Some find Wang Ergou fascinating and enjoyable; some find Er Gou talkative, cowardly, and not strong enough hence annoying.

Some readers have suggested Little Fish abandon the dog, even threatening with abandoning the book. Of course, other readers argued an earthly dog is of low taste, suggesting to adopt a Taotie or Ying Long as the spirit pet.
