Chapter 159: The Ambush In The Dark

WHOOSH!!!!

The sound of violently displaced air echoed through the dense canopy. Hitachi moved his gaze around the forest, his glowing Celestial Eyes tracking the distortions in the ambient energy. They were fixed on the dark figures moving deep inside the treeline with inhuman speed. Moreover... they were all moving on all fours, their limbs contorted at unnatural, sickening angles.

"What do you see, Hitachi?" Rose asked, her knuckles turning white as she gripped her wooden staff, moving her anxious gaze all over the place.

"Are they monsters?" Austin added.

"Impossible, we aren’t yet in the monster zone, we can’t encounter any monster in this region." Sofia shook her head, moving her sharp gaze all over the place.

The territorial borders established by Galaxy Fall were absolute; human domains were strictly cordoned off from monster spawn zones.

WHOOSH!!

A shadow detached itself from the gloom overhead. Yakima raised her head to the tree top on her right, seeing a dark figure hanging on the tree, holding its trunk with two hands and legs like a massive, corrupted insect, its hollow gaze fixed entirely on them.

"Is that?" She was speechless, her mind failing to process the biology of the creature.

"They are... Humans?" Hitachi was dumbfounded, his Celestial Eyes piercing the darkness to reveal the twisted, corrupted spirit energy pathways of what used to be ordinary people.

WHOOSH!!

The figure leaped off the tree, the sheer force of its jump cracking the bark, and landed twenty meters in front of Yakima, crouching low on all fours like a spider ready to strike.

"...?!"

Yakima and the group were stunned, their defensive formations faltering as they watched as more of the mutated humans landed silently all around them, easily surrounding the expeditionary force.

"What are these things?!!" Aurelia yelled, panic edging into her voice. She tapped the crystal face of her Galaxy bracelet, initiating a rapid system scan, planning on scanning them for combat information.

[ERROR!]

"....?!"

She froze, the blood draining from her face. The galaxy fall system had never failed to identify an entity before. To return an error meant these creatures existed entirely outside the recognized laws of their reality.

"Hehehehehe."

A deep, eerily distorted voice sounded all over the place, seemingly coming from both sides of the forest simultaneously. The spatial magic carrying the voice made it impossible to pinpoint the source. Yakima jumped down off her horse, drawing her heavy, enchanted blade, staring at the ten creatures standing before the group. She then looked over her shoulder, seeing more standing on both sides of the forest, even hanging upside down on trees. In a simpler form, they were utterly outnumbered.

"Show yourself!! Leader to Leader!!!" She yelled, projecting her voice with spirit energy, moving her gaze all over the place to spot the puppeteer.

"Leader to Leader?" 𝕗𝚛𝚎𝚎𝐰𝗲𝗯𝗻𝚘𝚟𝚎𝗹.𝕔𝐨𝕞

The voice sounded again, dripping with a bit of heavy, mocking sarcasm:

"You aren’t the Leader of this group... Let the one in that carriage come out and I will speak."

"....?!!"

Yakima and everyone was stunned. Yakima was the revered Guild Master of the Dragon Tooth, an elite powerhouse, and also the officially proclaimed leader of this vital military mission. And now... the hidden enemy just casually said she isn’t the leader, or, more accurately, it didn’t see her as worthy of being one.

"I am telling you!! I am the leader!!" Yakima yelled, her pride violently wounded. The golden Aura of a Lv300 All-bloodlines burst out from her in a blinding wave, spreading all over the place. The sheer atmospheric pressure of her high-level stats pressed down, even pushing some of the mutated creatures back into the brush.

"You think I am scared of that?" The voice scoffed, entirely unimpressed by her display of power.

WHOOSH!!!

Out of nowhere, a heavy, black-iron spear coated in a swirling energy shot towards Yakima with the force of a ballista bolt.

"Hmph! Underestimating me!" Yakima sneered, her battle instincts taking over. She drew out her blade entirely, and sent a massive, crescent-shaped energy slash, filled to the brim with her concentrated spirit energy, towards the incoming attack.

