Chapter 1920 - Hostilities

Feng Wuji quickly regained control over his emotions and said, “But although others might never interact with Heaven’s Chosen, you’re different.”

He gazed intently at Su Yi. “You’ve never been to the God Domain, but even the lofty, superior gods know of your existence."

“Of course, most want nothing more than to see you dead.” Feng Wuji’s expression shifted. “When the Path of Divinity reappears, you’d best be careful. The gods... will not tolerate you living long enough to achieve divinity!”

With that, he rose and left.

Su Yi couldn’t help but laugh dryly and whispered, “Sure, my enemies amongst the gods won't tolerate my existence, but do you think I’ll tolerate their existence?”

......

Seven days later.

Su Yi returned to the Academy of Eternal Night. There, he saw Xi Ning!

“What are you doing here? Didn’t I say I’d run into something too trivial to even be worth mentioning?” laughed Su Yi.

It was already late at night. The moon was bright, and the stars were sparse. The pines and bamboo swayed in the wind.

Xi Ning stood beneath the eaves, bathed in lamplight. Her tall, slender figure cast an elongated shadow on the ground. She was still clad in plain hemp, but this did nothing to disguise her extraordinary figure and disposition, nor did it hide a face so brilliantly beautiful that the moon paled by comparison.

“So I’m only allowed to visit you when something’s gone wrong?” said Xi Ning, batting her eyes with uncharacteristic naughtiness.

Su Yi laughed. “You’re allowed to visit whenever you like, of course.”

He took out a jug of wine and passed it to Xi Ning. Then, he casually sat on the stone steps and relaxed.

Xi Ning thought for a moment, then sat down as well, resting her head in her hands as he gazed at the distant night sky. “Feng Wuji didn’t hurt you, did he?”

“Him...?” Su Yi laughed. “I suspect he’ll be too afraid to try me again before becoming a god.”

Xi Ning’s starry eyes lit up, and she glanced at Su Yi out of the corner of her eye. She immediately realized that Feng Wuji had suffered a crushing defeat at Su Yi’s hands!

Knowing that, she couldn’t be bothered to discuss the matter any further. Instead, she changed the subject and told Su Yi about their encounter with the mysterious spearwoman in the Place Abandoned by Heaven.

Su Yi was unwittingly stunned. He couldn’t help but look a bit dazed.

The mysterious spearwoman and A’Cai left for the Immortal Realm shortly before he did, but he hadn’t heard any news from them since arriving here. He wouldn’t have thought he’d next hear about the spearwoman from Xi Ning.

“Does she have a grudge against you?” Xi Ning couldn’t help but ask.

“Not really.” Su Yi shook his head. “We fought twice in the Human Realm, and I beat her, albeit barely, both times. That’s all.”

Xi Ning was flabbergasted. “You won? But I’m certain that she’s a goddess, and an extraordinarily powerful one too. How could you have defeated her while still a cultivator of the Human Realm?”

“A goddess?” Su Yi was stunned. “Her?”

Xi Ning could tell that Su Yi had no idea of the spearwoman’s true strength, so she recounted everything that had happened in the Place Abandoned by Heaven.

When Su Yi learned that the spearwoman had saved Xi Ning at a critical juncture, he was unwittingly stunned. That woman’s true strength is that impressive? That’s simply unreasonable!

Xi Ning said, “The spearwoman went out of her way to ask about you. She wanted me to contact you, and she said she was looking for a fight.”

“....” Su Yi didn’t know what to say. She really is petty. She’s still nursing a grudge over her defeat?

“Are you sure she’s a goddess?” Su Yi couldn’t help but ask. It just didn’t feel real. “Gods aren’t supposed to be capable of descending into the Immortal Realm. Aren’t the Laws of the Natural Order supposed to stop all that?”

“I don’t know how she managed to appear in the Immortal Realm, but I can say with certainty that she’s a goddess, and not an ordinary one, either!” Xi Ning said solemnly. “My clan has deities overseeing things, and in the God Domain, I’ve seen numerous other gods myself. I’m completely certain that the spearwoman is a goddess.

“That aside, she had in her possession an incomparably precious divine treasure, the Threelives God Mirror. She even tried to use it to divine my secrets.”

Su Yi couldn’t help but be curious. “Did you discover anything?”

Xi Ning shook her head. “No. Even she was astonished, and she suspects that someone has long since arranged my destiny.”

Su Yi’s eyebrows rose. “Might you explain in further detail?”

Xi Ning then described the encounter in full detail. After hearing the full story, even Su Yi was unwittingly stunned. The Threelives God Mirror could actually display a section of the River of Destiny? And the spearwoman suspects that whoever arranged Xi Ning’s destiny is an existence who transcended the River of Destiny?

Su Yi found it hard to stay calm after this revelation. That spearwoman really is no ordinary person! Never mind the rest. She used the Threelives God Mirror to display a corner of the River of Destiny. That proves that her origins are beyond imagination!

“At the time, Luo Tiandu and I were searching for some of the secrets of the Spirit Martial Epoch. We would never have guessed that we’d encounter such a mysterious existence,” said Xi Ning. “She told us that not even the gods could glean any insight into the Spirit Martial Epoch, and she urged us to leave sooner rather than later.”

