***
The firearm was a large ways more terrifying than anything that had existed before it.
Said terror came in the form of its first and last skill.
The first skill, {Gilded Touch}, was a rather wicked curse-like spell of petrification. However, unlike a systematic petrification spells, upon contact with a target, the energy within the bullet would instantly corrupt the wound and begin, quite literally, transmuting the entity’s flesh until a large patch of it was turned into solid gold.
Of course, each shot was lethal. However, that meant the firearm would also be very useful in taking out much larger creatures, weighing them down and allowing for ease of slaughter.
Its third skill was rather strange, but straightforward. Before making the weapon, he had consulted with Beorstone and the other Dwarves, and he had been convinced to inscribe more than a few runes and magic circles he could make no sense of.
The final results, was something that surpassed his expectations in more ways than one...
For starters, depending on his will, the form of the magical firearm could change.
From what he knew, it had three forms— a smaller double-barrelled shotgun, a much larger, much higher caliber sniping rifle, and the final one was a freaking hand cannon.
Granted, all three forms were more of estimation that what they actually were.
In reality, he had only every used the form it currently assumed, which was its double-barrelled form.
And while the monster did pack a punch, it was also rather quick.
Without taking aim, Cain began to fire with reckless abandon into the crowd of Rotworms.
About to stab a Rotworm through the heart, Blaze jerked back in shock as something smashed into its head, instantly turning it into a jagged golden lump.
The creature struggled frantically for a few moments, then collapsed into the ground.
The next moment, it exploded into flames just like all the others. Only this time, the explosion was a bit more subdued.
’What the hell was that?!’ Blaze thought to himself.
The same phenomenon began randomly appearing all over the chaotic battlefield.
Most of those fighting could very easily hold their own, even against the force of such a large horde. However, the resulting explosion after the death of the beast was rather nasty, creating a situation where those fighting were a little hesitant to kill too many at once, lest they get blown to bits in the wake of their own success.
And yet, as the golden flashing lights fell from the dark heavens, the explosions from the beasts hit with the golden bullets was much more subdued, allowing even more of them to be mowed down more efficiently.
The battle was bloody and gruesome.
As he cut through another dozen or so, Cain’s eyes narrowed as he tried searching for a coordinator.
Sure enough, he suddenly heard a loud, resonant call coming from the rear of the horde.
His eyes glowed briefly as his pupils narrowed into pinheads, accurately picking up where the sound came from.
’Got you.’
Standing on a jagged mound of dark earth was a rather abominable creature much larger than any of the surrounding Rotworms.
Its frame was not just larger, but its ears and maw were enormous when compared to the rest of its body.
With ears rippling on the wind like waves of water, its eyes seemed to cut through the darkness, watching the entire scope of the battlefield with extreme vigilance despite keeping a rather low profile, perhaps due to some form of natural camouflaging.
That was why it noticed him the moment his gaze caught it.
It opened its maw and let out a terrifying shriek as it jumped back.
With murderous intent on his mind, Cain fired bullets at the thing. Two Rotworms jumped in the path, catching the bullets instead as they lunged towards him.
More of the surrounding Rotworms rushed to pile up before him to allow it escape.
Cain responded by hefting his blade another his head.
Even in the darkness, it was shocking possible to make out the illusory image of a malignant, vile, and monstrous black dragon that appeared for a moment.
The threads of Demon Matter boiled over and traveled in a powerful circular wave around him. This dark wave was concentrated destruction at itself finest, tearing through the tender bodies of the Rotworms.
The next moment, an enormous sea of flames lit up the entire battlefield.
So enormous was it, it seemed to kick up a terrible chain reaction, killing and forcing other Rotworms scattered around to explode as well.
Cain dove through the flames.
His expression changed as he noticed the flames clinging to his flesh. Despite his flame resistance, he realized he was enduring some damage, mostly became of the intensity of the conflagration, but also because of the special nature of the flame.
Ignoring that, he continued flying after the fleeing beast.
Eventually, it came to a stop.
Just when Cain thought it was going to begin a fight, he watched, much to his utter shock, as the creature began to change.
Its body became more elongated and its arms became shorter.
Before he could fully understand what was going on, he watched as the beast began burrowing into the ground.
In a split second, it was gone, leaving behind only a dug up hole.
Cain hovered there for a moment, too shocked to do anything.
"Cain! T-these things..." A voice reached his ears.
He frowned and responded grimly,
"Yeah. I know..."
Their enemy had retreated for the night, but he had a feeling this was just the beginning.
