Chapter 134: New Unit and the Gene Trader

"Swarmers! Hide!" Claire immediately ordered as soon as she heard the noise above them.

Even without seeing them, she recognized the buzzing sound already...

As a matter of fact, Russel and some others were already moving before Claire gave the command.

As for the rest, they had to quickly hide!

Thankfully, all of them are wearing camouflage suits, and they were also in the forest! They should have some advantage.

Furthermore, they had faced Swarmers before... They were tiny insect‑like drones that attacked in clusters. They were weak alone, but terrifying in numbers.

If there weren’t a lot of these drones, they should be able to eliminate all of them at once.

"Sshhh... Do not move. They’re getting close." Russel reminded.

Once they found humans, they would swarm with their needle‑like appendages... Of course, they weren’t draining blood, but instead, they’d normally inject toxins that would paralyze humans.

They needed to be careful when facing them. After all, if these Swarmers weren’t successful in their hunt or there were too many humans for them to handle, they would actually retreat and call for Sentinels.

Whoosshh~

The team quickly ducked under the canopy of trees, pressing themselves against roots and foliage.

As the buzzing grew louder, they all felt a little nervous...

But as they waited, Terrence frowned. Something was off.

The sound was similar, but the shadows passing overhead were larger!

"This is..."

Claire’s eyes widened as she risked a glance upward.

Then, she froze...

These were not Swarmers.

Above them, three small flying vehicles passed overhead... They noticed two mechanized soldiers that looked like Sentinels were mounted on these compact crafts as they hovered and dashed through the air.

’Flying jetskis?’ Claire thought as she looked above...

The machines had solid frames with small indicator lights along their sides.

Surprisingly, these machines weren’t making a very loud noise at all. They were comparable to the sound created by the Swarmers.

Still, Claire’s heart sank.

’New units... Did the system make an update without telling us?’ She couldn’t help but complain inwardly.

However, she already knew that the A.I. Civilization had many types of mechanized units. Perhaps, since they had just finished the first phase of the Apocalypse, they weren’t targeted by stronger A.I. Soldiers yet.

But with the end of the Tyrant Hunt, it seemed that they would be facing stronger enemies from now on.

Up to this point, they had only encountered Swarmers, Sentinels, Hounds, Spyders, and Tyrants... each dangerous in its own way. The Ascendant Unit, however, wasn’t something they had fought against, so Claire couldn’t do it in...

Nonetheless, these flying units, or maybe Sentinel Sky Riders, were something different.

’Ahh... That’s weird...’ Claire thought as he realized that the sentinel in front driving the flying unit, was fused directly to its machine.

Indeed!

Its lower body was merged into the jetski, or flying vehicle’s frame, while its arms drove it!

Behind it sat a Sentinel soldier, gripping a plasma rifle, scanning the forest below.

Whoosh~ Whoosh~ Whoosh~

The three jetskis circled the area as they searched for signs of life.

At this point, even Terrence felt a little scared... If they were found, they had to ensure that the three would be destroyed, or more of them would come and search for their traces.

The team held their breath...

Thankfully, even as leaves rustled faintly, the machines didn’t descend.

After several tense minutes, the buzzing sound of the vehicle’s engine faded as the units moved on!

Claire exhaled slowly, as she finally relaxed....

"They didn’t see us... but we’re not moving yet. They might circle back." She reminded.

After all, it would be a disaster if those things didn’t completely leave yet..

For twenty long minutes, the team remained hidden.

Finally, when the forest grew quiet again, Claire gathered them.

"What the heck are those?"

"It’s my first time seeing them."

"Even the previous elder didn’t mention those flying units..."

"It might be new ones. But it might just be their first time going around this area."

"That’s true... The flying vehicle didn’t look new. Some parts had rust all over."

"I guess they’re just from a different region or something."

The others couldn’t help but guess.

Of course, Claire had similar thoughts, so she shared what was on her mind.

"Yes. We’ve survived the Mech Siege and the Tyrant Hunt... So, it looks like the system has updated the A.I. Army. These flying units might be the new Sentinels. We’ll need to report this to Kai."

Russel cursed under his breath. "As if normal Sentinels weren’t bad enough."

