Chapter 69: Mother of the Web

"There..." Abraham’s finger moved to a heavily guarded area at the far east side of the manhole, the ground floor of a wide building that seemed to have been residential.

The outer walls of the building were broken open and covered with the densest part of silk webbing. Within, one could see egg sacs hanging at the corners.

The Mother Spider was enormous. Easily the size of a two-story building, her shell was dark as night and covered in thick armor plating. Eight massive legs supported her bulk, each one ending in serrated claws that could tear through concrete. Her abdomen pulsed rhythmically, and Roy could see egg sacs hanging beneath it.

Master Abraham covered his eyes just as quickly as he laid his eye on her.

’So that is a Fallen Beast. That’s 20,000 EXP,’ Roy thought. ’Is it sleeping?’

They descended back into the tunnel and explored the other three paths and a bit beyond.

Master Abraham concluded as they walked, "The tunnel system runs beneath the entire web. We can move underneath them without being detected. But extraction will be the problem."

They spent the hour mapping the underground network. The tunnels formed a small grid, marking out a total of seven access points of importance beneath the web, including the central point.

Master Abraham spread out his dataPad. He marked the positions of each spider, even noting their patrol patterns from mere observation. He placed thumb-sized 360-degree cameras on top of the manhole covers he opened.

"The Mother stays in the center. She hasn’t moved since we arrived," Master Abraham said. "The Strange Beasts ones guard the perimeter, while the Weak patrol constantly."

Roy studied the data showing a digital rendition of the complex web structure. "And these are the cocoons..."

"Forty-seven in total. Most contain abyss creatures, based on their size and shape. But as we noted..." Abraham zoomed in on specific red indicators. "Nine are human-sized."

Master Abraham had cross-referenced the access points with the positions of the cocoons above.

"Here." He pointed to a section where three human-shaped cocoons hung close together. "These are our primary targets. They’re far from the Mother Spider, south."

"While the others are spread out. Two are near the Mother. Four are scattered along the east and west of the web." Master Abraham spoke with the experience of a hardened executioner.

"So what’s the plan?" Roy asked. Watching Black Zero make plans close-up, always utilizing every single advantage he could find, inspired Roy. This math guy really knew what he was doing.

"My binary clone will create a disturbance on one side of the web to draw the spiders away. When they investigate, we move in from below, set the explosives, grab the cocoons, and retreat before they return."

"Rinse and repeat," Roy finished.

"Three times at most. My clone will be battling the Mother, but that won’t stop it from sending her children after us when it notices something is wrong. Our exit access point is this one in the west. Hillary should be bringing the vehicle over as we speak."

And just like that, the logistics of the suicide mission of saving the trapped experts had been resolved, and a concrete plan was formed.

Roy stared at the map displayed on his holoRadar, whereas the nine human cocoons were marked red. Hopefully, the seven experts were amongst them and still alive.

The first three targets were clustered in a section where the webbing was thinner, further south, so that was where they were headed. While the fake Master Abraham headed north.

North was perfect for it. There were no human-shaped cocoons there.

"Ready?" Abraham asked, just above Roy on the steel-bar ladder.

Roy steeled his mind. "Yeah."

BOOM!

A fairly loud explosion rocked the area. Flames erupted on the northern edge of the web, consuming the silk with surprising speed. The spiders reacted immediately, swarming toward the disturbance with fury.

Black Zero and Roy moved.

They burst out from the manhole, ripping the web apart with their weapons and moving towards the cocoons placed quite high above ground.

Camouflage active, the nearest target hung, swaying slightly in the breeze. Abraham grabbed it while Roy had finished throwing five explosives to the multiple clusters of cocoons.

Placing the first target beside the manhole, Master Abraham conjured his circles to reach the other two and cut them down.

Meanwhile, Roy entered the manhole and then dragged the first cocoon into it.

Done, Roy helped bring in the other two cocoons. After, Master Abraham dropped back into the tunnel, sealing the hatch above him.

