Chapter 40: The erasure of Dr. Colburn had begun

Somehow Bobbie’s presence felt toxic. Turning her head just in time, she saw Bobbie Sue quickly tucking her phone into her pocket. The woman had been seconds away from capturing a photo of the fallen, infertile Dr. Colburn!

Brianna gripped the back of the sofa to stay upright. "Get out of my house, Mother."

"Why? I came here to be polite. I was going to ask you to forget that ridiculous debt Reyna owes you. Family shouldn’t sue family. That’s tacky. But seeing you like this... I suppose you aren’t in a forgiving mood."

"No. I’m not."

"Well," Bobbie smoothened her skirt with a mocking satisfaction. "Then Reyna has my full consent to keep speaking. She’s gone public, Bri-Bri. The internet has already crowdfunded the money to pay you back. People are paying her thousands just to show up at parties and tell the ’truth’ about your bullying."

Truth? Was she living in a world of delusion?

Brianna shifted her weight on her good ankle, cause the air was becoming heavy.

"You should be grateful your sister is turning your scandal into something productive. Every insult thrown at you is a dollar in her pocket. It’s a shame; the more you suffer, the richer she gets. You’re practically her biggest benefactor now."

’Huh, so Reyna was the one spreading those lies about me.’

Brianna remained indifferent. Her twin sister and mother were comfortable being the reason she was being harassed and teared down by the public?

"Is that all?"

Bobbie’s smile faltered. "Is that all? Brianna, did you hear me? Your sister is making a fortune off your reputation!"

Brianna finally met Bobbie’s gaze with a terrifying hollow calm. "I heard you. You’ve traded your daughter’s dignity for a few thousand dollars and a spotlight at parties. I hope the money keeps you warm when you finally realize you sold the wrong daughter."

It was simply an observation of a failure!

Dropping her eyes to Bobbie’s new designer heels, "But I suppose I shouldn’t be surprised. When people who share your face give the world permission to hate you, the world never hesitates. It’s very efficient of you."

Bobbie gave her daughter a meaningful look. Things wouldn’t have resolved to this if Brianna hadn’t been so stingy and shared her wealth equally between the family!

Afterall, she sacrificed so much birthing her. Her waistline, her ’down there’. It was only right that the daughter came back and compensated her for her wasted beauty years. But no, this one would rather spend the money on a useless man.

Brianna had always been a wicked spoiled brat! She had everything growing up because Alexander Blythe was spellbound by his genius daughter. He looked at Brianna’s genius as if she were a "Phoenix descending from the Heavens," a once-in-a-century talent that made everyone else in the family look like common sparrows.

He had showered her with everything, convinced that she was the only one worthy of the Blythe legacy.

And what had Brianna done with all that "favor"?

She had ruined it. She had become so "virtuous" and "independent" that she had cut the lifeline. Because of Brianna’s falling out with her father and her "righteous" career, the child support goldmine had dried up.

Then she ended up marrying a scum husband? If Bobbie Sue had known Brianna would turn out to be such a worthless investment, she would have reached for the abortion pills decades ago.

This was her reasoning and therefore it justifies her actions!

Refusing to wait for Bobbie Sue to finish her self-justifying monologue, Brianna waved a dismissive hand. "Annie, I believe Miss Sue has forgotten how to use a handle. Assist her. If she finds the transition to the sidewalk difficult, the estate security can provide a swifter exit."

"Yes, Madam. Right this way, Miss Sue." Annie motioned the woman to the door, but she slapped her hands away.

"Don’t touch me! I know where the door is." Bobbie snapped, turning to look at her limping daughter.

This was another failed reason soft parenting doesn’t work!

"Brianna, you’re throwing your mother out of your home? In this state? No farewell money, no farewell gift, nothing?!" Bobbie scoffed, snatching her designer bag from the table. "Fine. Go ahead. Sit here in your empty palace and be useless. While you’re walking around like a lame pack mule, your sister is preparing for a show!"

Brianna stopped for a second, rolling her eyes. "And why do I care what Reyna is doing?"

Bobbie stepped closer. "Oh, you stupid child. Because she has an exclusive interview with Marcus Thorne."

Brianna froze. Marcus Thorne?

Anyone in her position knew that a single hour on Thorne’s stage was enough to rewrite history!

Despite her own fame, she had never been granted an audience with the man; and yet, Reyna, who had nothing but a fake reputation, had somehow bypassed her. It didn’t make sense!

"By this evening, the whole country will know what a cold, heartless bully you are. He’s going to help her tell the ’truth’ about how you stole her life with all your supposed lies."

Brianna’s heart skipped a beat. With his platform, she wouldn’t just be a rumoured "sham" or a "vampire" in the eyes of the public—it’ll be her reality.

Still, Brianna remained unperturbed on the surface. "I hope Marcus Thorne’s cameras are high-definition enough to catch the sweat on Reyna’s upper lip when she lies. It would be a shame for all that effort to go to waste."

Bobbie didn’t say anything more as she swayed her hips to the door. "Watch the news tonight, Bri-Bri. Watch your sister make better use of her face and her fame than you ever did. At least she knows how to treat people who matter."

Brianna watched her mother’s retreating back. The question "What did I ever do to you?" choking her, but she swallowed it down like broken glass. She wouldn’t give Bobbie the satisfaction of a plea.

Instead, she just looked at her hands. They were shaking. The erasure of Dr. Colburn had begun.

She needed to make a few calls.
