He Does Not Deserve My Devotion-Chapter 67: Going to Register with Clara Jacobs
Due to the typhoon, Aethel had given everyone the day off. But Aiden Sinclair still came to the office to handle work, where he found Jay Keane looking miserable.
"You can take the day off if you’re tired."
"It’s not me, Mr. Sinclair. I’m worried about your health. Your last injury hasn’t fully healed, and you got soaked in the rain last night. If you don’t rest properly, you’ll get sick again."
After leaving the hospital last night, Aiden Sinclair had disappeared somewhere. He returned covered in mud and soaked to the bone.
"I’m not that fragile."
Besides, his plan was at its most critical stage. He couldn’t afford to let his guard down.
Aiden Sinclair worked for a while before Sophia Sawyer called. Clara Jacobs’s father, Clark Jacobs, had arrived and was now at the hospital. Aiden had to go.
Aiden Sinclair took his time, getting a few things in order before driving to the hospital.
...
The Hospital.
Clara Jacobs had thrown a tantrum all night over Aiden Sinclair’s coldness. She couldn’t figure out how she’d given herself away, or how Aiden knew that she wasn’t the one in the hotel room that night.
She couldn’t accept it. She had fallen down the stairs—a serious fall—and yet Aiden Sinclair didn’t seem to care in the slightest.
Between the physical pain and her inner frustration, Clara Jacobs had cried and fussed all night until she was finally given a sedative and fell asleep.
Clara Jacobs’s father had braved the typhoon, traveling through the night to get there. He wore glasses, and his scholarly air was a perfect match for his background in IT research.
"You’ve seen it for yourself. Clara refuses to marry anyone but him. Aiden Sinclair has gotten out of hand, and there’s nothing I can do to control him anymore," Sophia Sawyer said.
Clark Jacobs nodded. "I know Clara’s temperament. I spoiled her rotten, and it’s been hard on you lately. Leave the rest to me. I’ll make Aiden Sinclair marry Clara willingly. And the Sinclair family fortune will soon be back in your and Aiden’s hands."
Clark Jacobs and Sophia Sawyer had been high school classmates. Clark’s wife had died from complications while giving birth to Clara.
When Clara Jacobs was eighteen, Clark Jacobs moved his entire family to Ferelden for the sake of his company’s growth.
Now, his company had secured stable, core technology and held significant influence in the smart home market.
Just as they were speaking, Aiden Sinclair arrived at the hospital.
Clark Jacobs watched the dynamic, imposing young man approach and couldn’t help but remark, "It’s been a few years. Aiden has become even more sharp and capable."
Aiden Sinclair swept a dismissive glance over Clark Jacobs. "I have life to thank for it."
Sensing his impatience, Clark Jacobs got straight to the point. "I came back to the country to finalize your and Clara’s marriage. You two have been going in circles for so many years. It’s time for a resolution."
Aiden Sinclair smiled. "And your terms?"
Clark Jacobs detected a hint of mockery in that smile. Swallowing his anger, he began his pitch: "You must have seen how the Jacobs Group has developed in Ferelden over the last two years. Clara is my only daughter. If you’re willing to marry her, the Jacobs Group can offer unconditional support for Aethel’s expansion in Ferelden, and even into Veridia."
Clark Jacobs was offering his entire company as Clara’s dowry. With such powerful backing, Aiden Sinclair’s chances in his competition against Julian Sinclair would be much greater.
Aiden Sinclair seemed to give it some serious thought before replying briskly, "I’ll be waiting for her at the entrance of the Marriage Bureau tomorrow."
Clark Jacobs was stunned that Aiden Sinclair had agreed so quickly, but on second thought, he realized it made sense.
Aiden Sinclair was an ambitious man, and businessmen are driven by profit. He would never pass up an asset as valuable as the Jacobs Group.
When Clara Jacobs woke up to the good news, all her aches and pains vanished in an instant.
"Tomorrow, Aiden and I are going to register our marriage! I have to look absolutely beautiful. I’m going to buy a new outfit."
Clara Jacobs immediately checked out of the hospital and charged into a shopping mall, going on a massive spree.
...
On the way back to the office, Jay Keane couldn’t help but steal glances at Aiden Sinclair in the back seat.
’In the past, working for Aiden Sinclair had been simple. He was a formidable decision-maker, a relentless workaholic—powerful, but easy to understand.’ Lately, however, Jay felt his boss was becoming more and more inscrutable.
’Does Mr. Sinclair love Ms. Jacobs?’
’It seems like it. Everyone says Ms. Jacobs was his first love. He wrote her several large boxes’ worth of love letters. How could he do that if he didn’t love her?’
’After Ms. Jacobs returned to the country, he bankrolled her acting career, a new company, jewelry, houses, cars... He even gifted her a private racecourse. Who knows how much all that cost. How could he be willing to spoil her so extravagantly if he didn’t love her?’
’And yet, Jay had also seen Aiden Sinclair personally find a gynecologist to help Nina Walsh with her health. He’d seen him cook for Nina when she had a cold. He’d seen him carry Nina, who was terrified of heights, all the way down from a Ferris wheel and through the entire amusement park just to comfort her.’
’It was obvious he had saved all his tenderness for Nina.’
’But... does Mr. Sinclair love Miss Walsh?’
’Then Jay Keane would remember how cold and ruthless Aiden Sinclair had been to Nina before, and all his certainty would vanish.’
"Mr. Sinclair, are you really going to register your marriage with Ms. Jacobs tomorrow?" Jay Keane couldn’t hold back the question any longer.
Aiden Sinclair gazed out the window. "And what’s wrong with that? Once I’ve allied with the Jacobs Group, no one in Crestfall will be able to stand against me."
Jay Keane said nothing. ’Maybe I’m just overthinking this. Mr. Sinclair is still the same man he always was, willing to sacrifice anything for his career—including his own marriage.’
...
"Those are beautiful. Let me try them on."
Clara Jacobs pointed to a pair of high heels on a display shelf, inlaid with brilliant pavé diamonds. A sales associate immediately retrieved them and knelt down to help her try them on.
The entire, vast store had been closed to the public just to serve Clara Jacobs alone.
After much deliberation, Clara Jacobs finally selected a pair of shoes worthy of her marriage registration the next day.
After buying the shoes, Clara Jacobs immediately went to the boutique next door and selected several outfits. Seemingly tireless, she continued to shop her way through the entire mall.
Five hours later, she had finally gathered everything she wanted and headed home, laden with her purchases.
"Home. I’m going to take a long bath and have a spa treatment so I can be at my most beautiful for the Marriage Bureau tomorrow."
Clara Jacobs pulled open the car door, but just as she was about to get in, there was a sudden, loud THWACK. A blow landed on her head, and her vision went black as she collapsed to the ground.
...
"Nina, the typhoon has caused a lot of flight cancellations. The earliest one I could get is at five o’clock this afternoon."
Declan Grant handed the plane tickets to Nina Walsh.
"Are you absolutely sure you want to go with me?" Declan Grant asked again, just to be sure.
Nina Walsh nodded. "I’m sure."
"Alright. Is there anything you need to get ready? I can take care of it for you."
Nina Walsh thought for a moment. ’Two hours ago, I called Leo Lloyd and entrusted all of Maelie’s business to him. I also emailed him the designs for several new collections, so I don’t need to worry about the company for the time being.’
The only thing left that she was worried about was that her mother’s urn and personal belongings were still in Hayley Vance’s possession.
’Once she left this time, she might never come back.’
"Second Brother Grant, could you take me somewhere to pick something up?"
