Chapter 159: The Artillery!

The hidden figure remained silent as she watched everything unfold.

Kai moved like a phantom across the battlefield. His speed was so great that he left afterimages in his wake, confusing the Spyders’ targeting systems.

It was definitely a Gene Skill!

’No wonder he’s the Rank 1... I wonder if that Gene Skill is similar to mine...’ she mused.

Soon, smoke grenades burst around him, cloaking his movements in thick clouds.

At times, he seemed to vanish entirely, using a skill or perhaps an item that masked his presence from enemy sensors.

Meanwhile, Atom absorbed the brunt of the fire.

The mechanized soldier accompanying Kai had become the primary target. Its body was even capable of enduring plasma bursts that would have melted through ordinary armor.

Each impact seemed to be capable of destroying a tank, but Atom remained unaffected! It was shielding Kai from the worst of the assault.

Furthermore, Atom wasn’t stopping the destruction of the other Sentinels that came forward!

At that moment, the reinforcements finally arrived as Farrah’s armored car screeched to a halt nearby.

She leapt out, activated her Gene Skill, Knight Armor, and it deflected incoming gunfire!

Bang! Bang! Bang!

Sparks scattered across the barrier’s surface, but it held firm. Thankfully, the Spyders with plasma rifles were already being suppressed by Kai’s precision shots and Atom’s relentless advance.

They only had to worry about the few enemies.

"Kai! You’re fast!" Farrah shouted as she arrived in front of the enemies.

Kai gave her a quick nod before firing another volley into the enemy ranks. His shots were deliberate, not aimed at random targets but at key points to disrupt their formation!

"Do not destroy the cannon!" he ordered sharply. "Cover us!"

The survivors were stunned for a moment after hearing the instruction but they all nodded, emboldened by the sudden arrival of their strongest warriors.

"Cover the Leader! Charge!"

Alfie roared as he dashed forward! Soon, his bat smashed into a Spyder and sent it crashing into the dirt. The other Survivors also poured out of the armored car, prepared to fight to the death.

Only Ralph remained on top of the vehicle, with his rifle ready...

Well, with his Sharpshooter Talent, he picked off plasma rifles before they could fire again.

His magazine was nearly empty, but every shot counted! Each bullet disarmed a weapon or crippled a joint, buying precious seconds for the others.

Kai, however, kept his focus on the artillery. His attacks weren’t meant to destroy it outright. Instead, he targeted its supports, testing its defenses, forcing the mechanized army to react.

Boom!

The artillery’s mechanical body groaned under the assault!

As expected, the Sentinels and Spyders shifted their attention. They ignored the other survivors and concentrated their fire on Kai and Atom.

Plasma streaks lit up the battlefield, scorching the ground and walls, but Kai’s Specter Step carried him through the barrage unharmed.

Atom absorbed the rest, with his reinforced body enduring the punishment.

From the wall of the New Haven Shelter-45, Claire noticed what was happening and clenched her fists.

Her eyes were filled with hope!

"Kai... Atom... you came back just in time." she whispered.

As for the mysterious woman who had remained hidden, her Spirit Points were still recovering. But as she watched the defenders rally, her lips curved into a faint smile. She already wanted to join them...

"I guess he wants control over this artillery," she murmured. "He’s baiting them, not destroying it."

She understood now.

Kai’s strategy wasn’t reckless... it was calculated. By drawing the enemy’s focus onto himself, he forced them to overextend, leaving openings for the others to strike.

The cannon wasn’t his target to destroy... it was definitely his prize to claim.

The mechanized army fought desperately to protect their siege weapon, but the tide had turned.

With Kai and Atom leading the charge, Farrah shielding the team, Ralph covering from above, and the survivors continuing to move forward, the team had found their rhythm!

It didn’t take long before the clash reached its peak.

The defenders, emboldened by Kai and Atom’s arrival, became more confident.

"Push forward! Don’t let them regroup!" Wallace shouted.

Alfie, with his Gladiator Talent, smashed into another Spyder that Ralph had already disarmed.

Thud!

Sparks flew as the machine collapsed and its plasma rifle clattered uselessly to the ground.

"Leave it! Focus on the cores!" Alfie shouted as he saw someone aiming to take the rifle.

In just a few more moments, everything was under their control.

One by one, the Sentinels fell. Atom tore even through them with brute strength, ripping a Sentinel’s arm clean off and throwing it away!

Kai caught the motion and smirked. "Nice throw, Atom. Keep them busy."

On the armored car, Ralph was also done...

"Magazine’s empty!" he shouted down. "You’re on your own now!"

"Don’t worry, you bought us time!" Farrah called back.

Thud! Thud!

As expected, it didn’t take long before the battlefield grew quieter as the last mechanized soldiers collapsed.

Several Sentinels lay broken with their cores shattered, while a dozen or so Spyders were reduced to piles of metal.

Kai lowered his rifle and turned toward the massive artillery.

Its huge frame was quite intimidating. Furthermore, it was still intact despite the chaos. He approached slowly, inspecting its supports and central barrel.

"This weapon... it belongs to us now," Kai said firmly.

Ralph’s eyes lit up. "If we can haul it back, we might actually turn this thing against them!"

Kai nodded, already calculating how to move it. He didn’t even bother checking the notification system for the experience points he had earned from eliminating the Sentinels.

"We’ll figure out how to transport it later. For now, secure the area." His gaze shifted toward the treeline.

It should be around here... Kai thought as he scanned the shadows.

"Enough hiding," Kai called out. "Show yourself."

Thankfully, he didn’t have to repeat himself as the hidden figure stepped forward, and this time, Kai realized it was a woman.

Her movements were calm, unhurried, and she seemed completely unbothered by the chaos around her.

Soon, her face was revealed.

Then, Kai froze as recognition struck him.

"Wait... Mei?" he whispered. 𝕗𝗿𝕖𝐞𝐰𝗲𝕓𝐧𝕠𝕧𝗲𝐥.𝚌𝐨𝚖

The survivors exchanged glances. They all knew that name... it was on the Leaderboard!

Kai didn’t know what to say at first. Finally, he asked,

"Why did you choose this Apocalypse?"
