Global Awakening: Apocalypse Ender's Chronicle-Chapter 543 Citadel
543 Citadel
The moment Shane's group arrived a few hundred meters from the citadel, they immediately smelled the sickening stench of undead or rotten flesh. It wasn't that surprising but they still felt uncomfortable.
Nonetheless, all of them had methods to endure it like using their own Aura, Talisman, Skills, or other items in their inventory…
As they did so, something unexpected happened, a notification from the system appeared and it seemed a bit too early since they hadn't even stepped inside the citadel yet!
[ You have entered a Lord-Tier Zombie's Area. ]
Name: Necrotic Swarm Sovereign
Type: Plagueborn Hive-Master
Threat Level: Catastrophic
[ Description: The Necrotic Swarm Sovereign is controlling legions of undead locusts and parasitic maggots. Its body is like a nest, constantly birthing new undead creatures from its flesh. It can command its swarm to strip flesh from bone in seconds, and any creature infected by its parasites may soon join its ranks. Its body exudes a miasma, corroding the air around it. The longer it remains undisturbed, the larger and deadlier its swarm becomes. ]
"It's really here…" Shane muttered to himself.
Soon, they noticed that the sky was covered with darkness.
Above them, black clouds of undead locusts moved through the sky like a storm…
"They're coming…" Sol said as she also noticed the presence of three large Insects from the walls and they seemed to be generals of the swarm of insects.
"No time to waste…" Shane muttered as he swiftly deployed his three Sentinel Mk-IV Automated Turrets!
Indeed, after being able to scavenge a lot of materials in the underground facility, Shane was able to produce a total of five Sentinel Mk-IV Automated Turret with the help of his Otherworldly Mechanic Title!
Whirrrrr—click!
The turrets activated and almost everyone in the group were quite shocked about the appearance of the Turrets.
"So this is why…" Shenlong, the monk who was always silent, couldn't help but comment after realizing why Shane was confident of dealing with the swarm of insects.
"No wonder you're so confident, Clan Leader." Tundra said as he didn't expect Shane to bring out three of those Turrets at once.
He knew how powerful these Turrets were and about their capability to bombard an area with incendiary bombs!
Soon, the barrels of the Turrets started rotating as they locked onto targets.
Immediately, a barrage of incendiary bombs and energy bullets rained down upon the swarm.
BOOM! BOOM! BOOM!
Explosions lit up from the sky as the fire engulfed thousands of undead locusts, scorching their brittle wings, and sending charred bodies crashing to the ground.
Thud… Thud… Thud…
However, the swarm was endless. After all, this Citadel seemed to be untouchable and no one should've raided it yet considering how the place didn't seem to be in a terrible condition. There were simply no signs of combat in the walls for a very long time…
"There's really a lot of them… Let's not hurry getting in." Shane said seeing that for every locust burned to ash or charred to death, dozens more took its place.
"Keep firing!" Shane ordered.
Lysandra and Vernon took position beside him as they used their rifles to deal with those larger insects.
BANG! BANG!
Each shot could easily pierce through the heads of the larger, mutated locusts, and with the same bullets, it would kill more undead locusts behind it.
Meanwhile, Sona raised her staff as she continued to cast her ice-related spells.
"Frozen Gale!"
After a long chant, Sona summoned a blizzard! Its frigid winds cut through the swarm, turning the undead insects into frozen statues that shattered upon impact to the ground!
Otto wasn't far behind. He also took some time to chant but as soon as he waved his hands, a dozen fireballs ignited in the air before him.
"Die!"
Each fireball hit its target, detonating in a powerful burst and reducing the undead locusts into molten bits of its previous body.
This time, the front liners were in a defensive position.
Standing in front of the mages, Kain the Werewolf guarded them from any insects that could reach their side. Well, Otto and Sona have terrible defenses. Even if they had various Talismans and Tokens to protect them, it was better to have Kain actively protect them.
"Haa!"
Whenever a stray locust got too close, his claws would rip through shells or bones with ease.
However, the battle was not getting easy as there were probably millions of insects rushing at them!
Thankfully, the slowest caster, the Necromancer or Zephyrion, had finally finished chanting…
"Arise, my servants."
At his command, skeletal warriors, ghouls, and specters emerged from the ground.
"Kill them!" He commanded.
Normally, these low-tier Undead Summons weren't that effective against most Zombies. However, their opponents right now were Insects so he knew that the quantity of undead summons would be better in this situation.
After all, the insects would have more targets and would lessen the pressure on many sides. Realizing this, Zephyrion summoned several dozens of them and as soon as he got tired, he would use the Spirit Stones that Shane had given to him.
Crash! Crash!
The undead army charged forward as they clashed with the massive insects… The battlefield was chaotic at this point!
Nonetheless, because of Shane's abilities and Cloud's constant report about the situation, he was able to observe the whole battlefield and he could assist in areas being suppressed by the swarm of insects.
He also didn't leave his position as he had to protect the three Automated Turrets.
Soon, Shane noticed that from the rear, Sol, the Spirit User or Ghostcaller, seemed to have just finished her summoning ritual.
"That's…" Shane couldn't help but feel impressed as soon as ethereal beings manifested around her.
"I'll be checking the inside of the Citadel," Sol said, wanting to see what kind of creatures they had to deal with and whether they had to kill something to stop the swarm of Insects.
"Go ahead…"
Soon, Shane saw the ghostly figures slipping through the battlefield, scouting the interior of the citadel beyond the walls!
During this time, Shane and the others just continued killing the swarm of insects blocking their vision. Then, after a few moments, Sol spoke up.
"The enemy is preparing something inside…" she warned. "More are coming. I need to get closer as the Spirits can't move too far from me."
Jafal, the Etherial Construct, stood beside her…
"Then we'll get a bit closer to the gate." His voice was calm yet firm. "I will guard you."