BOOM!!

The collision echoed like thunder, but the result defied all logic. The black spear effortlessly shattered her high-level attack into a shower of harmless sparks, not even slowing down its lethal momentum.

"This?"

Yakima’s eyes widened in sheer disbelief. Her ultimate defense had been broken like glass. She violently moved out of the way, and the Spear shot past her, leaving a trail of displaced air, and smashed brutally into the reinforced side of the royal carriage, plunging itself deep inside the cabin.

".....?!!!"

".....?!!!!!!"

"....!!"

Everyone outside froze in absolute horror and shock, their breath caught in their throats, staring at the spear, which the whole half, which was 2 meters long had entered the carriage where the Empire’s most valuable assets were resting.

"Oh no, Princess Delphine!!" Yakima yelled in terror, visualizing the diplomatic fallout of the royal heir being impaled under her watch.

"You see... As the Leader, you can’t even block such a weak attack! Aren’t you useless." The Voice sounded again, clearly disappointed by the Dragon Empire’s supposed elite vanguard.

"You bastard---" Yakima roared, her humiliation turning into blinding rage as she prepared to activate her soul eyes.

"---Who woke me up from my sleep?"

".....?!"

Yakima froze completely stiff, hearing the cold, incredibly irritated voice right behind her.

The next moment, the black-iron spear that had pierced the carriage violently vibrated before it completely shattered into fine, metallic dust, dissolved by an overwhelming, invisible pressure. And then, the carriage door slowly opened.

Everyone instinctively took a step back from the suffocating, almost physical killing intent emanating from the carriage. Even Hitachi, Rose, Aurelia, and Austin moved back in primal fear. The air grew instantly freezing.

"You are finally out!!" The hidden voice sounded again, a hint of triumphant glee in its tone.

Mirabella stepped out, her expression a mask of pure, unadulterated annoyance. She hadn’t even drawn a weapon. She moved her cold blue gaze around, taking in the mutated ambushers, and simply stretched forth her bare hand to the distance:

"I don’t like playing such games." She stated, her voice devoid of any emotion.

She slowly, deliberately clenched her fist.

Instantly, a catastrophic wave of pure, condensed spirit energy spread all over the place. There was no explosion, no flashy elemental magic—just the absolute erasure of matter. The system couldn’t even register the damage numbers before shattering all the mutated creatures into a fine mist of blood, and paste.

The terrifying energy wave kept on moving all over the forest, expanding with relentless speed, covering hundreds of meters in an instant, leveling ancient trees and silencing the woods completely. The entire ambush force was wiped from existence in a fraction of a second.

"Bring him to me."

With her simple, absolute command, Cupcake drew in a massive breath, her small form expanding slightly, and shot like a white bolt of lightning into the Forest at the right.

"....?!"

Yakima and everyone stood paralyzed, watching the gruesome remains of the unidentifiable creatures soaking into the dirt, then slowly turned their terrified gazes at Mirabella, finally wondering who truly is the monster in this scenario.

BOOOOM!!!

A figure flew violently out from the shadows of the forest, breaking through branches, and smashed heavily onto the dirt path right in front of the stunned group. He was a scrawny human dressed in a tattered, dark mage robe, with blood flowing freely from the deep, ragged claw marks on his chest.

"You?! Don’t come any closer!!" The man yelled in absolute, mind-breaking horror, desperately crawling back from the forest treeline, as Cupcake casually walked out from it. She shrunk back to the size of a harmless domestic cat, walked elegantly towards her master, and jumped back up to rest comfortably on her shoulder, licking a drop of blood from her paw.

"Wait, you’re the one speaking all this while?" Yakima asked in deep confusion, her brain short-circuiting as she cast a basic appraisal skill, not expecting a common Lv200 Mage will actually dare to challenge her, let alone possess the power to shatter her ultimate attack.
