Chapter 978: Chapter 978: Making up a Story_1
The man fell silent for a moment, his expression subtle, as if he was both irritated and disappointed.
Eventually, he compromised, perhaps hoping to act in a better situation; being hasty could rob some of the fun.
"Alright, what do you want to talk about?" he asked.
...Talk about what?
Jane McCain had no idea; she just wanted to stall for time.
"It’s about something that happened a long time ago. I hope... after you know it, you won’t be too shocked or too angry..." As Jane said this, she walked over to the coffee machine, using the act of making coffee to conceal her nervousness.
The man frowned and said, "Janie, I love you. No matter what you’ve done, I’ll forgive you."
He thought that Jane wanted to reveal her past love life.
Jane turned around, brought the coffee to him, and sat opposite him, keeping a certain distance.
"I...I want to talk to you about some of my ex-boyfriends..."
"Janie." The man leaned forward, taking Jane’s hand, "I don’t care about those. As long as we love each other now, whatever happened before is not important."
"What if they’re all dead?" Jane withdrew her hand and said in a low voice, looking down, "If they’re all dead, would you still think it’s unimportant?"
"Dead?" The man’s brow furrowed deeply, surprise showing in his eyes.
"Yes." Jane nodded slightly, "Every time I fall in love with a man, he ends up dying an unnatural death."
The man chuckled: "Janie, that’s superstition; I’m not going to die."
He stood up and continued, "Baby, you’re too tired. Go take a bath first, and we can talk more later."
He was still intent on coaxing Jane into the bathroom.
"No!" Jane clenched her fists tightly, digging her nails into her flesh to keep from losing control, "I want you to listen until the end, then decide whether to continue being with me!"
The man was helpless, his impatience showing through his resignation, "Alright, alright..."
He sat back down.
Jane slowly exhaled.
"You know, because of my mother, I was exposed to many models from a young age..." Jane began speaking slowly, "The modeling industry is chaotic, filled with precocious boys and girls. Thirteen or fourteen-year-olds can look like adults and date like them too.
When I was sixteen, I met a male model named Philly. He was mixed-race, very tall, and handsome, one of my mother’s favorite models. I was captivated by him at the time, and we fell in love... freёnovelkiss-com
You’ve lived abroad, so you must know that in France, girls can marry as soon as they turn 15. So, I suggested going to France to register for marriage, but he didn’t want to.
I was very angry at the time and had a big fight with him. He apologized and begged for my forgiveness; it turned out he was only 14 years old, not even of marriageable age!"
"14 years old?! You fell in love with a 14-year-old boy?" the man exclaimed.
Jane said, "He really didn’t seem 14; I thought he was at least 20!"
She sighed softly, noticing the untouched coffee in the cup, and reminded him, "Aren’t you drinking?"
The man picked up the coffee and took a sip.
"How does it taste?" Jane asked, "My mother taught me the secret. You have to use water at 90 degrees temperature to brew the coffee – not a degree more, not a degree less."
"Hmm... it tastes good, slightly bitter," the man said, then took a few more sips.
"Well, coffee is naturally bitter..." Jane opened a sugar box on the table and added a sugar cube to his cup.
"Go on," urged the man, "What happened after that with the 14-year-old boy?"
Jane’s hands were clasped together, slowly caressing the dampness at the center of her palms as her frantic heart eerily calmed down...
