"Brother Ying, what are you doing? Why don't you go back and rest?"

In the middle of the night, Zhou Hao, who got up to go to the bathroom, saw that the light was still on in the second-floor office. He poked his head in and saw Chen Ying sitting in front of the computer typing on the keyboard.

"It's nothing, just checking some materials. You go back to bed."

Zhou Hao returned to his room, where Benzi was still playing with his phone. He gave him a look, "What are you thinking about? Having life-changing thoughts over a toilet trip?"

"I was just thinking about Brother Ying."

"What? Who are you thinking about?" Luo Ben got startled and immediately sat upright. "Haosi, don't get breathless when you talk."

"What's on your mind? I'm just thinking about Brother Ying. He's got the skills, and I heard his mentor is pretty amazing too. Why would he choose to hole up in the mountains? With his abilities, if he opened a pet hospital in a big city, he'd have a set of house keys within two or three years, easy."

Luo Ben scoffed and lay back down, "He has aspirations, not like us ordinary mortals."

Zhou Hao glanced at him and said no more.

The next morning, after breakfast, Chen Ying instructed Little Sen to keep a closer watch on the station as he needed to go down the mountain to take care of some business in the center.

"Didn't you have plans to go into the mountains? Will you make it back in time if you go now?"

"No problem. Mainly, I need to get some documents from the technical equipment department."

He didn't have time to explain further and rode off on his scooter down the mountain.

Xiao Song held his bowl and glanced at Little Sen, then at Yin Li, and timidly asked, "Yesterday Brother Ying said to let Little Golden Cat get some exercise, so should I bring it out after giving it its medication?"

Little Sen didn't dare to decide on his own and looked at Xiao Song, then at Duanmu, and finally turned to Yin Li.

Yin Li looked back, confused, "You two figure it out. Why are you looking at me? I don't understand your veterinarian stuff."

Zhou Hao, having nothing else to do, volunteered to take on the chores of washing dishes and sweeping the floor.

After cleaning up, Zhou Hao used the excuse that he had promised Brother Duanmu to clean the medical area the day before, grabbed a basin and a rag, and ran to the back.

Luo Ben glanced at him and curled his lips, then went back to his room with a classmate to gather materials for their thesis.

Zhou Hao earnestly helped Duanmu clean up and, seeing no other chores needed his attention, approached to inquire how he could get a job at the Rescue Station.

Duanmu was slightly surprised.

"All three of you should be graduating next year, right? Isn't your teacher arranging something for you?"

"The two of them will probably continue with their PhDs, but I want to work for a while before I think about a doctoral degree. I think the atmosphere here at the Rescue Station is good, and the conditions are not bad, so I wanted to ask Brother Duanmu for some advice and prepare in advance."

Duanmu's way into the Rescue Station wasn't very common.

But he liked Zhou Hao's kind of proactive young man, someone with initiative and clarity about what he wants, without being overly scheming. So, he gestured for Zhou Hao to come closer and whispered a few tips into his ear.

"Ask Brother Ying. And also, build a good relationship with Dr. Gao who's leading you guys. Brother Ying's Forest Cabin emergency observation station will definitely need an ornithology expert to stay on duty. If you can handle working in the forest for long periods, then show off a bit more in front of Brother Ying. Although he can't directly keep you, he can recommend you stay, understand?"

Zhou Hao understood instantly, nodded vigorously, and ran to refill Duanmu's water cup.

"Brother Duanmu, I got it. I'll go work on my thesis now. Just call me if there's anything you need help with."

Once Zhou Hao left, Little Sen walked in, sat down, and took a drink of water.

"You think he's good?"

"Not bad, the young man is energetic and insightful. Brother Ying will definitely be looking for a helper, and with his tactics, he'll have no problem managing Zhou Hao."

Little Sen was silent for a while before asking softly, "Why would Brother Ying want to manage Zhou Hao?"

Duanmu gave him a look, not bothered to explain.

Chen Ying made it back to the Rescue Station by 10:30 in the morning with another car following behind him.

"Ali, help me out, entertain Brother Cao for a bit while I change clothes then head up the mountain."

