Chapter 600: Chapter 399: Prayers and Small Gains

After quite some time, on a dirt road outside the walls of Novi Town, a passenger carriage sped along, kicking up a large cloud of dust.

"Catch them! For the Duke!"

A dozen or so kingdom guards clad in full steel armor were chasing swiftly behind the carriage on large horses. Despite having the advantage in speed, numbers, and equipment, none of the riders dared to take the lead and maintained a distance of over fifty meters from the carriage. Some even held small round shields with one hand, as if guarding against some unknown threat.

Inside the carriage ahead, a demon hunter with gray-white hair suddenly flashed a cruel smile at the corner of his lips. With a nimble movement, he slipped out from the carriage window and, in a blink, flipped onto the carriage’s rooftop, lying flat with the muzzles of his dual pistols aiming at the pursuing riders.

"I’ve already wiped out so many, yet some fools still challenge death! Let me show you the true might of a Gun Sect demon hunter!"

Gate’s confidence in his own power had reached unprecedented levels. Seeing the armored riders pursuing the carriage, he felt no tension, only seeing them as foolish targets, laughable and pitiful.

Suddenly, deadly blue beams were fired continuously as he pulled the triggers of his laser pistols at high frequency. In the first second, four riders were instantly killed, falling off their horses. In the second, this number increased to six, showing that his marksmanship had grown to a professional level.

The remaining riders, lucky to have avoided his aim, were startled and lost their fighting spirit in this one-sided battle. They pulled the reins of their horses and turned to flee, their previous morale and shouts vanished.

However, Gate, lying on the carriage roof, was not about to let them escape after achieving such an impressive victory. He slightly raised his dual guns for precise aiming, and within two seconds, every enemy retreating a hundred meters away was killed, leaving none alive.

"The power of the Great Lord is indeed unparalleled!"

After annihilating this wave of death-seeking enemies, he immediately voiced his praise, flipped back down from the rooftop, and slipped through the window. He then spoke to the black-haired sorceress Irina inside the carriage:

"All the enemies are eliminated. Now, stop the carriage so I can bring the horses over."

Irina nodded slightly in response. With her eyes closed, she began chanting a spell, causing the conductor of the carriage, whose expression was vacant, to pull the reins and bring the carriage to a rapid stop on the road.

Demon hunter Gate then jumped off the carriage and swiftly attended to the dozen or so corpses and the few horses that hadn’t fled far, knowing these would greatly aid in their subsequent escape.

"Uh... uh... uh!"

Amidst these actions, several strange sounds emanated from the carriage, stopping the blonde sorceress Bella, who had been about to step down to assist. She turned to look at the three women and one man crowded in the carriage.

These four had been rescued from the Novi Town prison not long ago. Their mission then had been smooth, with Gate using his dual pistols in conjunction with her and Irina’s magic to quietly eliminate all the guards without a whisper.

However, they couldn’t rescue everyone as some prisoners had been tortured to the brink of death, losing their consciousness entirely. Their prayers for the Great Lord’s miraculous healing went unanswered.

They had to quickly select four prisoners capable of moving and leave before the outside guards reacted, commandeering a passing carriage and using the Flying Skill to scale the city walls and escape.

Quickly, Novi Town had reacted by dispatching riders and wizards to pursue them. But the overwhelming power of Gate’s laser pistols made these enemies, unfamiliar with such high-tech weapons, seem like fools lining up for slaughter. Even the kingdom wizards emitting Shield Spells couldn’t withstand more than two shots before their chests were pierced and they died, rapidly demoralizing the kingdom’s guards from continuing the chase.

"You must hold on! Everything can be restored! I will try again to plead for my Lord’s power!"

Bella knew that the four they rescued were witches and wizards persecuted by the kingdom. After interrogation, their tongues were cut out to prevent them from casting spells fluently. Even under such torture, their faces revealed an unmistakable joy at gaining freedom and a longing for salvation, despite their inability to speak properly.

"Great Lord! You are the embodiment of mercy! Those who suffer shall receive your salvation!"

Bella continued to implore the Great Lord she believed in. This was something they had tried in the prison, and during the escape, but had received no response. With time now, they could attempt it again.

The failed entreaty did not diminish their faith; instead, it only deepened their piety.

They very well understood that they were mere ordinary followers of the Great Lord, unlike the legendary messenger-level beings. The lack of response was entirely normal. Without patience for such trials, they had no chance of earning the Great Lord’s favor.