Gabby nodded as she tightened her grip on her weapon, as she knew how dangerous those flying units could be.

"If they can scout from the air, nowhere is safe."

Soon, the team pressed onward, and of course, they were cautious now.

Their mission was still the same... to find a Gene Trader.

Although they were already aware of the location of one of them, it was actually a bit too far, and because of that, it would be very dangerous to travel to and from...

They could be exposed to so many enemies...

Furthermore, they were also planning to abuse the trap, and if it was too far, it would be difficult to mobilize their forces.

Because of that, they limited their search to around three miles of their shelter...

They moved through abandoned sites where the Gene Trader could be hiding. Soon, they arrived at an abandoned town.

"There must be one around here..." Claire firmly believed that one of the Gene Traders was definitely here!

Soon, their group searched a collapsed supermarket.

There were broken carts, collapsed stalls, and dust that coated everything...

Furthermore, there was a stench of rot lingering around.

Claire ordered a quick sweep, but nothing useful remained.

Next was a half‑destroyed apartment block.

The walls were cracked with vines crawling through broken windows. Augustine found a stash of old clothes, but nothing of value.

Soon, Dylan also checked the basement, only to find it flooded.

Hours passed as they searched, but they weren’t finding anything. Not the Gene Trader or any valuable resources they could bring back.

Finally, as they felt that they were wasting time and Claire was about to give a retreat order, one of them spotted something unusual.

He found a wooden structure perched in a large tree at the center of the town!

"A treehouse?" Claire muttered as she saw it...

It was very well made, and it was even camouflaged with leaves.

Claire raised her hand. "That’s it. The Gene Trader must be there!"

Just like that, the team approached cautiously.

Needless to say, to avoid activating the trap, they had decided to send Terrence instead!

At this time, Terrence noticed a rope ladder dangling from the treehouse. It was swaying slightly in the breeze.

"Careful, Terrence... There might be something else living there. Snakes... or maybe a bear." Claire warned.

Terrence smirked. "I will... Also, you can just call me Renz..."

"Renz? Alright..." Claire easily agreed.

Then, as Terrence climbed, he could hear the creaking of the ladder...

It might break at any moment. They definitely had to replace this thing later.

At the top, Terrence swiftly entered the treehouse.

Inside, he immediately recognized the scent of herbs and machinery. Then, at the center, he recognized the familiar Gene Trader!

The Trader was tall, wearing a dark cloak, and seemed like it would disappear at any moment.

It was the familiar appearance of the Gene Trader...

"It’s here!" Terrence immediately informed the people below!

Just like that, everyone celebrated.

Claire immediately ordered a few items to make a new robe ladder. After all, she could tell that the current ones are too brittle at this moment.

In any case, they had plenty of robes in their bags, so it was not a big deal for them...

Meanwhile, Terrence immediately approached the Trader.

Similar to before, the cloaked figure gave no greetings or words...

Instead, the Gene Trader raised a hand and placed a crystal in front of him. The crystal floated upward, glowing faintly, before transforming into a notification window!

[ Gene Trader’s Store ]

[ Survivor Medal Items ] [ Energy Core Items ]

Just like that, he selected the Survivor Medal Items.

He had seen this before...

There were four versions of Enhancement Serums... The Super, Alpha, Prime, and Mutagenic.

Except for the Mutagenic, which costs 1 Medal, the rest cost 3 Medals.

’It’s the same items...’ Terrence muttered after noticing the pills, weapons, accessories, and gene skill crystals being sold...

However, he noticed that this Gene Trader had an additional implant!

The one he was familiar with was the eye implant...

[ Ocular Replacement Implant: A bioengineered eye designed to permanently replace a missing or damaged one. It restores full vision immediately, grants Appraisal Ability...

Cost: 10 Survivor Medals ]

It was something everyone really wanted because of Appraisal Ability... However, since they have perfectly healthy eyes right now, none of them wanted to modify their bodies just yet.

They were also hopeful to get Appraisal Ability through Gene Skill instead...

However, the additional implant being sold was something unexpected!

It was called Arm Replacement Implant, but designed not only to replace a missing limb but also to function as an additional, third arm... even for those who still had two perfectly healthy hands!
