Chapter 340: Chapter 339: Uncle, I’m very familiar with that man

Nia Mitchell swallowed, her hand trembling a little as she pushed open the Grand Gate to Maxwell Peary’s Office Room.

In the quiet Office Room, Maxwell Peary sat upright on the sofa, not moving nor making eye contact as she walked in.

Her apprehension grew, and she turned to close the Grand Gate.

After closing it, she took slow, careful steps toward him, stopping a meter away.

Then, silence swallowed the room.

A deathly silence permeated the entire Office Room, and Nia Mitchell’s heart hammered in her chest.

Why isn’t he speaking? Why isn’t he speaking?? Why isn’t he speaking??? Those words swirled in Nia Mitchell’s mind. She felt like an ant on a hot pan, restless with the urge to move and dispel her anxiety. But I dare not!

"Um... Mr. Peary?"

After a long pause, Nia Mitchell finally spoke, breaking the silence.

But Maxwell Peary remained seated there, unmoving, not even glancing her way.

"Mr. Peary, if you have something to say, please say it. I’ve been here for quite a while. You... you mustn’t delay my work. Otherwise, the loss will be... yours."

Nia Mitchell closed her eyes, wanting to rush through her words. But she wasn’t as composed as she’d hoped; her voice trembled slightly.

After she finished speaking and still heard no response, Nia Mitchell cautiously opened one eye to gauge the situation.

Who knew that the first thing her open eye would see was the CEO looking at her meaningfully.

Nia Mitchell’s eyes flew open! She met Maxwell Peary’s gaze, flustered, then quickly looked away after just two seconds.

"You... why are you staring at me?"

Maxwell Peary was still frowning, his gaze seeming to rest on her, yet not truly seeing her. His gaze seemed to pierce through her, as if trying to see into her very soul, to understand her completely. 𝐟𝕣𝕖𝐞𝐰𝕖𝚋𝐧𝗼𝚟𝐞𝕝.𝗰𝐨𝐦

"Do you know Edbert?"

After what felt like an eternity, Maxwell Peary finally spoke, his first words since Nia Mitchell had entered.

Nia Mitchell was surprised. Huh? What does the CEO want to say?

Why do I feel like I can’t keep up with his topic?

"Y-yes... I do."

She couldn’t fathom the meaning behind his question, so she could only answer honestly and try to assess the situation.

"Are you close?"

Maxwell Peary raised an eyebrow and shifted his position on the sofa. His question, however, set alarm bells clanging in Nia Mitchell’s mind. Such a dangerous tone.

"Yes... yes... we’re somewhat acquainted."

Choosing her words with utmost care, Nia Mitchell instinctively took a step back.

"So, that means you are close."

Maxwell Peary concluded authoritatively, leaving Nia Mitchell no room to retreat.

"Er, alright then. We’re close."

Since Maxwell Peary had put it that way, she had no choice but to admit it. Her connection with Edbert was indeed quite strong; otherwise, she wouldn’t have made that phone call in front of Rose Eastwood.

That phone call?

Ah, I get it! Maxwell Peary must have arrived at the Office Room early and overheard my call.

Alright, I admit it. Now that I’m an MC Group employee, I shouldn’t be contacting my former boss while in the Office Room. It creates a bad impression, and there’s even a risk of leaking confidential information.

However, Rabina Mitchell, slow on the uptake, hadn’t realized at all that her concerns about this incident and what the CEO actually cared about were fundamentally different.

Maxwell Peary’s expression darkened further. Damn that Rabina Mitchell! To think she’d admit her connection with Edbert right in front of me!
