Chapter 46: Beware of the King

"Sheesh. Let’s get back home and rest for a few days before we decide," Donald said to Roy dismissively and yawned.

However, Roy dropped a bomb by declaring, "I want to take the coming Irregular Academy entrance exam."

Donald paused and blinked.

"I was actually thinking the same thing, since we understand your system better now. But..."

Roy’s gaze fell. "But Nana, right?"

Donald nodded with folded arms. That old lady was far too paranoid about anything Roy. 𝐟𝐫𝕖𝗲𝘄𝚎𝗯𝕟𝐨𝕧𝐞𝚕.𝕔𝕠𝐦

"You will convince her, won’t you?"

Donny sighed. "It’s not as easy as it sounds. I agreed you would finish high school, remember?"

Roy frowned and folded his arms, letting his mobile device rest on his lap.

"I’m in junior year, already at the end. Irregular Academy is just going to be college for me."

Abraham wasn’t eager to talk, but he chipped in regardless, saying, "Roy’s system is different from most, with the second-highest potential I’ve ever seen in my entire career.

"Keeping him down for sentimental reasons is just foolish, as you never know when a Rank 5 Gate could appear and threaten to end it all. He has to advance as fast as possible, for everyone’s sake."

Donald sighed. "Yeah, that’s true."

Roy felt relieved that his mentor was on his side. However, he picked up on something curious.

"You said mine was the second highest. Who’s the first?"

"Just someone from the past."

Reading between the lines, it was apparent the C-Class Executioner wasn’t willing to share.

Roy turned to Donald and voiced, "I would need to train and prepare for the entrance exam. I don’t even think going back to school at all is—"

"Don’t push your luck," Donald reprimanded him. "You’re going to go to school and also train alongside for the entrance exam. There’s no harm in that."

Roy sank into his chair and pouted.

"Hmph. This isn’t fair."

A brief silence fell upon the vehicle, but was unexpectedly broken by Executioner Abraham.

"The future is already set in stone, forged by the choices made right from when Roy gained his system."

Donald wore a confused and worried expression. "What are you trying to say?"

However, Abraham responded with another question, "How did you get five million dollars?"

Donald and Roy turned to stone with that question. They had signed a Non-Disclosure Agreement.

"W-What does that have to do with anything?" Donny asked back.

"Everything."

Master Abraham didn’t say another word and focused on the road ahead.

’Cryptic-ass words again,’ Roy hissed and decided not to think too much about it if his mentor wasn’t going to be straightforward.

The vehicle was currently in camouflage, driving on the highway connecting Districts 03 and 04.

Arriving back in District 04, the procedure for reentering a ’safe’ district was more rigorous, as they had to be briefly quarantined to ensure they weren’t carrying any viruses or diseases. Regardless, they were allowed to enter the bustling district within about an hour.

Roy let out a sigh of relief.

He enjoyed the sight of numerous vehicles on the road, civilians walking by the side, open shops, skyscrapers displaying advertisements, and the blimps in the sky.

Soon after, they arrived back at Abraham’s cave. Roy turned in the netherstone dagger, and after a brief meeting on the kid’s training schedule, he and Donald picked up their luggage and got into their ride back home.

Abraham watched them leave through his monitors when his communicator rang with a call.

He picked up the phone, and there was no conversation or words exchanged for over three minutes before the call abruptly ended.

Abraham stared ahead with a blank expression.

His robot assistant brought him a cup of coffee. He took it and stared at the gently swirling dark brown liquid.

"Beware of the King," he muttered.

* * *

Cash God just finished a meeting with his board members and returned to his office.

With a thud and sigh, he sat back down on his chair and picked up a cigar on a tray beside him.

The office was just as dark and mafia-esque as before; one wouldn’t even notice the dark shadow rising behind him.

"Anything?" Cash God asked and lit the large cigar.

The shadow’s voice was low and raspy.

"He gains experience points from killing abyss creatures, not only Gate Bosses. He also doesn’t need to enter an abyss gate to gain this EXP.

"His mentor is D-Class Executioner, Black Zero, who was declared mentally unstable by the Association and lived in solitude. He was paid five million from the ten you offered to the Mclloyds to mentor Roy and help him level up.

"Roy said he has only one starting skill, a passive-type called ’2x Multiplier.’ This seems to double the damage of his attacks. He mentioned being able to obtain items by killing abyss creatures; he also gained the abyss soul of a Strange Beast. And alone at night, Roy signs in and keeps this a secret from everyone else, even his brother."

Cash God smirked. "Only one starting skill and secretly signing in somewhere else that isn’t God’s Abyss. The kid’s a terrible liar."

"Black Zero and Roy challenged a gate-break, but it turned out to be a false gate. Abraham fought toe-to-toe with the horde of undead and played around with the Gate Boss, a Mutated Undead, to let Roy kill it using an item that curses things to death. Executioner Sunfire arrived and killed most of the undead, but the kill was still Roy’s. Black Zero isn’t D-Class; he is a C. He told Roy."

Cash God exhaled the cigar smoke. "Of course, he’s not. Abraham Goodwill. I don’t forget geniuses. He would have been an amazing investment. Sigh, too bad he had to go against order. Anything else?"

There was a slight hesitation in the shadow’s response.

"...I was careful not to get too close, but I believe Black Zero noticed me."

Cash God fell silent for some time.

"He surely did. Never mind that. For now, keep a closer eye on Roy. Since we have confirmed his worth, it’s time we spread the crumbs."

Tssss~

The sound of the embers going out as Cash God pressed the butt of the cigar on the tray seemed to be the only sound in the dark office.

His red eye glowed ominously, and he coldly added, "Don’t get noticed this time. If you can’t be truly discreet, it means you have no value anymore. You know I hate bad investments."

The shadow was shaken but composed itself, then slowly disappeared.
