Chapter 207: Chapter 207: Cake

However, faced with Cecilia’s refusal, these people weren’t about to give up. Since the path through Gallodro was a dead end, they figured they would just go straight to Lu Xiao.

And so, Lu Xiao started to notice something. At some point, she began to inexplicably run into people on her way to and from work. At first, it was fine—just one or two—but soon, their numbers began to grow.

And the amount of time they wanted to spend talking to her increased as well.

Even if Lu Xiao hadn’t figured out their motives at first, she certainly had by now. Faced with someone trying to shove a bank card into her hand, Lu Xiao jerked her arm away. "I understand why all of you are trying to find me, but please, this isn’t necessary. I’m a therapist. Treating the S-Class males inside the sanctuary is my job. Thank you for thinking so highly of me, but I hope you won’t come here again in the future. This is a place of work, so please don’t disturb anyone else. Thank you."

With that, Lu Xiao turned and left without another moment’s delay.

Teacher Ai Li saw her enter and said, "Those people are masters of playing dumb. They saw you didn’t turn them away the first few times, so they just got greedier. I’ve already notified security. Starting tomorrow, they’ll be dispersed."

"Thank you so much, Teacher Ai Li. I originally thought they just wanted to express their gratitude. I guess I was wrong."

Seeing Lu Xiao’s rare look of frustration, Teacher Ai Li smiled and patted her on the shoulder. "You’ll get used to this sort of thing after you’ve been through it a few times. Don’t overthink it. Now that everyone knows how capable you are, it’s normal for people like this to appear. You should head home early today. Don’t give them another chance. Once they see your attitude, they’ll understand."

Lu Xiao didn’t refuse.

She packed her things and left work early.

On the way home, however, Lu Xiao didn’t take her usual route, worried she might run into someone else.

The detour was longer, but it allowed her to stop by the bakery and pick up a cake.

She had discovered that Cecilia had a sweet tooth, and she was especially fond of the desserts from this particular shop. So, Lu Xiao would occasionally stop by to buy a slice for her.

She had already placed an order before leaving work.

It should be ready for her to pick up now. As she pushed open the door and stepped inside, a server behind the counter looked up with a smile and said, "Welcome, can I... Oh! It’s you, Lady Lu Xiao."

Being recognized so suddenly made Lu Xiao’s heart skip a beat. ’Am I really so famous now that anyone can recognize me?’

Suppressing her surprise, Lu Xiao looked at him. "How do you know me? Have we met before?"

The smile on the man’s face froze for an instant before returning to normal. "A person of your importance has many things on their mind, Lady Lu Xiao. It’s only natural that you don’t remember me. But how could I ever forget you? You helped me once, back at the Female Protection Association. My name is Platinum, I don’t know if you recall? You even advised me to get a different job, which is how I ended up here. I never thought I’d run into you again. It’s really great to see you."

Hearing his explanation, Lu Xiao remembered. "Oh, it’s you. They didn’t give you any more trouble after that, did they?"

"Thanks to you, they haven’t. What did you order? Please, let me pay for it as a thank you."

"That’s not necessary, I’ve already paid. Just focus on working hard and living a good life. You don’t have to keep it in mind." Lu Xiao said with a smile to Platinum, then took the cake box from another server who handed it to her. "It was nice seeing you. Goodbye."

Seeing that Lu Xiao was about to leave, Platinum suddenly rushed out from behind the counter to open the door for her. "Lady Lu Xiao," he said, "could I get your contact information? I promise I won’t bother you. I’d just like to have it as a memento."

After what she had just been through, Lu Xiao was particularly sensitive to this sort of request. She smiled and shook her head. "I’m afraid that’s not very convenient. Besides, if you had my contact, wouldn’t you be reminded of what happened every time you saw it? It’s better to look forward. You don’t need to dwell on it. I would have done the same for anyone in that situation. Goodbye, and I wish you all the best!"

Without another word, Lu Xiao returned to her hover car and drove away.

Watching Lu Xiao leave, Platinum poked the inside of his cheek with his tongue, then a smirk spread across his lips. "Well now, I’ve been rejected!"

C Luo, wearing a chef’s hat, emerged from the pastry kitchen. "Did Lady Lu Xiao really just come by?"

Platinum turned to look at him. "You’re too late. She’s already gone."

’And she rejected my request,’ he thought. ’She didn’t give me even the slightest opening.’

C Luo’s lips thinned. He turned to go back, but Platinum spoke again. "She lied to you so badly back then, and you still want to see her? What do you think she’ll do if she sees you? Have you arrested? Thrown in prison to await your sentence?"

C Luo stopped but didn’t turn around. He just said, "At least she was willing to lie to me."

Leaving those words hanging in the air, C Luo pulled the door open again and was gone.

Left standing alone, Platinum’s eyes darkened.

When Lu Xiao got home, Cecilia’s eyes lit up at the sight of the cake box in her hands. "Did my sweet granddaughter bring her grandmother another treat?"

"We agreed, just one small piece. We’ll save the rest to eat over the next few days. I’m going to give the rest to the butler and have him keep an eye on you. We can’t have a repeat of last time, with you getting up in the middle of the night to sneak a bite!"

Remembering how she’d been caught red-handed during her midnight snack raid, Cecilia’s face flushed. She cleared her throat. "That was only one time."

Lu Xiao laughed. "Once is one time too many."

"I know, I know," Cecilia said meekly, before a thought occurred to her. "Why are you home so early today?"

It wasn’t her usual time to get off work yet.

Lu Xiao sighed and explained what had happened. Cecilia wasn’t entirely surprised. "You just hadn’t run into this sort of thing before. It’s good that you have now. There will probably be a lot more of it in the future, so you should be mentally prepared."

Lu Xiao nodded. "I know. As what’s happening at the sanctuary becomes more public, it’s only natural that some people will get ideas. I wasn’t thinking along those lines before, but I will be from now on."

It wasn’t that she was completely naive; she could tell that those people were trying to win her over.

"You don’t need to worry too much about it. They’re the ones who need something from you. Aside from being annoying, they wouldn’t dare to actually do anything to you," Cecilia said, her hand already reaching for the cake, clearly unable to resist the temptation.

Lu Xiao saw this but didn’t stop her. Instead, she opened the cake box and asked, "Which piece would you like?"

Cecilia immediately leaned in close. "Cut it from here, the part with the strawberry, all the way to here."

"No way, that’s too big."

At that, Cecilia had to concede. "Fine, start cutting from the strawberry. You can decide how big the piece is."

Lu Xiao was amused by her grandmother’s pitiful expression. "If you behave and don’t sneak any more bites, I’ll buy this for you more often in the future."

Cecilia’s face immediately lit up. "Then I’ll definitely behave!"

’It wasn’t that she couldn’t afford her own cake. It’s just that when her granddaughter bought it for her, it tasted completely different!’
