Chapter 219: Chapter 210: Someone

Central Base.

After seeing the message Gu Xi sent back, Li Ming fell silent. The rhythmic tapping of his fingers on the armrest of his wheelchair paused for a moment.

The man sitting across from him frowned slightly. "What did Xiaoxi say?"

Li Ming glanced up at him, deactivated the privacy mode, and projected the Light Screen in front of him.

After reading it, the man was silent for a long while before speaking. "Vice-captain, all these years... maybe we really have been wrong."

It had been sixty years since the apocalypse began. Having endured the zombie scourge and frequent natural disasters, humanity had survived the most difficult early days. Now, they were slowly trying to reclaim their former homes.

Although many had fallen into despair during this process, even more were fighting to rebuild their homeland.

And once, their Doomsday Squad had fought on the front lines.

Back then, Xiaoxi had shouldered the hopes of all humanity.

But ever since Xiaoxi’s sudden disappearance all those years ago... everyone on the team had changed.

Including him, and including Li Ming.

To save Xiaoxi, they had been willing to gamble the entire world. But back then, the person who had sacrificed the most for this world was also Xiaoxi.

Now, she was offering her own blood as bait. She had clearly figured something out.

’Knowing Xiaoxi’s personality, she’ll definitely take all the blame for what we’ve done upon herself...’

But Xiaoxi had already shouldered too much for this world. Neither he nor Li Ming wanted her to continue carrying burdens that were never hers to begin with.

The man let out a silent sigh.

Li Ming was quiet for a long moment before looking at the man opposite him, a rare ruthlessness in his eyes. "That batch of mutants must be dealt with as soon as possible. You go to City A personally. Don’t give the Chens a chance to speak."

’Xiaoxi wants to go fishing.’

’She wants to catch them all in one net, cut through the mess, and resolve these troubles as quickly as possible.’

’But the Gu Family is behind the Chen sisters...’

’I can’t let Xiaoxi follow the trail.’

’Because some things should stay buried in the darkness, never to see the light of day.’

After the man left, Li Ming sat silently in his wheelchair for a long while. In the end, he didn’t reply to Gu Xi’s message. Instead, he found Ye Junhan’s contact and sent him a message:

"Watch her. Don’t let her do anything reckless."

The Chen sisters had always been fanatical pursuers of eternal life. Now, with their own life force depleted and their time running out, they were on the brink of madness. Once they got their hands on Gu Xi’s blood and had a taste, some things would be impossible to hide.

’But why should his sister have to bear the burden of that filth?’

’Why?!’

’They’re not worthy!’

After receiving Li Ming’s message, Ye Junhan instinctively glanced toward Gu Xi, who was sitting by a distant campfire. She was looking down at her personal terminal, seemingly waiting for something.

Ye Junhan guessed she was waiting for Li Ming’s reply.

But... Ye Junhan looked away, staring at the message from Li Ming. After a moment, he replied, "I can’t control her."

Soon, another message arrived from Li Ming: "Then watch the outsiders. Don’t let them find a chance to get near her."

Ye Junhan’s hand dropped to stroke the scabbard at his waist. He walked toward the campfire at the edge of the camp and stopped beside Gu Xi, watching her in silence.

Gu Xi looked up, her gaze meeting Ye Junhan’s dark eyes. She had a good idea why he was here—it probably had to do with the fact that Li Ming, once again, had not replied.

So she stood up and led Ye Junhan away from the group.

"Tsk," Qi Xiang clicked her tongue, turning her head to watch their retreating figures with a thoughtful expression.

"What are you tsking about?" Wei Heng asked, looking at her with a helpless expression. His gaze swept over the two retreating figures, hiding the complex emotions in his heart.

Qi Xiang pulled her gaze back and turned to Wei Heng, propping her chin on her hand. "What do you think? A lone man and woman, sneaking away from the group for a private rendezvous late at night in the middle of nowhere..."

"..." Wei Heng couldn’t stand her dramatic tone. He said flatly, "If you want to know something, you can ask Gu Xi yourself when she gets back." ’Stop trying to get it out of me. How would I know what Mr. Ye is thinking?’

Qi Xiang just smiled, looking at him without saying a word.

Wei Heng: "..."

Meanwhile, Gu Xi led Ye Junhan most of the way around the factory before stopping in front of a small hill. "What did you want to talk to me about?"

Ye Junhan looked down at her and got straight to the point. "Shen Yue provided the address for this factory. But someone doesn’t want you involved in this matter."

’Someone?’

’Does he mean Li Ming?’

Gu Xi raised an eyebrow. She’d already had her suspicions based on how slowly Li Ming had been replying to her messages recently.

But she couldn’t understand why Li Ming wouldn’t want her involved.

Was it just because he was involved too?

Gu Xi’s intuition told her that wasn’t it. She understood Li Ming, just as... Li Ming understood her.

Ye Junhan glanced at her, opened his personal terminal, and displayed his conversation with Li Ming for her to see.

Gu Xi gave him a surprised look before tilting her head to read the messages on his Light Screen.

There was more than one page of messages. After finishing the current page, Gu Xi instinctively looked up at the man beside her.

It wasn’t her own personal terminal, so she couldn’t operate it.

But Ye Junhan just stood there with his hands at his sides, showing no intention of turning the page.

Gu Xi: ’What’s the meaning of this? Is he only going to show me the last page?’

She looked up at him and offered a subtle reminder. "I’ve finished this page."

Ye Junhan gave a soft "mm," and then... closed the message interface.

Gu Xi: "...?!"

’Was my reminder too subtle?’

’Okay, my fault.’

After a moment’s thought, Gu Xi decided to be more direct.

"I finished that page, but I’d like to see the rest," she said, tapping his personal terminal with her hand. "May I?"

"You may," Ye Junhan nodded. He opened the Light Screen again, but this time he displayed his contact code. He looked up at her. "But this is too much trouble. Let’s just share messages. It’ll be more convenient."

Gu Xi thought for a moment. That worked. She opened her own personal terminal, scanned his contact code, added him, then opened the chat window and sent a request to share message permissions.

Ye Junhan’s gaze fell on a certain spot on her Light Screen. Farming Team...

When the request wasn’t approved after a moment, Gu Xi turned to him with a frown. "?"

Ye Junhan pulled his gaze away. With a slight movement of his fingertips, he proactively shared all of his private communications, then looked up at her.

Gu Xi: ’That’s... really not necessary.’

She took the initiative to adjust the sharing permissions for both of them, choosing to view only the messages from Li Ming.

She was reading for a long time. The messages from Li Ming revealed a great deal.

Gu Xi silently read about the shocking events and heavy burdens hidden between the lines, while Ye Junhan stood guard beside her, also in silence.

After a long while, Gu Xi looked up at Ye Junhan and said, "Thank you."

Ye Junhan dropped his hands and stood up straight. He looked at Gu Xi and saw that her expression was relatively calm, and for a moment, he didn’t know what to say.

Other than offer his silent presence.

Gu Xi lowered her head and began typing quickly on the Light Screen.

’There were some things she had to ask about, once and for all.’

Ye Junhan glanced over. The message was for Li Ming, sent while the sharing mode with him was still active.

He gave her a look, then proactively exited the message sharing mode and closed his Light Screen. He didn’t leave, however, and continued to stand silently by her side.
