Chapter 43: You can rely on us

Steven reached out to help Cecilia up, but she politely pushed him away. He withdrew, a flash of disappointment flickering in his eyes.

But being the gentleman he was, he naturally did not insist further.

Then, he looked at the woman who suddenly appeared with a bit of surprise.

"Amy? Why are you back?"

Steven’s eyebrows relaxed for a moment while speaking.

Amy was a year older than him. They grew up together, and she was the person closest to him among their generation in the Lawrence family.

However, after she and her aunt Niki settled abroad ten years ago, they haven’t seen each other since then.

"I learned that Grandma was sick, so I came back to see her."

He didn’t reply.

Cecilia didn’t expect Steven, who was usually indifferent, to show such a relaxed expression.

It seemed that these two had a close relationship.

For some reason, she felt a bit uneasy in her heart.

Perhaps it was time for her to get some rest.

"Mr. Lawrence, Madam Marianne’s surgery was very successful. I’ll be going now."

Just as she was about to leave, she was stopped by Amy’s outstretched hand.

"Are you... Miss Morrison? I’m Amy Lawrence, and I’ve heard about you. Thank you for performing the surgery on Grandma."

‘Heard about me? Did Steven tell her something?’

A slight discomfort flashed through Cecilia’s mind. She did not like the feeling of being talked about behind her back.

She glanced at Steven and politely shook Amy’s hand.

"You’re welcome."

Steven noticed the hint of discomfort in Cecilia’s eyes. Remembering her role in Marianne’s surgery, he paused in thought.

"The promise I made to you, I’ll give you an answer as soon as possible."

Unexpectedly, his words seemed to annoy Cecilia even more.

Did he also discuss the issue of finding someone for her with Amy?

Ignoring Steven, she turned and left.

After returning, she collected her thoughts and dialed Bruce’s number.

"Do me a favor. Investigate Steven Lawrence’s son, as thoroughly as possible."

Before the surgery, she had found Alex strangely familiar, and it made her feel a bit uneasy. She had planned to meet him after the surgery, but since he had fallen asleep after crying for a while, she decided to just investigate first.

She had just hung up the call when the private detective called her.

"Miss Morrison, we’ve found the suspects’ whereabouts."

Cecilia was instantly excited. She grabbed her coat and prepared to head out.

Ever since Emma had given her the sketches of the three suspects last time, she had asked a private detective to investigate them. She didn’t expect them to be located so soon.

Hearing Cecilia’s movements, Emma woke up from her sleep.

"Mommy... where are you going?"

Cecilia gently patted the drowsy child in front of her, speaking softly.

"Mommy has found the people who hurt you last time. I need to deal with them, okay?"

Emma responded sweetly, "Okay!"

‘If Mommy catches the villains who hurt Brother, she will definitely teach them a good lesson!’

She thought, ‘I must tell this good news to Brother later...’

With this thought, she fell asleep again.

Cecilia planted a kiss on Emma’s face and hurried out of the door.

She followed the detective to where the three culprits were and found them. To her surprise, she discovered that they had already been beaten up black and blue, their faces bruised and swollen.

What happened here?

She walked closer and saw James Mitchell wiping blood off his hands in the shadows.

Seeing Cecilia, he smiled slightly. "Cecilia, you’re here."

She was a bit surprised.

"What’s... what’s going on here?"

At this moment, Elena came over with three ice creams in hand, smiling warmly.

"It’s nothing, Cecilia. When we heard that these people had kidnapped Emma, we decided to teach them a lesson."

She gave Cecilia an ice cream.

"Here, I heard young people like these."

In her daze, Cecilia took the ice cream.

"I could have done it myself."

As she was used to being independent and doing things on her own, Cecilia was a bit speechless.

James took the other ice cream from Elena, shaking his head.

"You have pretty hands. Don’t hurt them dealing with these matters."

Elena nodded in agreement.

"No matter what happens, you can rely on us."

Cecilia felt her eyes warming up slightly, noticing that Elena gently wiped a bit of cream from James’s lips.

They two exchanged a warm smile.

She had never been in such a scene her entire life.

From a young age, she had always known that Mariah was the one Frank truly loved. Her mother had never held his heart.

Naturally, he did not love her, either.

She had once dreamed of having a family like that, but despair eventually swallowed the dream. Later, she realized that she no longer needed it when she grow up.

However, those feelings seemed to waver again when she saw Elena and James.

Cecilia suppressed the sting in her nose and focused on eating her ice cream.

Once finished, the three walked away in the glow of the sunset, chatting and laughing.

"What about those three?"

"After getting beat up, they will be sent to the police station. Also, I’ve arranged a few things at the police station and made sure they will—"

"Hahaha!"

Returning to the hotel, even Emma noticed the happiness on Cecilia’s face.

She snuggled in her mother’s arms, feeling happy because Cecilia was happy.

Out of the blue, Cecilia’s phone rang and ruined the warm moment.

On the other end was Steven’s voice, with a barely detectable tremble.

"Cecilia, Grandma... she won’t wake up."
