was finally seeing someone," her mother complained. "Maybe she is hopeless."

Her father went back to his newspaper.

"Don’t be ashamed to chase girls if boys are too hard to catch. Do you understand, Min-Ha?"

Her parents had abandoned hope for her professional aspirations the day she said she wanted to be a fashion designer.

That did not work out, so she chose to be a stylist. Her relatives gave her grief over it.

She became the family loser. She was the kid every parent told their child not to be like.

At first, it was heartbreaking. But she quickly got used to it. The spirit of resilience and defiance had seeped into her over time.

Perhaps that was why the more she talked with Averie, the more she felt like he was the better version of her.

He had taken the art of ’living by your own rules’ to another level. It was inspiring.

So, today, she was not afraid to say it.

"I am working for someone else now."

"Is that so?" her father said with apparent disinterest.

Her mother was a little more inquisitive, if only out of courtesy.

"Is the salary the same? Who are you working for? Loret Entertainment is big; are you working for them?"

"No, I am working directly with an actor. He is not with a company."

Their attention was once again on her.

"I don’t know if you know him. He is new to the industry."

With every word, they were getting more and more worried for their daughter.

"What’s his name?" her mother cautiously asked.

She did not want to. She was afraid of finding out more.

"Averie Quinn Auclair."

Before Min-Ha could blink, Yun-Ha was standing right in front of her, grabbing her by the collar.

"You lie, you die."

There was a fanatic energy around her sister.

Her parents should have reprimanded her and taken her to a psychologist. Instead, they chose to question Min-Ha.

Her mother looked at her with suspicion.

"You are working for Asmodeus?"

Min-Ha was surprised. "You guys watched that show?"

"Of course, we did," her father uttered. "We are old. We don’t miss good shows."

Apparently, everyone in her family was a fan of the show. Her relatives were no exception.

They demanded proof.

Min-Ha gladly showed them a picture of her with Averie.

In that moment, Yun-Ha reached enlightenment.

"Are you the one who worked on his new look?" she asked, her hands quivering.

When Min-Ha nodded, her younger sister fell to her knees and kowtowed.

To Yun-Ha, her sister’s position in the family hierarchy had risen significantly.

"Thank you for the gift!" she yelled like a moron.

She had been drooling over Averie’s new look for hours before her sister arrived, and she wasn’t alone.

AQuinn, Averie’s biggest fan club, had been seeing the biggest surge in site visitors since Asmodeus Binsfeld’s death in the sixth episode of BSPH.

Her parents embraced each other and shed tears of joy. Finally, the good-for-nothing of the Byun family had made them proud.

Her father patted her on the shoulder.

"You may not be a doctor—"

"Or a lawyer," her mother interjected.

"Or an engineer," Yun-Ha said.

"—but at least you are not the shame of the family anymore."

Her mother quickly called her sister-in-law to relay the good news. She made it sound like an ordinary event. When in reality, she was boasting with a big smile.

After an hour of answering their questions about Averie, Min-Ha entered her room and jumped on her bed.

’What a selfish family.’

Still, she was somewhat happy. It had been a while since they talked so thoroughly.

’Was I in middle school when they began demanding more from me?’

Her calling had never been in the textbooks. She remembered feeling ashamed about it.

Was that normal? Or was that a cultural thing? She wondered if it was the same everywhere.

’Is it the same in Europe and America?’

She wanted to see for herself.

’Maybe I will get to go there soon.’

Working and traveling overseas sounded magical. It seemed like something Averie was destined to do.

She wrapped herself in blankets. The night was chilly.

’Before that, I should leave this house.’

True freedom wasn’t around her family, or so she felt.

It was somewhere else. It was on the roads and constant need to better oneself. It was around those who did not care about life’s troubles.

Her home felt like a prison.

Min-Ha picked up her phone and logged into her Delfa account. She needed to take her mind off her worries.

Online, the diehard fans of Averie and BSPH were enraged at Jiwon Kim and Min-Ho Kim. It didn’t take a genius to understand what poor bloke they were cursing out in the viral live stream.

The things they said about Averie and Ellie were simply disgusting to the neutrals. And even their fans were having a hard time defending them.

The internet was a depressing sight.

Min-Ha put down her phone and closed her eyes, hoping to have sweet dreams.

If only she had watched the screen a minute longer, she would not have missed a concerning article that was just published.

’[Ding-Scandal-Ling] Averie Quinn Auclair admits to doing sexual favors for the role of Asmodeus Binsfeld.’
