Chapter 32 - They'll Pay

We finished eating and headed toward the hotel where Yin Hee and the child were staying. Before that, though, we stopped by a vape shop to pick up a few backups, just in case the main one broke.

Leaving the shop, I took a deep, satisfying puff, exhaling a thick cloud of smoke that I shaped into two hoverboards. We hopped on and flew to the hotel.

Once we arrived at the room, Eve glanced around and casually concluded, "There's no one here." She plopped down on the bed, found it comfortable, and soon lay flat, sighing, "This feels nice."

I scanned the room for any sign they had left a message. Nothing stood out—except the bed. As I checked it, a small slip of paper peeking from under the pillow caught my eye.

I pulled it out. It was a note.

*Good job finding this note, uncle! It seems your age hasn't dulled your observation skills at all! Anyway, I'm out with sis Yin Hee! So come find us!*

Uncle?! You brat! I nearly screamed reading that part. As I continued, a pounding headache flared behind my eyes. I massaged my glabella to ease the growing ache.

"What does it say?" Eve asked, curious.

I handed her the note and slumped onto the bed beside her, pinching my chin in thought.

"Who's Yin Hee? Your girlfriend?" she teased.

"No. Yin Hee's the one I mentioned earlier—the one helping us track down the guy who hired Scarecrow."

"So who wrote the note?"

"An ungrateful brat."

"Brat?"

"No—never mind. Let's go find them. They shouldn't be hard to spot."

I opened the window, took a long drag, and breathed out a misty cloud. The smoke was light but enough to track them down.

Suddenly, the door slammed open, crashing into the wall with a loud *thud*. Eve instinctively dove for cover behind the wall, and without hesitation, I shifted into a translucent mist.

As a mist, I turned to see Calvin standing there, clutching a bundle of balloons, with Yin Hee trailing behind him, looking completely worn out.

The next instant, Yin Hee shoved Calvin behind her and tensed up, scanning the room like a cornered animal.

I reverted to my human form, and her sharp gaze locked onto me. Her body tensed, ready to attack—but upon recognizing me, she relaxed.

"Oh, Mist, you're back."

"Where did you go?" I asked, noticing Eve, still hidden behind the wall, clutching a table ready to smash Yin Hee with it. I shook my head slightly. She nodded, setting the table back down, and leaned casually against the wall, observing.

Yin Hee, oblivious to Eve's presence—probably thanks to Eve's ability—bowed her head slightly in apology.

"Sorry, Mist. Calvin slipped away when I wasn't paying attention. I found him playing with some kids in the park... he looked so happy, I couldn't bring myself to interrupt," she explained, bowing her head deeply.

"Leave sis Yin Hee alone, uncle!" Calvin shouted, stepping in front of her protectively with arms wide.

I stared at them for a moment, then sighed. "I'm not mad. Just let me know next time, alright? Also, stop calling me *uncle*. I'm still young!"

"You're an uncle because you act like one!" Calvin said, jabbing his finger at me.

"This argument's not going anywhere," I muttered, brushing it off. I turned back to Yin Hee. "Did anyone drop by while I was gone?"

"No," she replied.

I frowned slightly, wondering why Ginto hadn't shown up yet. Still, I figured he had his reasons. Just in case he arrived later, I shot him a quick message, telling him he could wait for us here.

"By the way, Mist," Yin Hee said, her gaze shifting behind me. "Is that who I think it is?"

"Yeah."

Her face lit up like a festival. "This is the best day of my life! You two should know I shipped you so hard in my fanfic! Do you wanna read it?" she chirped, fishing out her phone.

She showed it to Eve, who read a few lines and looked at Yin Hee, impressed.

"This is actually good," Eve said with a chuckle, "but why did you ship me with *him*?"

"Because you two have been inseparable ever since Synth recognized you both as official Honors!" Yin Hee rattled off excitedly. "You even fought in the same squad against the shadows! You're like the main characters of an epic story—the destined duo!"

Eve chuckled sweetly. "It's just coincidence we got recognized at the same time, not because we were in the same squad. This guy practically begged to stay with me."

"Shut up," I muttered. "Your powers were the only thing keeping me alive—that's why I stayed close."

"Aww, don't be embarrassed," Eve teased. "It's normal for a guy to stick close to his crush."

"Let's drop this," I said flatly. "We're not here to talk about the past."

"But *I'm* here for it!" Yin Hee exclaimed brightly.

"Yin Hee, shut up."

"Yes, I'm sorry," she said quickly, though her mischievous grin showed she wasn't sorry at all.

"I'll tell you more later," Eve whispered to Yin Hee.

Yin Hee beamed. "Really?! You're the best!"

"Of course. Unlike *someone* who's petty about the past," Eve added, shooting me a sly look.

"Do as you wish," I said with a shrug, my attention drifting back to Calvin.

"Kid, you heard everything from Mark. What are you planning to do?"

He hesitated, thinking deeply. "I wanted to kill them—at least, that's what I thought at first. But sister Yin Hee taught me something... that killing is wrong." His gaze hardened. "But I don't plan to forgive them. They'll pay."
