Genesis Code: The Genetic Awakening-Chapter 67: Brewing Storm (2)
Chapter 67: Brewing Storm (2)
Captain Helena moved in too fast and too furious. Had she taken her time to observe closely, she would have noticed the trap laid for her.
"Got you!"
The cloaked figure turned around at that moment, the only visible part being their lips that extended into a vicious grin. With a simple hand seal, the figure cast an explosive spell he had at the ready.
’Shit!’ Captain Helena cursed, swiftly conjuring her defence spell. Unfortunately for her, she wasn’t fast enough and took the brunt of the explosion.
BOOM...!!!
"Ah...!" The captain was blown away, sent flying off the roof and into solid ground. "Ugh!"
The woman winced through gritted teeth, her vision becoming blurry. As she attempted to get up, another groan escaped her bloody lips.
Blood leaked from the cuts on her head, arms and mid-section. The captain took heavy damage. She had gone in sword blazing, but was a little too impatient and came out bathed in blood.
"Fucking hell..." Captain Helena grumbled. "A few bones are definitely broken." The woman lay on her back, taking in heavy breaths as the distance explosions and screams echoed throughout the city.
Through sheer effort and willpower, Captain Helena got back to her feet. Her gaze went to the roof, unwillingness within her eyes. She knew those suspects were long gone by now.
With no choice left, she retrieved her communication artefact.
"Commander, I have a report..."
.......
"Noted." Commander Lance, personal guard to the king nodded. "Don’t neglect your wounds and find treatment. Your comrades will handle the rest."
"Yes, sir." Captain Helena’s voice echoed from the communicator.
’Whoever these people are, they sure are ready to throw their lives away.’ The commander’s eyes narrowed. ’Even then, none of this makes sense. How is this going to hurt the king in any way?’
Of course, there was the political aspect of the king failing to protect the very heart of the kingdom from the hands of enemy forces.
But the commander knew the king enough to know he wouldn’t be shaken by this. Whatever happened, he knew the king would pull through.
’Or maybe there could be more to this than meets the eye.’ The commander rushed towards the king’s side while issuing orders to his men through his communicator.
"Your majesty!" The commander called as soon as he reached the king’s location. "We have an issue!"
King Gray was also issuing instructions to the guards and knights of the Royal Palace. More than anything, he wanted to go check on his family, especially his daughter.
Unfortunately, he couldn’t be absent in the midst of a crisis. Furthermore, he had plans of going down the city himself.
"Hm?" The king turned around seeing his trusted commander running to his side. "What is it? Did you find out something?" The men he was instructing gave small bows before rushing to carry out his instructions.
"It’s not far from what we guessed." Commander Lance nodded. "The issue is the people carrying out this chaos. They’re suicidal."
"That means capturing them would only harm us instead." The king frowned, not liking it one bit.
"Exactly." The commander nodded. "Wha—" The commander was about to ask a follow when a knight barged into the hall, calling for the king.
"Your majesty!" The knight called out, running towards the duo.
However, the commander noticed something off. In times of crisis and important events, there was a rule that all knights and guards had their helms removed.
Maybe the knight might have forgotten due to the chaos going around. However, everyone else around already had theirs removed. He couldn’t have possibly missed that, and neither would the others fail to remind him.
’Something’s wrong.’ The commander narrowed his eyes at the coming knight, moving to step before the king.
His actions alerted the king as well, prompting him to take another look at the knight. For a moment, he didn’t know what got his commander guarded.
Breaking into the Royal Palace was a mighty task on its own without the proper channels. The defence and assault formations would fry any who attempted to infiltrate.
However, the king soon noticed what the issue was, causing him to raise his guard a notch higher. It could still be forgetfulness after all, and no alarms went off to indicate someone was able to break in.
"Halt!" Commander Lance barked, his coldness in his tone not leaving any room for refusal.
However, the approaching knight didn’t seem to hear him, and his covered face made it difficult to discern his facial features.
"I said halt!" The commander bellowed, drawing his sword. His mana flared around him, causing the very air to tremble.
Even if he was one of their own, ignoring orders from a superior was not something they took lightly.
Instead of halting, the knight redoubled his efforts, channelling his mana to close the distance faster. Clearly, this was an attempt at eliminating the king!
"Shit!" The commander cursed, turning to look at the king. "Move back!" Using his free hand, he pushed the king back and then conjured a barrier in front of his sword.
Under normal circumstances, doing what he did would be considered subversion, but his oath was to protect the king at all costs.
The king—being flung backwards—didn’t mind as his attention was on the knight who was already close to the commander.
’Those fucking traitors!’ King Gray growled in outrage. ’They’re willing to go this far, and for what?!’
Naturally, he knew most of the nobility saw themselves as above all else, caring little for the normal people. They only served their own interest and would go to any length for it.
Even if it was the king in the way, they would not hesitate. After all, a new one could be put on the throne. They had the power to remove a king should his actions harm the interest of the people.
Unfortunately, King Gray was different. There was almost no shred of evil in him. He was ruthless when he needed to be, hard on his enemies. But aside from that, there was nothing they could use against him.
"For your hubris." The knight suddenly whispered, arriving right before the barrier as his body began to glow a fiery red, blinding everyone.
The commander attempted to back away, but he had underestimated how fast the explosion occurred.
BOOM...!!!
