Chapter 61: In the Eye of the Storm

Abraham let Donald and Roy in through the trashy, messed-up apartment and they entered the wardrobe elevator that led down to his mancave.

"You better make sure he comes back in one piece," Donald warned Abraham.

"I’ll die before he does," Abraham said in passing, not doing much to quell Donald’s rising anxiety. What did he mean he would die before Roy did? Was he already planning to die?

Donald harrumphed. "Ahem, how about... none of you dies?"

Abraham just shrugged and entered the APC. And Roy followed in too.

"Worry more about the abyss creatures that are gonna die," Roy said, sitting down in the seat Donny sat in on their expedition to District 03.

Abraham had over-prepared for the trip. Food rations, water, battery packs, energy crystals, and more were in full stock. The items carried would hardly last the entire six-week training course but it wasn’t meant to. And the items lasting defeated the purpose of going into the wild to train.

"Welcome back, Mr. Roy. How are you feeling today?" Hillary asked, and Roy gave him a jovial answer.

There wasn’t much ceremony after that. Donald said his goodbyes and left Abraham’s apartment, leaving Abraham and Roy in the military vehicle.

Master Abraham was busy on the controls, while Roy wondered what on earth the delay was.

"As you can see, I was giving us idle time for your brother to leave," the C-Class Executioner said before a black, transparent sphere spread out from him, only engulfing him and Roy.

Roy’s eyes displayed the confusion he felt. He could hear nothing, but his breathing and faint heartbeat.

"The current order is set to allow only two of us to make and receive sound. I could have used a JamField, but they aren’t built to be thorough."

"How many things can your [Circle of Order] even do?" Roy wondered out loud. So far, it has touched upon speed, health, and now sound. These three, for the most part, weren’t tangible. Fitting for a system that dealt with intangible numbers and concepts.

Anyway, Abraham ignored his question and continued with what he was saying.

"I need to know a few things before we set off on this journey. But first, let me start with what you need to know: You are being watched, followed, and studied."

"What?" Roy’s mind raced. "W-What do you mean? By who?"

"You should know who," Master Abraham said. He was in his black tactical gear, resembling a cyber assassin. Roy had no idea why he was already dressed when they were still leagues away from their destination.

Roy fell silent. He signed an NDA. He couldn’t tell anyone about his sponsor.

"How did you find out I’m... being spied on? And how long has it been?"

"From the day you first came here. Something or soneone has been in your shadow. In fact, they are there right now. They believe I only spotted them once when they made a mistake and I noticed, but I have known the whole time. In fact, I can kill them right now."

The weight of Master Abraham’s words flipped Roy’s entire world on its head. 𝑓𝓇𝘦ℯ𝘸𝘦𝑏𝓃𝑜𝘷ℯ𝑙.𝑐𝑜𝓂

’Something... has been... in my shadow all this time? Then they know I signed in somewhere.’ Roy could think of only one individual wealthy enough to put an irregular or executioner up to this.

’Cash God! Let me think, have I mentioned [Link] to myself since I met him? No, so they shouldn’t know about it. What about anything of Pierre’s system? Goddammit, I can’t remember!’

Master Abraham saw the horror on Roy’s face and nodded clandestinely.

"Good. That is the expression I was expecting."

"H-How do you know this? How can I trust you’re correct, or that you are even telling the truth?" asked Roy, frightened.

"A C-Class Irregular would have between five skills. Two at first sign in, one more after level 10, another after level 2o, and one more after level 30. So far, you know [Circle of Order], [Solve for X], [Shapes], and [Binary Clone]..."

"So your fifth skill..."

"Actually my second starting skill, along with [Circle of Order]. My passive skill... [Chaos Curse]. I can sense improper variables, also known as ’chaos’, and also attract them unexpectedly. Yes, it is why I always seem to attract false gates."

It all started to make sense for Roy. No wonder he didn’t look offended when Lady Sunfire mentioned his ’luck’ with false gates. He was really cursed.

’Wait, what does that mean for me then? What did it mean for his former raid party?’ Roy’s gaze softened. ’He must blame himself for their death. And in a way, it is his fault.’

Roy wanted to ask a million questions, but his master stopped him and continued.

"This thing in your shadow knows a lot now about you and your system. A lot more than me, and even your brother.

"You and your brother underestimate your importance. In my system world, my starting skills make me a being of order and chaos in a world made up of irrationality and fractions. I am unlike other beings in that world, even among those that possess powers of either order or chaos. And my name is Zero. I stand in the balance and rewrite the laws of my Abstract Dimension.

"I do not know if you lie about your system, but you are Zero of God’s Abyss. In this world, you possess more chaos than I do. Even before you got your system..."

Roy’s eyes widened with every revelation. He believed his mentor was spouting nonsense but with the intensity and gravity of what was being said didn’t let him hold onto that notion for long.

Master Abraham grabbed his arm and Roy looked like a horrified puppy.

"...That false gate wasn’t there for me. It was there for you, Roy. My curse just made Donald bring you to me. The same way your sponsor’s skill brought you to him. I am not the only one who has noticed or will notice this about you. More have already and you do not realize that you are in the eye of the storm. You are already a target. That was why you were attacked."

’So was what that investigator saying true? The attack was from Neo? How did they find out about me?’ More questions sprung, but answers were scarce.

Abraham continued, "Now time for what you have to tell me:

"Roy, can you trust me?"