Su Yi couldn’t help but recall his own experiences in the Cave of Divine Tears and what the lady divine wraith had told him about the Esteemed Demon God.

“So, you’re investigating the Spirit Martial Epoch too,” said Su Yi. “What for?”

“We’re gathering medicines to prepare for achieving divinity, and we’re gathering Undying Materials,” said Xi NIng.

Gathering medicines useful for achieving divinity made sense. They’d come in handy when it came time to break through.

And Undying Materials had to refer to treasures like Undying Demon Gold!

Su Yi said as much, and Xi Ning instantly confirmed his guess.

“Everything about the Spirit Martial Epoch has vanished from the River of Epochs as thoroughly as if someone deliberately erased it. Even the gods just know that a few ruins of the former epoch still exist in the Immortal Realm,” Xi Ning patiently explained. “Several of the other divine children who’ve descended into the Immortal Realm have come in part to explore these ancient ruins.”

Su Yi rubbed his forehead. “The situation really just keeps getting more and more complicated.”

XI Ning said gently, “Actually, you needn’t concern yourself with all that. It all happened a long, long time ago.”

Su Yi smiled and nodded. “When I get the chance, I’ll take a trip to the Place Abandoned by Heaven too. I’d like to meet the spearwoman, and while I’m at it, I can investigate the secrets of the Spirit Martial Epoch.”

Xi Ning’s gaze focused. “Aren’t you afraid she’ll pummel you?”

Su Yi couldn’t help but laugh. “Relax. She might be tyrannical, but her pride is bone-deep. When we fight, she always suppresses her cultivation base down to my level.”

Xi Ning instantly understood. Ah, so that’s how she lost to him twice!

The two of them chatted a while longer. When they finished their jug of wine, Xi Ning rose. “It’s time I got going. If anything happens, use the talisman to contact me.”

Su Yi rose, too. “I’ll see you off.”

Xi Ning didn’t refuse.

The two of them walked shoulder-to-shoulder beneath the night sky. When they reached the edge of the Academy of Eternal Night, Xi Ning turned to look at Su Yi. “Fellow Daoist, what will you think if it turns out that a karmic thread really exists between us?”

Su Yi thought for a moment, then said, “If it really exists, we’ll face it together, be it good fortune or disaster.”

Xi Ning’s lustrous lips curved into a smile. “I feel the same way. Alright then, this is far enough. I’ll be on my way.”

She turned and left, her jade-like hands behind her back and her hemp clothing dancing in the wind. Her steps were light and airy, and beneath the gentle light of the moon, she was ethereally beautiful.

Su Yi could tell that she was in a good mood.

He couldn’t help but smile. He wasn’t sure why, but every time he and Xi Ning interacted, he felt happy, relaxed, and at ease. There was also a sort of tacit understanding between them.

He’d never experienced this before.

A moment later, Su Yi recalled something and added, “Right, next time you come, tell Luo Tiandu not to hide. I promise not to beat him to death.”

His voice traveled into the distance.

Luo Tiandu, who’d only just emerged from his hiding spot to reconvene with Xi Ning, instantly glowered. “Do you really think I hid because I’m afraid of you? You’re wrong! I refrained from making things hard on you purely out of consideration for A’Ning!”

Su Yi thought nothing of it. He just laughed and waved. “Take good care of Xi Ning. You’re welcome to come kill me whenever you want. It’s fine if you can’t beat me. I’ll still treat you to a drink.”

“....” Luo Tiandu. He was about to object when he saw that Xi Ning was walking away, so he forced the words back down and hurried after her.

“A’Ning, after what he just said, I would have attacked without the slightest politeness if not for you!” said Luo Tiandu. He was obviously nursing a grudge.

“Fellow Daoist Su defeated even Feng Wuji. If you really want to bring suffering upon yourself, you’re welcome to try it. You don’t need to worry about my feelings at all,” Xi Ning said distractedly. “All I can guarantee is that Fellow Daoist Su really won’t beat you to death; he said he wouldn’t, and there’s no way he’ll go back on his word.”

“....” Luo Tiandu didn't know what to say.

......

The night was dark and deep.

When Su Yi returned to his residence in the Academy of Eternal Night, he saw someone waiting there for him.

It was Lin Feng!

“Disciple Lin Feng greets you, Master!” Lin Feng approached and bowed. His expression was somewhat reserved, with an unconcealed hint of excitement and respect.

When Su Yi returned to the Academy of Eternal Night, he brought Ning Xiu’s soul body with him. In doing so, he shattered any remaining reservations Lin Feng had about him.

“How is Ning Xiu doing?” Su Yi asked gently.

“Master, Second Senior Apprentice Sister’s soul is extremely weak. Fortunately, although she’s in a comatose state, she’ll be fine once she’s had some time to recover.”

“Good.” Su Yi nodded. “When she reawakens, ask her who did this to her and what role Feng Wuji played in it all. Report to me once you’ve got answers.”

“Yes, Master!” Lin Feng said solemnly.

“You and Ning Xiu can just stay in the Academy of Eternal Night and focus on your cultivation for now,” said Su Yi.

He was just about to return to his quarters when Liu Yun and Li Xiehu rushed over and said hurriedly, “Sovereign Venerate, we just received word that the Nine Great Demon Races of the Beyond have joined forces and marched upon our borders. The Nine Gates of Heaven are under attack!”
