Chapter 396: Chapter 335: Reunion

"What do we do about that female?"

"Just let her get away? How are we going to explain this to our superiors?"

"Forget it. Let’s fall back and report the situation. That female is a dead woman walking anyway. There’s no point in risking our lives for her."

The spire-shaped building pierced the clouds, its point like a colossal beast’s fang ready to rip a hole in the sky. From a distance, the experimental base resembled a black, steel behemoth crouching on the ground, exuding an intimidating aura that warned all to keep away.

Sang Luo hid in a deserted, dark corner. One hand was pressed to her chest as she panted heavily. She was in bad shape.

The long run had left her legs feeling weak. An ache throbbed in her nose and teeth, as if they were about to start bleeding. She took a few deep breaths and looked down at the virtual map projected from her wrist. A golden dot marked the target location: inside the base just ahead.

A special magnetic field inside the base was causing interference, making it impossible for her to use her Space Jumping Talent Ability.

Seizing the brief one-minute window as two squads changed shifts, Sang Luo reached the building’s back door and had her wristband start decoding the password.

1%... 2%... 3%... 20%...45%...78%...

The seconds ticked by.

The closer it got to completion, the more time the decryption took.

Sang Luo’s heart hammered in her chest, and sweat beaded on her forehead.

"Who’s there?"

The CRACK of a gunshot split the air.

The nearby Insect Clan guards rushed over, but the doorway was empty. There was no sign of anyone.

’Strange. Did we see things?’

"You lot, search the area thoroughly! The base’s confidential information must not be leaked!"

"And bring in another unit. Tighten security. Watch out for any contaminated, mutated species trying to sneak in."

"Yes, sir!"

...

In the nick of time, Sang Luo used Space Jumping to teleport to the edge of a pool of water. She had already scanned the area with her spiritual power and confirmed there were no members of the Insect Clan nearby, which she found strange.

Sang Luo was too exhausted to think about it. Her face was deathly pale as she staggered a few steps toward the water’s edge, intending to clean her wounds.

She had already used her Talent Ability three times today, its daily limit. She would have to wait until tomorrow to make another move.

’At least I’ve successfully infiltrated the Insect Nest,’ she thought. ’I can take my time investigating those bases now.’

The night was cold and still. The pool was rippleless.

A thin mist slowly began to dissipate.

As Sang Luo reached the edge of the pool, a tall man materialized a short distance away.

Her pupils contracted. ’I clearly scanned this area with my spiritual power! There was no one here! How could someone just appear so silently?’

’Is it one of the Insect Clan soldiers who was chasing me?’

She whirled around to run, but a sharp pain in her leg nearly sent her sprawling to the ground.

The man instantly teleported to her side and grabbed her arm. "...Luoluo?"

His voice held an indefinable note of tension and uncertainty.

Sang Luo’s hand, reaching for the gun at her waist, froze. She looked up at the man before her. ’That tone of voice... I’ve only ever heard my Beast Husbands call me like that.’

The man’s voice was clear and low. ’It sounds so familiar... It’s like...’

"Anu?"

Sang Luo stared at him, stunned. The man had choppy, silver-gray hair, a sharp and severe profile, a prominent brow, and ochre-gray eyes. His features were completed by a high-bridged nose and thin lips.

He was tall and statuesque, with a cold, imposing aura, like a newly drawn blade.

Even in his Insect Clan humanoid form, his compelling, handsome features were apparent.

"It’s me, Luoluo. It’s been a long time." He nodded, and his form slowly shifted, changing back into the familiar, golden-eyed, black-haired youth she remembered.

Anubia gazed intently at Sang Luo, as if lost in a beautiful dream from which he never wanted to wake. He took a step forward, closing the distance between them, and could faintly hear her quickened breaths and racing heart.

Anubia lowered his head, gently cupping Sang Luo’s face in his hands. It was warm. Soft. Real. Only then could he be certain. ’Luoluo really is here, right in front of me.’

He pulled her into a tight embrace, his voice thick with profound longing and a choked sob. "Luoluo, I never thought I’d see you again. I’m... I’m so happy."

"Me too. Seeing you’re all right, I can finally rest easy." Sang Luo gave him a faint, weak smile.

Anubia, who had been overwhelmed with joy, now noticed how pale she looked. His gaze fell on her current Insect Clan disguise, and he frowned, his voice deepening. "Luoluo, you don’t have to pretend in front of me. Change back."

"Inside the Insect Nest, this Insect Clan identity is more advantageous for my mission. If my real identity is discovered, it will be very troublesome."

"I’m here now. Don’t be afraid. Whatever you want to do, I’ll help you." Anubia’s voice softened. Moonlight washed over his face, gentling his features and making his golden eyes seem pale and clear.

Sang Luo had infiltrated the Insect Nest alone, and her mind had been on high alert the entire time. Now, meeting someone she knew—a trustworthy Beast Husband who had once risked his life for her—her frayed nerves finally began to unwind. She nodded, switched off her wristband’s disguise function, and reverted to her true form.

Anubia’s heart trembled, but when he saw her injuries clearly, his expression instantly darkened.

The hands and legs of the Insect Clan were insectoid, like limbs of steel, and some were even covered in hard scales, making injuries difficult to spot. Once Sang Luo reverted to her original form, however, her wounds were laid bare.

Her exposed arms were covered in red scrapes, but the worst injury was the bullet wound in her right calf. She had dodged quickly enough that the bullet hadn’t hit anything vital, but the surrounding flesh was a mangled, bloody mess.

It was a miracle she had been able to grit her teeth and endure for so long!

Anubia’s heart ached for her. He swept her up into his arms and strode away.

Sang Luo rested her right hand on his chest. "Where are you taking me?" she asked nervously.

"To my residence, to treat your injuries."

"It’s nothing serious. The bullet didn’t hit any nerves, it’s just a flesh wound. I brought ointment and antiseptic. I just need to clean it."

"...You need to rest and recover properly!" Anubia’s expression was grim, his lips drawn into a tight line.

"No! There are soldiers after me. Put me down!"

He said nothing, continuing on without breaking stride.

No matter how much Sang Luo pleaded, Anubia refused to loosen his grip.

Sang Luo had expected Anubia to take a secluded path, but to her surprise, he strode right onto the main avenue leading back to the city.

They passed many Insect Clan guards along the way.

When the guards saw Anubia, they simply offered a respectful greeting. Even seeing the unfamiliar, differently-featured female in his arms, not one of them dared to say a word.

The lower-ranking members of the Insect Clan didn’t even dare look up at him. They all knelt on the ground, only rising after he had passed.

’Anu’s status in the Insect Clan seems to be very high...’

’If he’s willing to help me, this will be much easier.’

Anubia carried Sang Luo through a long corridor and into a magnificent palace, where he laid her on a bed. An attending medical officer arrived swiftly. After a full examination, the officer declared that she was not in any major danger. Her injuries simply required rest to heal, and he left a prescription along with some instructions.

After listening to the report, Anubia dismissed everyone.

He took off his gray jacket, draping it casually over the side of the bed. Sitting on the edge of the mattress, he picked up the medicinal ointment and began to apply it to Sang Luo’s wounds himself.
