Genesis Code: The Genetic Awakening-Chapter 129: For My Friends (2)
Chapter 129: For My Friends (2)
"Hehe,"
David chuckled while wiping the blood from his nose. He lifted his head to look at Jess, who gazed down at him with a frown.
"I have to admit, you’re very strong for a beast." He revealed a bloody grin, staring defiantly at Jess. "But this will be the last mistake you’ll ever make."
"Tough talk from someone struggling to get on their feet." Jess snorted, slowly approaching the count. "One way or another, you’ll be paying for your sins."
"Oh, I beg to differ, sweetheart." The count shook his head, shedding every trace of fear he once showed. "I didn’t want to do this because of the loss I’d take, but... You leave me no choice."
Jess wasn’t sure what the count was talking about. Taking his words as the final ones of a doomed man, she got in close.
However, the catwoman caught sight of something. The study trembled for a moment as glowing magic runes suddenly appeared on all four walls, the floor and the ceiling.
"What the hell are you doing?"
Jess asked, turning her attention to the count. Her eyes widened slightly when one of the rings on the count’s fingers glowed in sync with the colours of the runic circles.
"Hehe, goodbye."
David’s grin grew as a protective ward covered his body while the glow from the runes reached a crescendo. The count was willing to lose everything in his study to get rid of Jess.
This was not a favourable action as he would indeed be losing a lot of important documents and a portion of his manor, but if this was the price for his life, then so be it!
Surprisingly, the catwoman showed no panicked reaction as the count expected. She just stood there and looked condescendingly at the Count.
’The hell...’
BOOM...!!!
.......
BOOM...!!!
"What was that?!"
The guards and knights on patrol heard the ground-shaking explosion. In fact, everyone within the manor grounds heard the explosion, waking any and all persons.
"Oh, no! It came from the count’s study!"
The count’s men rushed to the site of the explosion. The blast had obliterated the study and the surrounding rooms. The unfortunate souls who were close by lost their lives from the resulting flames, shockwaves and shrapnel.
"Spread out and find the Count!"
The men scurried about as they searched through the burning debris for signs of the count. Suddenly, a loud, piercing cry rang out from the side as the wife and children of the count rushed to the scene, intending to jump into the flames.
"Noo...! David."
"Ma’am, you can’t rush in there!" Some of the knights acted fast, catching the wife and kids before they did anything stupid.
"No, let me go!"
The wife screamed at the top of her lungs, tears streaming down her face. She fought the knights with the ferocity of a mad woman. Unfortunately for her, the knights were stronger.
"David...!"
BOOM...!!!
Another explosion came from outside the manor, catching everyone’s attention. The leading knights knew this was some kind of attack.
A command from the knight in charge sent many knights rushing outside the manor to investigate.
"What now?" The commander growled in frustration.
Mists began to gather within the flames as they quickly spread to cover the ground completely. The intense flames and heat began dying out following the appearance of the mists. It was an unexpected but welcome phenomenon.
However, as the mists continued to expand, covering everything within a 50-meter radius, the knight in charge knew this was some kind of attack, most likely from the person or persons who caused the explosion.
"Get them out of here!"
The knight commander ordered the count’s family to be taken away, instructing the others to prepare for battle.
Judging by the size of the mist, the knight commander suspected multiple assailants were behind the explosion and likely held the count hostage or worse.
Silence fell over the manor as the knights stood vigilantly, their eyes darting around in search of the suspected assailants. They were slowly losing vision, but that was not very important.
However, they soon realised their senses were being hindered within the mist, and they could barely sense two meters ahead of them.
"Commander!"
"I know!"
The commander replied through gritted teeth, analysing the nature of the mist. Passing his sword to his left hand, the commander gathered his mana into his palm and conjured a gale that he directed forward.
Whoosh!
The gale tore through the mist with ease. But as quickly as the grey mist parted, they were refilled, rendering the spell useless.
’Tsk! Let’s see how it handles this!’
His sword vanished in a flare of mana as the commander brought both hands together and flung them in an X, generating another gale, this one more powerful than the last.
Unfortunately for the commander, the spell was still useless.
"Don’t bother."
A sudden feminine voice echoed across the space. It came from all directions, making identifying the location it came impossible.
"Show yourself!" The commander roared, retrieving his sword while taking a stance. "You have no idea who you’re messing with!"
"Is that right..." The voice came again, snapping the knights’ heads around. "Your master should have known not to mess with me."
"Argh...!"
"Count!"
The knights called out in desperation as the sound of the count’s cry of pain reverberated all around them. With no idea where the cry came from, they were helpless.
Whoosh!
The commander made another attempt at clearing the mist, but the results were still the same. Desperation and frustration burned in the hearts of the knights as they wondered what to do.
"Spread out and find them!"
Left with no choice, the commander issued his orders. They couldn’t see or sense far, but that shouldn’t be a problem – hopefully.
Crack!
"Argh...!"
The scream came a second time, sending cold shivers down the spine of the knights. Should they fail to protect the Count from the assailants, it would be their heads on the line.
"Commander, we can’t see anything!"
"Commander, there’s no end to this mist!"
"Commander, leaping out is not an option!"
"Commander! ... Commander! ... Commander! ..."
The knights continued to seek their leader’s call, not sure what to do about the situation. Regardless of what spell they tried or attempts made to leave the mist, they couldn’t find their way out.
"What do you want?!"
The commander finally made the decision to engage the assailant(s) in conversation, hoping it would delay whatever they intended to do.
"I’m sure whatever it is, the count can sort you out, if you let him go!"
"I only need one thing from this bastard... And that is to pay for the crimes of going after me and my friends."
"Argh...!"
Another cry echoed once more, making the knights grit their teeth in anger. The feeling of helplessness stung at their pride more than they could admit.
An eerie silence returned to the space once more, lasting for several seconds. However, things began to change when the mist started receding.
"Ready!"
The commander ordered, and all the knights turned towards the direction from which the mist was receding. Their weapons were drawn, and their mana flared in preparation for the inevitable fight.
Vision returned a second later. However, the eyes of every knight widened in horror at the sight that greeted them after.