Chen Ying didn't have time to talk to anyone else; she grabbed her bag and went back to her room to change her equipment.

At that howl, Master Zhao, accompanied by Little Deng, also started changing into their forest trekking gear.

They were about to do a forest patrol and would be passing by the Forest Cabin, so they could join forces, and incidentally help clear the path.

In the forests, wild grasses grew wildly; if left untrodden for some time, thorn bushes would become a blockade across the path.

Little Deng checked the long-handled sickle and made sure to bring along the rescue rope as well.

He and Master Zhao had to take a path that had not been walked for over half a year; taking that route would lead them directly to Changgou Village.

"Little Deng, someone anonymously reported yesterday that there are people setting traps in the mountains near Changgou Village again, so pay extra attention on your way," Master Yi reminded them as he poked his head out of the office.

He continued, "Also the Forest Patrol Officer from Changgou Village said he found signs of illegal fishing by the ditch. He's tried to catch them several times without success, so you guys keep an eye out for fish poaching down by the ditch."

In the summer the rain increased and so did the fish in the ditches, drawing some people to wild fish in the mountains.

Fishing isn't a problem, but the conservation area doesn't allow random fishing, plus, who knows if you're catching endangered fish species or not.

Every summer they had to wage a battle of wits with rule-breaking fishermen, and apart from sighing, there was little to do but strengthen patrols.

Before heading into the mountains, Chen Ying made a special trip to grumble to Mendun'er.

"Mendun'er, you'd better listen to me, okay? I'm applying for a mate for you today, but whether or not it'll work out has to be judged by experts. If it doesn't work, I promise to find you a place with more male bears."

Upon hearing this, Mendun'er was thrilled and even blew Chen Ying a kiss!

"Ying, make sure it's a beauty— I don't like flat-faced bears!"

Chen Ying raised an eyebrow: I have reason to believe you're criticizing our Prince Fei!

(Giant panda cub)

Prince Fei: What have I done to you? Just wait till I've grown up, and I'll charm the socks off you!

Chen Ying, quite familiar with Mendun'er's preference for good looks, made a clear promise to choose a beautiful female bear for it, so they could have a pretty baby.

Mendun'er, reassured by Chen Ying's heartfelt promise, started happily nibbling on its paws.

Having calmed the somewhat anxious Mendun'er, Chen Ying, along with Designer Cao and his assistant, followed Master Zhao into the mountains.

The mountain trail was tricky, and Designer Cao, being a city dweller, was breathless after an hour, unable to maintain his composure, he collapsed onto a large rock to catch his breath.

Master Zhao had a heavy workload today and didn't wait for them. He made arrangements with Chen Ying to forge ahead and clear the path before continuing forward.

"Dr. Chen, building a light steel villa here seems a bit over budget, don't you think? Have you considered reconstructing with logs?"

"The conservation area doesn't allow tree felling, and transporting economical wood from outside costs about as much as a light steel villa."

Most importantly, their small building had three floors. Constructing it purely out of wood would be highly skill-intensive and take much longer. When considering the cost-effectiveness, customized construction made more sense.

After the group finished collecting data and descended from the mountain, Designer Cao and his assistant looked as if they had tumbled through the mountains for a day.

Just before they were due to descend, Designer Cao approached Chen Ying.

"Your work is really arduous. I never realized it before, but even following this short distance today was tough. Your willingness to stay in the deep mountains year-round for animal rescue is truly noble, really."

"I personally would like to sponsor your emergency station project. Should I go to the Forestry Bureau to make a targeted donation, or how does it work?"

Chen Ying was taken aback by Designer Cao's desire to donate, momentarily at a loss.

But quickly, she gently declined his kind offer.

"If you truly wish to contribute to animal protection, consider donating to the Rescue station. There, many animals have been cured of injuries or disease but can't return to the wild or be displayed in zoos. They need that love even more than I do."

Without saying anything more, Designer Cao gave Chen Ying a thumbs-up and descended the mountain that same night.

He said he would create the design plans as quickly as possible, to get the project underway soon.
