Half-Hearted: Mr. Sinclair, Stop the Act!-Chapter 91: Testing and Warning
June Ewing frowned slightly, could it be that Caleb did something out of line again?
She asked with concern on her face, "What happened? Don’t worry, tell Mom about it."
Sienna Monroe shook her head with a smile, "No, maybe Caleb’s business trips and overtime this year are more frequent than last year, plus my sensitivity during pregnancy, making me feel a bit uneasy."
June Ewing caught a hint in her words.
Business trips and overtime frequency?
Her heart sank slightly.
Indeed, she had found traces of Caleb with Vivian Nash together these days, but hadn’t found when they got involved.
Could it be that those so-called business trips and overtime were to accompany Vivian Nash?
She showed no indication on her face, teasing with a smile, "Pregnancy is like that, they say pregnant women would cry sadly upon seeing a crescent moon, right?"
She then asked as if unintentionally, "Caleb has been traveling and working overtime often this year?"
Sienna caught those two seconds of pause in her words, also heard the probing intention in her words.
Not sure if June Ewing was too perceptive, or these things were left over from her past experiences with Isaac Sinclair.
No clue escapes her eye.
Sienna nodded lightly, looking conflicted, "Well, it seems like every month he would have a business trip. And... I always feel like he is hiding something from me..."
It seems likely.
Those overtime and business trips were indeed to be with Vivian Nash.
A hint of gloom flickered in June Ewing’s eyes, but her face maintained a warm and gentle smile. She waved away the servants, asking, "Do you still suspect Caleb is having an affair?"
Sienna, seeing her smile, once again truly felt the idiom "hidden thorns in soft cotton."
June Ewing had always been like this, planting deep pits of traps in her soft-spoken words.
The seemingly ordinary question was probing Sienna’s deliberate guidance of Cecilia York to investigate Vivian Nash a while ago.
But the suspicion was exactly what Sienna wanted.
This way June Ewing would believe she didn’t know the truth, and all these guesses and probes came only from Vivian Nash’s provocation and Caleb’s abnormal behavior.
June Ewing would naturally hold Vivian Nash accountable.
Sienna showed a face of bewilderment, "I... can’t vouch for it, but Caleb’s abnormal behavior lately always gives me that feeling. I’ve seen him several times holding his phone, chatting with someone in a very tender manner..."
June Ewing furrowed her brow slightly, continuing to ask, "Then who do you think, if he really is cheating, the affair is with?"
Sienna opened her mouth as if to speak but hesitated, "I..."
June Ewing stared at her intently, naturally noticing the conflict she was showing.
From what she knew, Sienna and Vivian Nash had known each other for ten years; she might have some doubts about Vivian Nash but was reluctant to be sure or to believe.
Nor willing to confront the fact that her deeply loving husband could betray her.
Hence Cecilia York’s investigation guidance.
Thinking this way, it seemed reasonable enough.
Her mind flashed to Cecilia’s mention of the waffle incident, a slight discomfort creeping in.
Vivian Nash was clearly flaunting in front of Sienna.
No wonder Sienna doubted Caleb’s loyalty!
That little vixen, no easy lamp to handle indeed!
Suppressing that little malice, she still softly soothed Sienna, "Sienna, you have to trust Caleb; he loves you so much, how could he possibly do something to hurt you?
Let him take you out for a change of scenery once he’s back from this trip. This way, you won’t easily fall into postpartum depression, which isn’t something to joke about."
Indeed.
If he loved her, how could he bear to hurt her like this?
Ultimately, maybe he doesn’t love her enough.
But now, whether he loves or not is no longer important.
Sienna gave a gentle smile, "I understand."
After dinner, the mother and daughter-in-law went to the living room, the rain outside seeming heavier, occasionally accompanied by flashes of lightning, followed by a rumble of thunder.
June Ewing remarked, "This winter has seen quite a lot of rain; it’s been raining quite a few times since autumn started."
Sienna gazed at the heavy rain outside, her eyes flickering slightly.
Suddenly, a thought arose.
The real ledger in June Ewing’s study...
This might be a chance to get the real ledger.
She must stay here!
She inhaled calmly, appearing wistful, "Not sure when this rain will stop; with it pouring so hard, going back today seems difficult."
June Ewing laughed, "Then don’t go back; since your dad and Caleb are both on business trips, you’d be alone if you went back, I’d be bored alone too, much better to keep one another company.
Once Caleb returns from his trip, let him pick you up; for now, comfortably stay here with me. The room has all the necessities prepared, need anything else, just tell Mrs. Lewis."
Sienna was taken aback.
June Ewing agreed just like that?
The surprise in her eyes shifted to warmth, smiling she agreed, "Sure, then I’ll stay for a few days to eat and chat with you."
The two chatted in the living room until after nine, then June Ewing had her go upstairs to rest.
Exiting the elevator, she instinctively glanced toward the camera ahead, her lips pressed into a straight line.
The second-floor hallway is curved, June Ewing’s small study happens to be at the curve’s bend.
To get in, the camera must be avoided first.
But the power outage trick has been used twice already; using it a third time, given June Ewing’s suspicious and keen nature, might alert a snake in the grass.
Quickly contemplating her options in mind, she walked steadily to her and Caleb’s room.
Downstairs, June Ewing watched her enter the elevator, her smile fading instantly, calling Mrs. Lewis from the kitchen with a somber face.
"Prepare a few dishes Caleb loves for him tomorrow at noon, remember, they must be delivered to him personally, say that I prepared them, and remind him not to work himself too hard.
Mrs. Lewis heard, somewhat surprised.
Wasn’t it just mentioned that young master is on a business trip?
Why deliver food to the company?
"What is it?" June Ewing glared at her expression, asking displeasedly.
Mrs. Lewis hurriedly responded, "Nothing, I got it."
The following noon.
Mrs. Lewis carried two insulated containers and a pot of soup into Sinclair Group’s construction company.
Not having made an appointment, she wasted over ten minutes downstairs at reception before they contacted the executive office, finally being allowed entry.
Taking the elevator to the 16th-floor executive office, Caleb’s assistant was already waiting outside the elevator.
"Hello, I’m Mr. Sinclair’s special assistant, surname Langley."
Mrs. Lewis greeted with a smile, explaining her purpose, "Madam said young master has been busy lately, surely hasn’t eaten well, so she sent me with some homemade dishes he likes."
Special Assistant Langley nodded, "Thank you for coming all this way, I’ll pass these words to Mr. Sinclair."
Saying that, he tried to take the insulated containers from her.
But Mrs. Lewis avoided him, smiling apologetically, "I’m sorry, madam instructed that I hand them personally to young master, would you mind leading the way?"
Special Assistant Langley paused, not insisting, then stepped aside gesturing a polite "please," leading her directly to the office.
Caleb seemed quite surprised seeing Mrs. Lewis.
He knew Mrs. Lewis was hired by his mother, having worked for nearly ten years as a chef at the old manor, his mother trusted her deeply.
Mrs. Lewis placed the items on the coffee table, relaying June Ewing’s words from before she left the house this morning, "Last night Sienna went for dinner, but with the heavy rain, madam kept her at the old manor, asking you to pick her up in a few days."
Caleb’s movements stiffened slightly.
Sienna went to the old manor?
Hadn’t she mentioned her business trip to Mom?
No, Sienna went alone, Mom surely asked.
Also asking him to pick her up in a few days...
And especially sending food over.
He drew a tight breath, staring at the insulated containers on the table, inexplicably feeling a sense of panic.
Was Mom probing and admonishing him?
