Half-Hearted: Mr. Sinclair, Stop the Act!-Chapter 75: Fake Ledgers
June Ewing had been lying in bed at home for three days. Every evening after work, Sienna Monroe would go over to check on her, have dinner with her, and chat a bit.
During these days, Isaac Sinclair had been investigating the person behind the anonymous allegation, but there hadn’t been much progress.
Sienna wasn’t worried that he’d find anything out, but each time she heard June complain, she’d still feel a sense of relief.
By the fourth day, June finally got out of bed and left her room. Her complexion still didn’t look good, pale and weak, as if she had been heavily impacted by the situation.
Sienna helped her sit down on the couch in the living room, taking the bird’s nest soup brought by a servant, "Mom, try this."
"Hmm. The taste is not bad, quite delicate. Did you buy this?" June tasted a couple of spoonfuls and asked softly.
"I wouldn’t dare take the credit for this. Caleb specifically bought it for you."
June’s smile deepened slightly, "Why wouldn’t you take the credit? These days, you’ve been busy and still find time to take care of me. It’s hard work, Sienna."
"I’m just here for the free meal, how can that be called hard work? But Cecilia has genuinely been worried about you, she’s lost weight. She’s been so busy with the art gallery lately, pulling overtime, that she hasn’t had time to come."
"That child is too sincere. Tell her I’m fine and she should focus on her work, don’t get distracted."
"I’ll tell her tomorrow."
As they were speaking, the light in the room dimmed considerably.
June looked up at the living room light, frowning, "It’s getting dark. Why aren’t the lights on?"
A servant stepped forward, "Second Madam, there was a short circuit on the main building side around four in the afternoon. The butler has called someone to fix it. It should be done in less than half an hour."
June furrowed her brows.
Has the house’s electrical wiring been this unstable recently?
The butler hurriedly entered through the side building’s door, nodding slightly toward the two of them in acknowledgment.
Finally, he spoke to June, "Second Madam, I heard you came downstairs. The First Madam would like you to come over to the main building."
June paused in her action of drinking the bird’s nest soup, a hint of impatience appeared on her face, but her tone remained gentle, "I haven’t been feeling well these past few days, so I won’t go over. Just tell me what the First Madam wants."
"That I don’t know. Originally, two days ago, the First Madam sent someone to invite you, but considering you were not feeling well, they didn’t disturb you."
June’s frown deepened.
Despite his respectful words, his tone was clearly firm.
The butler is Rhonda Garrison’s man, so his attitude represents Rhonda’s attitude.
There was no need to guess, she knew Rhonda couldn’t stand Isaac flitting around her with such urgency every day, and made an excuse to call her over to vent her frustration.
This was inevitable sooner or later; Isaac would be back in less than half an hour.
After weighing her options, she slowly stood up, speaking weakly, "In that case, I’ll go over."
"Mom, should I accompany you?" Sienna also stood up.
"No need." June looked at her kindly and sighed softly, "Do you think being called by the First Madam means anything good? Why go with me and endure it too; just wait for me here."
Sienna watched the departing figure, the worry in her eyes slowly faded, replaced by calmness.
About two minutes later, she found an excuse to go upstairs, back to June’s small study, heading straight for the safe.
She crouched down and entered the password.
The safe made a slight "click" as the door opened.
As before, the first and second layers were large jewelry boxes, and the third held some cash and small gold bars.
The fourth layer was where the documents were.
She took them out to look and found that the project plan that was at the bottom before was missing, leaving only a ledger.
Time was tight; Rhonda had said she could only stall June for about ten minutes, so she didn’t linger too long on the project plan, flipping open the ledgers instead. With no time to read them, she quickly took photos with her phone.
The ledger wasn’t too thick but had over twenty pages.
Sienna took clear photos of each page, finally organizing and putting everything back. Just as she was about to close the safe door.
Her phone chimed with a notification.
"This ledger is new, copied by June Ewing after checking with the tax bureau, and half of it has been doctored into false accounts to mislead. The real ledger is in the top right of the bookshelf, camouflaged with book covers."
Sienna paused, frowning at the message on her phone.
Fake?
It’s a fake.
She stepped to the bookshelf, her eyes fixed on the top row.
Those were all literary books; at a glance, nothing seemed out of place.
The bookshelf stood over two meters tall, and she was scanning the room for a stool to stand on when her phone suddenly chimed with a "ding."
It was a WeChat message from First Madam Rhonda.
"Isaac is back, walking with June toward the side building."
June had only been gone for about seven or eight minutes.
Already back!
She gritted her teeth, forced to abandon it for now. She stepped out of the study, gently closing the door behind her, walked a few steps, then turned into June’s room, grabbed her purse, and walked calmly down the stairs.
Her phone received another text message.
"June’s ledger with Mrs. Vaughn and Mrs. Landor’s dividends is in the cabinet on the right side of the desk at Radiance Beauty Spa, password is a fingerprint lock. The 20th was originally their monthly dividend day, delayed because Radiance Spa is currently closed."
She hesitated, pausing for a moment, her gaze fixed.
Dividend ledger...
Of course.
Since June co-ran an underground business with others, there must be a dividend ledger.
But how to get it?
It’s a fingerprint lock; trying to open it blindly would surely alert June.
Before she could think further, Isaac and June’s figures appeared in the living room.
June looked at Sienna on the stairs, her soft voice carrying a hint of laughter but with an undertone of scrutiny, "Sienna, what are you doing standing there?"
