Chapter 107: D- rank floor [1]

Brandon and Naevora walked through the D-rank floor, looking around for aberrants.

*THOOM*

A moment later, the undergrowth exploded, and two D-rank Aberrants burst forth from the foliage.

These weren’t like the twisted, malformed E-ranks that he had cut through earlier.

These were bigger. Their ether was more concentrated, pulsing off their bodies in thick, visible waves.

The first was a Leechbound Ravener, its black, glistening skin constantly moving like a slick of oil over bone.

Long, bladed arms dragged deep furrows into the earth as it walked on all fours, with a jagged, open ribcage.

The second was worse, a Cinder Howler, tall and humanoid in form and its head is skull wrapped in flickering flame.

Brandon’s eyes narrowed and Naevora who was standing beside her raised an eyebrow "These are more powerful than the D rank that you fought a week ago."

"Let’s see how you will do under pressure."

Brandon gripped the dagger in his hand tightly before stepping forward.

*swoosh* The Ravener dashed first, closing the gap with a burst of speed that nearly blurred its body.

Brandon sidestepped at the last moment as the beast’s clawed limbs tore into the space where he was standing a second ago.

He flipped back, but before he could counter, the Cinder Howler moved, its hand glowing as it launched a compressed flame burst straight at him.

Eh?

Boom!

Brandon leapt sideways as the explosion hit the floor, and he rolled through the dirt.

’They’re faster... and coordinating?’

The Ravener again lunged at him.

Brandon clenched his teeth... and struck back.

’Gravity Vortex.’

A sharp pulse of blue ether surged, and the square-shaped rune flared open below the Ravener mid-jump.

A second later—wham!

A dense gravitational field slammed down on the Aberrant’s body, pulling it to the ground with a loud crunch.

Its limbs trembled, unable to move as the weight of its own body doubled, then tripled, pinning it in place.

Brandon dashed in without hesitation, both daggers glowing with ether.

He slashed across its upper shoulder- shrrkk! -then plunged the second dagger into the exposed ribcage cavity and twisted it.

"GRAARCHKK!" The creature shrieked, and with a sudden heave, it broke the gravity field, rolling away violently and swinging its bladed limbs toward him.

Brandon leapt back, barely avoiding the swipe, but before he could steady himself... whoosh!

A column of flame struck him across the side.

’Shit...’ He cursed under his breath as the fire lashed across his jacket and seared his arm.

He dropped to one knee and clenched his teeth in pain as he looked at the other aberrant.

Brandon grunted and quickly stood up as the flames flickered around his jacket.

A blue glint passed through his eyes as he activated Gravity Vortex again, this time targeting the Cinder Howler.

Snap!

The blue rune flared beneath its feet, and the gravity field triggered.

But this one was tougher.

The Howler staggered, its knees buckling, but it didn’t collapse fully.

It raised a hand and pushed against the gravity with raw ether and its flames intensified, defying the suppression.

"Oh, you are resisting that... then resist this."

As he muttered, the glowing ether in his eyes turned red...

Naevora raised an eyebrow in surprise as she felt the ether pressure spike dramatically.

CRACK-THRUM!

The space around him cracked, and a jagged red chain burst from the distorted space.

The Cinder Howler raised its arm as flames coiled around its palm, ready to launch another burst... when the chain sliced through it.

SHUNK!

The chain carved a clean, searing arc through the creature’s torso, severing its right arm and part of its shoulder in an instant.

The Cinder Howler’s flame-head jerked backward as its body twisted and the fire in its skull sputtered from the shock of the blow.

"GGRAAAAAAGHHHHHH!!!"

Brandon stepped forward slowly as he firmly held the daggers in his hands.

The Howler wasn’t dead.

The stump of its severed arm flared, molten ether dripping like lava as it regrew a rudimentary limb of pure flame.

It staggered, the Gravity Vortex still partially active, forcing its movements to remain sluggish.

At the same time, the Ravener had recovered from the earlier assault.

"Grr..." It let out a warbling hiss and lunged again from behind Brandon, raising both of its scythe-like limbs.

Brandon sensed it.

Without turning, he activated the Gravity Vortex again.

BANG!

The blue rune lit up under the Ravener just before it landed.

Its entire body was slammed into the ground once more, the gravitational force cracking the earth beneath it.

Brandon twisted the dagger in his hand, and hurled the weapon down into the creature’s eye socket.

SHHNK!

"RAARGHHH!!" The Ravener screamed and tried to move but it was pinned, unable to fight back effectively under the crushing weight.

Brandon raised his hand and the dagger itself broke free from the eye socket and returned to his hand.

He then turned back to face the still-standing Howler.

The two locked eyes... or rather, Brandon stared into the flames that danced within the skeletal socket of the creature’s skull.

It raised its shaking hand.

A sphere of fire formed, more unstable than the last, crackling wildly.

"Again with the fireballs?" Brandon exhaled and ran forward.

He zig-zagged through the terrain, avoiding minor ether bursts from the Howler’s palm.

The Howler released the flame sphere...

...but Brandon slid beneath it, letting the projectile explode harmlessly behind him in a fiery burst.

Dirt and splinters rained down as he closed the gap.

He kicked off the ground, leapt onto the Howler’s knee, ran two steps up its chest, and jammed both daggers straight into its skull-flame.

SSHHHHKK!

The twin daggers stabbed into the core of its ether flame.

The moment his blades pierced it, the Howler’s entire body shuddered.

Its arms flailed, flames bursting from its mouth in a last, desperate screech.

"SHCRRRRAAARCCCHHHH!"

Brandon twisted the daggers outward, slicing through the flame and disrupting the core.

Then—

BOOOM.

The Howler exploded in a miniature burst of flame and pressure, hurling Brandon backward through the air.

He flipped midair and quickly landed on his feet.

And behind him, the Ravener, still pinned under the third Gravity Vortex, black blood leaking from its ruined face where the dagger had sunk deep.

He turned his head and the space around the Ravener creaked and three crimson chains appeared from it, tearing the Ravener to pieces.

Looking at the crumbling corpse, Brandon let out a sigh and at this time, Naevora walked to him.

She looked at him with a suspicious gaze "That skill... it was the one that belongs to the S-rank researcher, right?"

Hm? Brandon turned to look at her and nodded his head "Well, yeah..."

Hearing this, Naevora’s gaze squinted slightly "I didn’t know that you could absorb S-rank skills. Is it temporary?"

Brandon gave a nod and a deep sigh escaped her lips "Don’t use the skill so casually. If the government finds out that you copied an S rank skill..."

Brandon smiled and gave a nod "I know, I trust you... That’s why I used it in front of you."

Huh? Naevora was surprised for a second and then she embarrassingly rubbed her neck, looking away from him "Alright, alright... sheesh."

Looking at her getting flustered like this, Brandon chuckled in his heart.

She closed her eyes for a moment to regain her composure and saw him chuckling.

Her lips twitched in irritation and she reached to pinch his ear "You cheeky brat, don’t fluster me like that. You’re too young to be saying things like that with a straight face."

Getting his ear pulled, Brandon laughed even more "But what I said is true, Naevora... I truly trust you."

Naevora blinked, her fingers loosening just a little.

She stared at him, and her expression softened... just slightly.

She let go of his ear at last and turned her face away, coughing a little to hide her embarrassment.

Seeing this, Brandon was quite amused. Even though she has a carefree personality with that cocky attitude, she is flustered when he is honest.

She looked at him and muttered "Let’s continue... you need to kill some more."
