Chapter 3 – Daily Quest

The dawn came slowly to the slums, sunlight pushing weakly through a haze of smoke and dust. The alleyways reeked of spoiled food, rotting plastic, and the lingering scent of rust. For most who lived here, morning brought only hunger and despair.

But for Rai Ichiro, today carried something else.

He sat on the edge of his bed, staring at his hands. They still remembered the feel of the jagged scrap blade, the warmth of garbage energy coursing into his veins, and the sparks of his first kill. The memory replayed over and over in his mind—bloodless but alive, metal rat dissolving into dust, the window declaring his victory.

The system’s voice echoed in his skull even now-

[ New Passive Skill Unlocked – Rust Absorption ]

Every letter was engraved inside him. He clenched his fists, his lips curling into the faintest smile. For the first time in years, Rai felt like he wasn’t just drifting through the world as trash. He had direction. He had power.

He looked over at Yuki. She was still asleep, her breathing shallow, her skin pale. Every cough that escaped her fragile body was a knife stabbing him from within.

“Just wait, Yuki,” Rai whispered. “I’ll change everything. I’ll give you the life you deserve.”

A soft chime answered him-

[ Daily Quest Reset - Collect 10 Units of Garbage ]

[Reward - +50 EXP, Small Recovery Potion]

[Failure - Random Penalty]

Rai’s eyes sharpened. “Another quest... then let’s do it.”

He slipped out into the streets. The slums were awake now—merchants shouting half-heartedly, children with hollow eyes digging for scraps, drunks passed out in corners. People barely looked at him. To them, Rai Ichiro was invisible, a failure from the academy, a boy fated to nothing.

But today, he carried a secret.

One that made his steps firmer, his chest lighter.

He began his task. Every broken can, every shattered bottle, every rusted piece of wire vanished in soft pulses of light when he touched them. Garbage energy flowed into him, cleaner and sharper than any food he had eaten.

By the time he reached the tenth, the familiar chime rang.

[ Quest Complete! ]

Rai blinked, and suddenly a glass vial appeared in his hand—crude, but filled with glowing liquid. He almost dropped it.

“...This system creates items too?”

His heart pounded as he stared at the vial. If this was real, then maybe... maybe he could heal Yuki’s illness one day. His jaw clenched. He tucked the potion into his pocket.

But inside, something stirred. A hunger.

It wasn’t enough.

Fifty experience, a single potion—he wanted more. Needed more.

His eyes narrowed toward the edge of the slums. There was a place there—a small dumping yard no one dared to go near. The stench was unbearable, the piles endless.

If trash was his weapon... then that place was a goldmine.

The yard lay behind bent metal gates, its walls stained with decades of filth. The ground was layered with mountains of waste—broken furniture, twisted steel beams, bags of rotting food, heaps of rusting electronics. Flies buzzed thick in the air, the smell strong enough to choke a man.

Rai stood there, his heart racing.

“This is it.”

The system seemed to respond to his intent, glowing faintly-

[ Large Source of Garbage Energy Detected ]

A grin spread across Rai’s face.

“Absorb.”

The ground pulsed. Light erupted.

One by one, piles of filth began dissolving. Rotten wood splintered into dust, rusted nails turned to ash, broken circuits melted into sparks of green light. Waves of energy surged into Rai’s body, each stronger than the last. His vision blurred, his blood roared.

The power was intoxicating. Rai’s body trembled, his muscles tightening, bones groaning as if reforged from within. Sweat rolled down his face, his eyes blazing with light.

He staggered, gasping, but he didn’t stop. The hunger inside him screamed louder, demanding more. The piles of trash shrank around him, entire mountains dissolving into thin air, until the once filthy yard became a barren ground of cracked dirt and empty air.

Finally, the glow faded.

Rai collapsed to one knee, panting. His entire body burned as though every cell had been reforged. But inside him...

Strength.

Energy.

Power beyond anything he had imagined.

The system screen unfolded, brighter than ever.

Rai’s eyes widened. He clenched his fists, his arms trembling with the surge of newfound strength.

“...Level twelve. Just like that.”

He laughed, breathless, the sound sharp and wild in the empty yard.

All his life, people had called him trash. Useless. Weak. And yet, in less than a day, he had surpassed them, climbed higher than they could imagine.

He rose slowly, gripping his scrap blade. The weapon felt lighter now, as if it belonged to him truly. 𝑓𝑟𝑒𝘦𝓌𝑒𝑏𝑛𝑜𝘷𝑒𝘭.𝒸𝘰𝑚

The system chimed again-

[ Hidden Reward - Skill – Rust Punch ]

Description - Condense garbage energy into your fist and unleash a corrosive strike. Effective against trash beasts and armored enemies.

A glow wrapped around his right hand for a moment, faint sparks dancing along his knuckles. Rai flexed his fingers, feeling the power coil within.

“...This is only the beginning.”

But before he could savor the victory, a sudden screech echoed from the far side of the yard. Rai stiffened, eyes snapping toward the sound.

The air shimmered. From the shadows of the remaining piles, something massive rose.

A creature made of discarded tires, bent pipes, and shattered glass. Its head was a television screen cracked down the middle, its limbs thick and jagged, its eyes glowing red behind shattered glass.

[ Warning - Lv.8 Trash Golem Detected ]

Rai’s grip tightened. Sweat broke across his forehead.

“...So this is my real test.”

The golem roared, the sound of grinding metal shaking the ground.

Rai lifted his blade, garbage energy pulsing through his veins, and smiled faintly.

“Come.”

The fight had only just begun.
