Chapter 47: A series of Unfortunate Events. (1/3)

The sandworm stared back at Vale with both curiosity and bloodthirst. Vale’s mouth was slightly agape as he tried to slowly step backwards.

Then it began moving, slowly slithering towards the trio. With a tentative pace, it inched closer to them.

The others had noticed its presence, and along with Vale they began moving back. Still trying their best to stay as hidden as possible.

They maintained a uniform distance between each other, as they all moved forward, but the worm’s speed was steadily increasing. Its bloodlust urged it to attack, but the little intelligence it possessed told it to be afraid. 𝐟𝗿𝐞𝚎𝚠𝐞𝚋𝕟𝐨𝚟𝐞𝕝.𝕔𝕠𝚖

But at that moment, its bloodlust had the upper hand.

Vale tried his very best to keep a distance between them, but it soon became clear that if they didn’t start running, the golden sandworm would catch up to them.

Trapped with no room for hesitation, his brain moved at lightning speed to come up with a solution. One that would enable them to get away without having to fight.

Nothing; his brain told him there was nothing he could do to achieve that.

The only option for him was to either fight or run. No in-betweens and no easy way out. He would have to choose.

Fighting seemed like the more feasible option as if he could get rid of the worm silently and fast, the threat would be dissolved. Right now the creature was still afraid of him, he could take advantage of that and end its life swiftly.

He was a hunter after all. If he continued running he wouldn’t be a true hunter. After all, with prey moving towards him he should be delighted to end its life.

Just as these thoughts ran through his mind, his feet came to a strange halt as a familiar red glint flickered within his eyes.

Since he was left with no other choice, he would hunt.

Roxy tried dragging his shirt, now wasn’t the time to be zoning out. To her, it was still best to try to maintain a distance while observing. But Vale had made up his mind.

The worm seemed to notice the change in the human as it stopped.

But then it burst forth with speed as he ran towards Vale.

To Vale though, it was slow—no, not slow, he could just predict its movements. This was the first time he felt so in control while in the Primal state. With a single step to the side, he dodged the creature’s lunge and sent out his dagger.

The golden worm seemed to have expected this as it whipped its lower body towards Vale, who used his free hand to block the strike.

He was able to slice open a deep wound on its back before the blow pushed him away.

Vale looked around, and seeing that no other sandworm had been attracted, a grimace formed on his face.

His legs burst with speed as he rushed forward and for a moment the golden worm’s sole eye couldn’t keep up with his movements. It, however, wasn’t stupid and immediately dug its way into the ground, leaving Vale without a target.

Normally this would have been a perfect moment for them to try and shake it off while continuing to move forward.

But that wasn’t possible anymore. Not while the hunt had started.

With crimson eyes, he bent low and felt the soil. In the Primal state, not only was his physical condition boosted, but even his senses were greatly improved. When he placed his hand on the ground, he felt the vibration of the sand, the faint heartbeat of the worm beneath, the distant shuffle of Rein and Roxy—everything sharpened into focus.

Roxy seemed to discern that something was up as she dragged Rein away from the fight.

Roxy frowned as she watched Vale place his hand on the sand—he was acting unusually, and it was off-putting.

The golden worm dove out of the ground from behind Vale, but he was already prepared, swinging his dagger to his back. He didn’t hit anything as it was just a feint. The worm had retracted back into the ground immediately.

A few seconds went by and the worm came out again. Vale swung, but missed: another feint.

The third time, it came from directly underneath Vale.

Vale had felt its movements and jumped away before the attack arrived and for a single second, the worm was wide open.

Its sole eye seemed to widen as it realised it hadn’t caught the human.

The next thing it felt was the painful feeling of the sharp dagger puncturing its skin. But Vale wasn’t done yet, he dragged the blade down with such force that it had torn open the creature.

Fear and reluctance clouded the creature’s eyes as its internal organs spilled on the sand.

Falling towards the ground, it looked at the human one last time. This wasn’t how it was supposed to go. But right now its death was certain.

Vale let out a sigh of relief as a wave of intense exhaustion washed over him. The red in his eyes faded, replaced by the usual gray. And he couldn’t help but feel triumphant for the kill.

The hunt had finally ended. If not for the fact that he was still in the desert he would have screamed into the distance.

Just as he was expecting a system notification, something else happened. Something that shouldn’t have happened. The creature that was supposed to die within a few seconds, let out a loud and sharp shriek. It was so loud that Vale had to cover his ears.

But as blood flowed from his ears, he couldn’t care less about the pain.

He raised his head in horror and the last expression he saw from the golden sandworm was a deeply mocking gaze.

Then the entire desert fell silent as all the sand worms stopped moving. The tension was so palpable that it made Vale unable to breathe. Then all at once, the patches of undulating soil started moving towards him

’Oh no.’

______

You successfully killed a sand worm.

You have gained 9 common demon points.

You obtained an Image [Rest In Peace]

______

If this were any other time, Vale would have been ecstatic about obtaining an image. But right now, that didn’t bring him an iota of comfort.

Looking behind, Rein and Roxy had already created some distance from him. If they were lucky, they wouldn’t be affected by the incoming horde. If there was someone he needed to be worried about, it would be himself.