Meanwhile, Tundra grinned as he planted explosives on nearby stones. He did this for 20 or so stones before he felt that it was enough.
"Time to spread some love!" He hurled the bomb-laced rocks into the densest pockets of the swarm.
BOOM! BOOM! BOOM!
Just like that, the sky rained down with burning insect bodies…
Yet, the swarm refused to stop! There were just too many of them! They weren't even receiving messages that they had eliminated an Insect Zombie!
'These smaller insects must be part of the Zombie Lord or other mother-type Zombies…' Shane thought as he believed that only killing the one who had made these Insects would allow them to gain experience points and drop.
Nonetheless, Shane believed that they had a limit to producing these Insect Zombies. After all, it must be coming from their flesh or diet.
Sure enough, after a few moments, the intensity of the attack had lessened a lot!
It was the same time his three Turrets overheated.
"We should enter now…"
That was when Shenlong, the Legendary Monk, stepped forward.
His orange robes fluttered as he took a stance in front of the group. In just a few moments, his Aura erupted and the remaining Insects just dropped to the ground.
"Nice…" Shane nodded as he saw this simple move from the Monk.
Then, Shenlong moved as he saw another swarm coming from behind the walls of the citadel.
"Ha!"
Shenlong's palm struck the air and it created a powerful shockwave!
"Heaven's Reprisal!"
Boom!
This shockwave seemed to have formed a golden energy as it erupted outward, obliterating thousands of locusts in an instant.
As the dust settled, Shane clenched his fists…
"We've cleared the way. Now—" He pointed at the towering gates of Maggotfall Citadel.
"We breach the stronghold."
With the horde momentarily suppressed, Shane's group charged forward—

As Shane and his team unleashed their siege upon Maggotfall Citadel, three figures using binoculars were watching everything that was happening several miles away.

These three had identical faces like they were triplets. Their faces were eerily too similar—but that just showed they weren't ordinary Survivors.
Apparently, they were Travis' Clones.
They watched as the automated turrets rained incendiary rounds and energy bullets into the sky, igniting swarms of undead locusts.
There also seemed to be several magicians in his group!
One of the clones carrying a compact sniper rifle on his back, frowned.
"They're actually doing it… That lunatic Shane is really trying to crack open the Swarm Sovereign's nest. If they fail, the Swarm Sovereign will be able to send its locusts or insects to the continent. This is dangerous…"
