Chapter 211: Su Mo (II)

The atmosphere suddenly turned sombre, and the mers who were speaking turned quiet.

Su Mo: "..."

He licked his dry lips and didn’t respond. His hands quickly cleaned up another patch of mushrooms that was growing outside the field. He didn’t want to get involved in all of these conspiracy theories. His heart did reach out to Master Yuan, who lost his daughter, but that was it. He didn’t have any other feelings regarding the incident where the death hunters stole the totem core of his daughter. But that didn’t mean that he was going to lose himself by relying on someone else.

Ignoring the many gazes that were fixated on him, he arched his waist slightly and turned to look to the right. However, just as he turned his face slightly, his gaze met with those dark red eyes that seemed to have a hook attached to them. Just one gaze, and Su Mo felt his heart lurch forward. His eyes widened in alarm, and he stood up straight. "Who’s there?"

He was afraid that this woman was one of the death hunters who killed Master Yuan’s daughter.

"What happened?" one of the women who was working turned to look at Su Mo and asked with a frown. "Why are you yelling so loudly?"

"Just now I felt like someone was peeking at us," Su Mo replied with his brows furrowed in a frown.

"What are you worried about? There are so many warriors with us. It must be some brat trying to peek at the pretty mers working in the field." One of the older mers joked while collecting the mushrooms in the field. "Especially you, Su Mo. You are truly eye candy for many of the women and men in the tribe."

Su Mo flushed red under the teasing of the elders.

"Right, right. Isn’t Su Mo around the age when women want to just gobble him up? He is so good-looking and capable; it’s not a surprise that the women around want to take him as their mate," another mer joked while looking at Su Mo, whose face was getting redder by the minute.

"You—you guys stop teasing me, alright?" Su Mo was blushing so hard that his expression was getting a little twisted. The mer’s face was so red that it was dripping red ink.

"You are really cute, Su Mo. How come you are not resistant to such jokes even though it has been so many years?"

"Being too shy is not good for you. Women and men like bold mers—even a mer would want to have someone who teases and keeps things exciting between the two of them."

"That’s right, how will you survive by staying so honest? It’s better if you learn a few things that might help you in the long run."

Ruan Chanchan stepped back when she heard that the conversation was getting a bit too chaotic. Especially the bit where the mers were telling Su Mo to knock her out and have his way with her. Because once the meat was cooked, what could Ruan Chanchan even do other than accept him?

Ruan Chanchan didn’t know that the mers here were so open. They even told Su Mo to tear her clothes off if it meant getting her.

Really? Is this what the mers teach one another now? What kind of twisted teachings were these? Ruan Chanchan was simply speechless, and she could feel her face burning with humiliation. She never thought that one day she would have to worry about her virtue like this. Not that she was bothered by the twisted imagination of these mers, but still —ahem!

"Pfft.. ahahaha." Xiao Xi held back his laughter, but he couldn’t help it when he saw Ruan Chanchan’s face turning red with shame and embarrassment. Especially when he heard the good things that the mers were saying.

"Ahem..." Ruan Chanchan coughed and glared at the system that was laughing its head off. "You don’t need to join in the fun, do you?" She turned to look at the mer who was standing in front of her and asked, "Were you talking about Su Mo?"

"I was."

"What do you mean by ’you were? Did you not say that you knew someone who could work for me?" Ruan Chanchan frowned. Just a second ago, the mer was all about letting his friend work for him, and now he was looking at Su Mo as if he were his greatest enemy.

Yuan Ni pursed his lips and didn’t say anything. He wanted to say that he no longer wanted Su Mo to work for Ruan Chanchan because all the teasing and leg pulling that the mers did just now made his heart burn with anger that he didn’t even know existed. He didn’t know why he was angry; he just knew that he was angry at something, or more like at Su Mo.

He wished he could charge right straight into the crowd and stop this nonsensical gossip, but he couldn’t say anything because they were not doing anything wrong. They were doing what everyone did. There was nothing wrong with what they said or did, so how could he stop them?

"I did —" Yuan Ni pursed his lips. He wanted to say that he was taking his words back, but changed his mind when he saw Ruan Chanchan frowning hard at him. "It’s nothing; I just wanted to say that Su Mo is a really hard-working and kind mer. He is just a bit stubborn at times." Yuan Ni praised, but at the same time, he felt a bit resistant.

"What’s the matter?" Ruan Chanchan asked when she saw the mer looking at her with a troubled look on his face.

"Su Mo’s parents passed away when he was very young, and he was raised by his two uncles. Neither of them is imprinted; they are surviving on their own in the cave where the rest of the tribe lives. However, the two of them ended up getting pregnant a few months ago. Ever since then, he has worked harder than ever. He wants to take care of his uncles."

"Well, he is doing the right thing."
