Fire Chief vs. Surgeon: A Tale of Relentless Pursuit-Chapter 693: Someone Got Hit
Turning grief and anger into strength?
Just don’t take it out on the workers when the time comes, it would be too unjust.
....
Of course, Miss Li, who had already left, wouldn’t know any of this.
She had already gotten into a cab bound for the hospital:
"Driver, to Nanxi University Affiliated Hospital."
"Sure, please fasten your seatbelt, ma’am."
The taxi made good time, the midday traffic was light,
The road was clear all the way, reaching in just over ten minutes.
"Bang!"
Li Wu got out of the taxi, her first time visiting Nanxi University.
Even the out-patient building in front of her was impressively grand.
"Jing’er works here? Not bad at all!"
She entered the hospital like a high-ranking official inspecting the premises, then asked her way to the outpatient hall.
"Hello, could you tell me where the orthopedic outpatient office is?"
"Room 132, third from last on the left."
"Eh, got it, got it, thank you, beautiful."
.....
Li Wu reached the outside of the outpatient office to find a line already formed, five or six people waiting.
She didn’t barge in but quietly took a seat outside and started to fiddle with her phone.
She hadn’t been playing for long when a commotion suddenly burst out nearby.
Li Wu looked up just in time to hear a shriek:
"They’re hitting someone!"
Hitting someone?
Damn it!
Li Wu shoved her phone in her pocket; her first instinct was to rush into the adjacent office.
The assailant was now outside room 132, wielding a baseball bat and a fruit knife; no one around dared to intervene.
Jing’er was still pregnant; she couldn’t afford even the slightest mishap!
"Jing’er, Jing’er!"
A patient was still inside the office, too shocked to react.
But Lu Jing was quick on the uptake and stood up to close the door.
Little did she know, Li Wu barged in.
"Xiao Wu?"
"Jing’er, outside..."
"I heard, close the door first."
"Okay!"
Just as they were about to shut the door, they saw a three- or four-year-old girl standing all alone outside, crying inconsolably.
Lu Jing hesitated for a moment, a frown quickly forming.
"Mommy, mommy, where are you?"
The little girl cried and called out.
"Where are her parents? How can they leave a child alone?" Li Wu was frantic.
The commotion outside had grown fierce, and someone had been slashed with the fruit knife.
But Lu Jing couldn’t hold back, couldn’t bear not to act, and dashed out without a second thought.
Li Wu’s eyes widened in shock:
"Jing’er!" she exclaimed.
Lu Jing moved quickly, reaching the little girl and scooping her up:
"Don’t be afraid, auntie will protect you."
"Waaaah, Doctor Auntie, I want my mommy!"
"Mommy will be back soon, no more crying."
The child’s piercing cries drew the attention of the assailant, and upon spotting Lu Jing in her white coat, the attacker’s eyes reddened further, temples bulging with veins:
"A doctor? More like a beast, I’m going to kill you!"
After roaring, he charged with the baseball bat raised.
Lu Jing still had a child in her arms, making it very hard to dodge.
The bat struck down with force; had it hit, the injuries would have been severe.
But how could a woman possibly evade a man’s full-on assault?
Seeing the bat about to strike down, Lu Jing’s first reaction was to clutch the little girl tightly to her chest, turn her back, and close her eyes.
One second passed...
Two seconds passed...
Three seconds passed...
But the expected pain did not come.
