Gourmet: From a Stall in Northern Europe-Chapter 35: All the Students Have Arrived
"Oh my God, Holy Mother Mary above, the police officer actually ate the duck intestines!"
"So... so impressive!"
When the children heard that the box contained intestines, their expressions turned somewhat fearful, and now they were utterly shocked.
Lin Chen poked his head out of the food truck with a smile: "Kids, do you want to be a dashing police officer in the future?"
"Yes!!"
"Then come on, the intestines cooking challenge welcomes you! If you can’t accomplish such a simple task as eating, then you won’t be a qualified police officer, right, gentlemen?"
The two police officers puffed out their chests and raised their chins: "Absolutely! To become a police officer, you need a strong physique, eat everything, and have a well-rounded diet!"
With that, the two of them grabbed some much thinner chicken intestines and stuffed them into their mouths.
This time, their actions were much smoother, with little hesitation, crunching away quite happily.
A few kids exchanged glances and started reaching into their pockets to step forward.
"Boss, I want to take on the intestines challenge too! How much is a portion? I might not have enough pocket money..."
"No worries, you can buy a small portion for just 1 euro."
After all, the system didn’t specify the quantity; as long as someone eats and gives positive feedback, it should be fine, right?
The money doesn’t matter that much since it’s a challenge task; completing it is good enough.
Upon hearing that they could join for 1 euro, several kids breathed a sigh of relief and came up to order their duck intestines.
At this moment, the two officers had finished the box of chicken and duck intestines. They originally wanted to pair it with cold beer, but in front of kids, they had to hold back and avoid setting a negative example.
Looking at the remaining pig intestines as thick as fingers, they gulped, their eyes betraying a hint of trepidation.
The size difference was obvious, and the appearance was completely different; it looked a bit nauseating.
Upon closer inspection, though it had no strange smell, it inevitably had the unique scent of pig intestines.
"Can we... really eat this?"
Without speaking openly, they cast questioning glances at Lucas and Lin Chen.
Lin Chen returned a reassuring look, casually picking up a fatty intestine, snipping off a piece with scissors, and popping it into his mouth, not forgetting to hand a piece to Lucas as well.
"I don’t want this, I want the intestine head, that’s tastier!"
"?"
This guy is picky!
Exasperated, he swapped it for a piece of the intestine head, and Lucas grinned as he took it, tearing into it bite by bite, the muscle fibers on the intestine wall clearly visible as they were torn apart.
As fellow Westerners, the two officers were sparked by Lucas, and their nearly extinguished competitive spirit burned once again.
If regular citizens could eat it, then they could too! 𝘧𝓇𝑒𝑒𝑤ℯ𝑏𝓃𝘰𝑣ℯ𝘭.𝘤ℴ𝘮
Taking a bite, one of them froze instantly, and the other didn’t fare much better.
The texture of the fatty intestine was terribly peculiar, slick, like a piece of fatty meat with toughness, and it had a unique flavor, completely different level of challenge compared to chicken or duck intestines.
"Hey! What delicious treats are you having?"
More students came out from the school gate, curious to see the food truck and officers, and they approached to inquire.
"Offal challenge!"
"They say it’s one of Great Xia’s most traditional street foods. These two officers have successfully completed the whole challenge, including hearts, intestines, and more, which is simply incredible!"
"What?!"
"They can even eat intestines?"
"Not surprising for the officers!"
Hearing the exclamations around them, the two closed their eyes, silently sucking the remaining fatty intestines into their mouths, pretending to chew heartily, as if enjoying themselves.
As they chewed, the unique oily flavor of the intestines grew stronger.
Whether from numbness or whatnot, their expressions actually began to relax.
With the two setting examples, the elementary school students eagerly joined the challenge.
The entry-level difficulty of chicken and duck intestines was near zero, and those who tried them mostly gave positive feedback; some even got addicted and spent all their pocket money to buy more snacks to try.
If such frightening things like intestines could be made so delicious, could other meats be heavenly?
"Boss, I want to taste these pig ears."
"Can I get just one chicken wing?"
"This duck intestine is unexpectedly tasty, can I have another full portion?"
"What’s this round thing? Pig tail? Is it tasty?"
As more and more students gathered, news of the offal challenge spread around, even prompting some to call friends over with their phones; there was hardly any need for Lin Chen and Lucas to worry.
Many parents also grew keenly curious.
The police here typically bought burgers, pizzas, tacos, hot dogs to fill up, since food trucks usually sold these.
But now, out of nowhere appeared a food truck selling Great Xia cuisine, and officers and kids were eating it. Did that mean it tasted great?
Plus, food recognized by officers must be safer to eat.
With growing numbers, the two officers became tense.
After all, it was roadside, close to school dismissal time, with vehicles frequently passing by, and something was bound to happen.
They had to abandon their food boxes and started helping maintain the scene’s order, as part of their duties.
"Have you heard? There’s a food truck making Great Xia cuisine by the school gate, holding some challenge?"
"It’s an offal challenge, apparently two officers have completed all the challenges, even eating three kinds of intestines and hearts and such—truly impressive!"
"What?? Intestines and hearts? Can you eat those things? Just thinking about it is terrifying."
"That’s why they’re capable of being police officers."
"Pfft, it’s just offal; foie gras and beef liver are classic French dishes, maybe other parts are tasty too?"
"You’re right, I’ve got to taste it; if I miss today, who knows when the chance will come again."
The news about the Great Xia Food Truck spread like wildfire across the playground, prompting numerous idle students to stand up and head to the school gate.
Normal foods like chicken legs, chicken wings, duck legs sold best, quickly taking up half of the stock, some parents even packing more to-go after tasting.
Next was pig ears, with relatively low terror index compared to other parts, and it didn’t look so strange.
After tasting the crunchy tendons, most diners were won over by it, though a few couldn’t overcome the psychological barrier and yakked on the spot.
Lin Chen had seen such things a lot, foreigners’ acceptance rate was unimaginably low.
As long as the food or texture wasn’t familiar, most would have psychological aversion or physical repulsion.
