Chapter 50: Chapter 50 Because I Like You

Magnus’s Dongfeng Warrior wasn’t far from the sleeper bus. He and Sarah stuck a torch in the dirt outside, then climbed into the back seat one after the other. After checking for mosquitoes and pulling off their helmets, a strange nervousness crept in.

They’d been through nine months of life and death together - by now, you’d think they’d be like a weathered old couple. But still, the tension lingered.

"Magnus..."

Sarah lowered her head, holding her safety helmet in her lap, not daring to meet his eyes.

"Mm?" Magnus answered softly.

After a brief pause, Sarah whispered, "Can I ask you two questions?"

Magnus sighed and watched the road through the windshield. "If it’s about the birthmark, I can’t tell you anything."

"Then... can I just ask one?" she murmured, still not looking up.

That made him chuckle. "Go ahead. I’ll answer whatever I can."

Finally, Sarah lifted her gaze. Her big eyes caught the glint of moonlight, locking onto his with a quiet intensity that made his heart skip a beat. Word by word, she asked, "Magnus, can you tell me... why are you so good to me? Why do you treat me so differently?"

Anyone with half a brain could see how Magnus cared for Sarah, and it was probably the only reason the other women in the team hadn’t hounded him.

Earlier, Sarah had confessed to Taylor that Magnus accidentally touched her rear. The two shared everything, and though Taylor was mad at first, she ended up being glad for her. When Magnus left the car earlier, Taylor had even urged Sarah to come clean about her feelings.

"I..." Magnus stared into her eyes, pure sincerity in his voice. "Because I like you."

Sarah’s cheeks flushed crimson, the color rising all the way to her neck. She dropped her head again, all flustered - hadn’t expected him to say it so plainly. Now probably her turn to say something, but she couldn’t form the words, with her heart banging like a wild mouse in a tiny cage.

"B-but what about Emily and Grace? You’re not being fair," Sarah stammered.

Magnus let out a barely audible sigh. In his past life, Grace and Emily never gave him the time of day. Back then, this kind of problem hadn’t existed.

"There’s nothing between me and them. You’re overthinking it," he said calmly.

"No!" Sarah blurted, panicked. "If this gets out, things in the group will get weird. I don’t want the team to fall apart because of me. If that’s how it’s going to be... then just pretend I never came to see you tonight."

Magnus tensed and quickly tried to explain, "I swear, there’s really nothing going on between us!"

But Sarah looked to the side, eyes full of doubt. "During meals, they always give you the meat out of their bowls. Tonight, both Grace and Emily claimed they didn’t like eggs, so they gave theirs to you..."

Magnus tried to defend himself, "Aren’t there a bunch of girls who don’t like hard-boiled eggs? It’s not that weird."

"Then why didn’t Grace give hers to her sister? Why does it have to be you?" Sarah pressed, her voice tinged with emotion. "And what about Emily? She’s close with Liana, right? Why not share with her? Why only you? Can’t you see it, you big dummy?"

Nothing he could say now. He had no good answer - only silence.

"I might be slow, but I’m not stupid..." Sarah muttered under her breath. "And Sophia... I heard from Charlotte that whenever she’s around someone she doesn’t like, she just goes completely silent. But when she’s with you? She doesn’t shut up. Even Charlotte finds it odd."

She fell quiet again. Honestly, Magnus thought she was overthinking everything.

"And that Taylor, ugh!" Sarah huffed, clearly getting worked up. "I know her too well - so fussy it drives even me crazy. She’s borderline obsessive about cleanliness... but the other day, she not only picked out meat for you, she dipped her fork right into your soup. And then kept eating with those same fork like it was nothing!"

She was spiraling now. Magnus sighed, exasperated, and finally cut in, "Sarah, why did you really want to talk tonight?"

"I..." She stopped mid-sentence.

Seeing Sarah like that, a soft feeling welled up in Magnus’s heart. It reminded him of simpler times. He reached over, gently brushed her hair back, placed a strong hand on her shoulder, and pulled her into his arms.

Their lips crashed together - hot, desperate. She kissed him like she’d been starving for him.

Without a word, she slid down, fingers tugging at his belt. His pants dropped to his thighs, cock springing free - already hard.

Still standing, she lifted one leg, hooked it around his waist, and pressed her inner thigh tightly against his shaft. Hot. Slick. Bare.

Then she started moving.

Slow, deliberate pressure as she ground her thigh along his cock, trapping it between her skin and his abs. The friction made his breath stutter.

"Fuck..." he groaned, hips jerking into her rhythm.

She kept going - faster, tighter - until his hands gripped her hips, and with a low growl, he came. Hot spurts spilled across her thigh, his chest heaving.

She leaned up, kissed his jaw. "Better?"

He didn’t answer - just pulled her back into a kiss, already hardening again...

The next morning, by 6:30, the team had finished breakfast and set to work mining the meteorites. Magnus picked a smaller one and got to digging himself, with Sarah, Taylor, and Grace helping clear the dirt around it. The four worked smoothly together.

Sarah’s attitude had done a complete turnaround. Anytime Magnus sat down to rest, she stepped right up and started massaging his shoulders, arms, even his legs - without a hint of hesitation.

Taylor and Grace just stood there, dumbfounded.

Eventually, understanding dawned on Taylor’s face, while Grace just stood there watching them, frozen in place...

"Grace! Taylor! You two just gonna stand there or what?" Sarah’s voice had a new strength to it - bold and full of confidence. She marched over and tugged at both of them. "Come on, help out! He’s the only one among us who doesn’t mind getting his hands dirty."

Magnus shot to his feet like he’d been electrocuted. "I’m good now, thanks!"

By 2:45 that afternoon, all 57 meteorites in Dunwich Hollow had been dug up. Liana was off counting them precisely, while Emily and Sophia made the rounds telling everyone to get back to the sleeper truck and prep for departure. The drivers were already forming up.

At the village entrance, the vehicles turned around. Magnus, Sarah, and their group were still in the lead vehicle, heading for the wood processing plant - just as planned the night before.

Fifteen kilometers passed without trouble. They went by Unity Point and Redridge Hold where the meteorites were untouched. With night falling, Magnus didn’t want to waste time or risk splitting the team.

He remembered how, in his past life, the Ice Regiment used to get into blood-soaked fights over a single rock, sometimes against teams of dozens or even hundreds. Now? They had enough strength to ignore them completely, didn’t even slow the car down.

Magnus couldn’t help but feel the irony of it - that twisted "new money" arrogance.

The sawmill ahead was massive, set on cheap land out in the outskirts. A 3-meter wall surrounded it, topped with steel-wire fencing littered with thorny centipedes and dried-up spiders.

The front gate loomed tall, with the nearby guard booth in ruins - glass shattered, revealing three or four shriveled corpses inside.

And now they were here again.

Magnus’s vehicle rolled to a stop at the gate, and a chill of familiarity ran through him. It felt like returning in glory - but that wasn’t quite it. It also wasn’t just nostalgia.

This place... was once the Ice Regiment’s first base in his past life. And also where most of them met their end.

If he had to describe the place?

It was damned haunting. Like the place had its own kind of magic.