"One down," Abraham muttered.

He carefully cut a cocoon open. Lo and behold, inside was a woman in a dirty lab coat, confirmed unconscious but breathing. Her skin was pale, and her pulse was weak.

"She’s alive." Roy felt relieved and happy. He just helped save someone.

Master Abraham administered a stimulant from his med kit. The woman’s eyes fluttered but didn’t open.

"It’ll take a while."

Master Abraham cut open the next two cocoons, but they were filled with two wasp-like creatures with leathery wings that were as tall as the average human.

They seemed freshly wrapped, so Roy quickly blew their large heads apart with the explosive rounds before they could stir awake.

"Heh. Free loot."

"The Mother is on the move. We have to hurry." Master Abraham carried the lady on his back, and they moved to the next two targets at the centre.

Truly, the Mother Spider had left her throne and joined the fight up north.

Abraham cut down the two cocoons while Roy placed even more bombs than before on the cluster of cocoons and egg sacs.

He stepped away from the five large egg sacs but returned with two more bombs.

"Sorry, I can’t let you live," Roy muttered. He wasn’t scared of spiders particularly, but just dreaded the chaos these thousand hatchlings could wreak.

He shivered even thinking about it.

They returned to the tunnel with the two cocoons, once again sealing the cover above them.

"My clone is luring the other spiders away from the web, but the Mother isn’t leaving. It has sensed something is wrong."

Master Abraham spared no time and tore a cocoon.

This one contained a brutish-looking man in military gear, an executioner based on the badge on his uniform. He was in worse shape, with deep gashes across his chest.

Abraham used a health box, activating his Circle of Order. The wounds closed slowly, and the man’s breathing steadied.

"That’s two now." Roy felt a flicker of hope.

But the third cocoon shattered that hope.

When they cut it open, viscous liquid poured out, carrying the dissolved remains of what had once been an abyss creature. The spiders had been feeding.

"Goddammit," Roy muttered, turning away from the stench.

The stench seemed to stir the lady, and her eyes flickered open.

"Ugh, wh-where am I?" She spotted the two males standing before her, armed in dark suits that obscured most of their faces and flinched back, wary.

"Black Zero, D-Class. There’s no time to explain—"

Suddenly, a loud laugh cut Master Abraham off. The hairy, brutish man with a gash on his chest sat up and folded his arms.

With a wide smile, he voiced, "WOLFMAN, D-CLASS! GIVE ME AN ORDER!"

Master Abraham didn’t hesitate and pointed west. "Carry her to the first access point you see on this path and wait."

"NOTED!"

The executioner, Wolfman, got on his feet and grabbed the lady, placing her on his broad shoulders. She complained of his handling of her, but he just laughed.

"Woke up from the dead and already fired up," Roy said, sprinting beside Master Abraham towards the east access point. "What a weird guy."

They sprang out from the manhole and moved fast. To their surprise, one of the cocoons was already torn open.

Master Abraham didn’t flinch and just cut down the other target, tearing it open then and there.

Liquefied remains spilled out. Roy’s stomach churned seeing that.

Roy threw his bombs that stuck and spotted the missing figure from the cocoon emerging from the window of the building a few metres away.

"Wait! Help!"

The man stumbled through the web, human-sized, desperate. He was in tattered clothing, running, trying to avoid the thick strands of silk.

"There’s someone!" Roy pointed.

The man was moving erratically, panicking in every motion. He had freed himself sometime after the spiders left to attack the binary clone.

BOOM! 𝚏𝕣𝕖𝚎𝚠𝚎𝚋𝚗𝐨𝐯𝕖𝕝.𝕔𝐨𝕞

The ground shook under Roy’s feet, and the crumbling buildings crumbled some more.

He gulped. If Roy knew anything about spiders, they were very good jumpers.

Hence, he didn’t even need to look up yonder to know the Mother of the Web was now before them.
