Chapter 55: Chapter 56: Wait for Adulthood, Then Snatch Her

Tears welled in the Beastmen’s eyes as they stared at the forest, now a ruin scorched by a blazing fire. To think that this lush woodland, which had once gifted them with so much food, would end up like this.

Everyone knew this sudden inferno was an act of arson. The tribe responsible for it deserved to be hacked to pieces!

Ling Hong remained rooted to the spot, staring at the scene before him. Veins popped on his clenched fists as he slammed them violently into the ground.

The blow left a deep crater.

’This is all my fault. I underestimated the enemy and left. I didn’t protect her...’

A few of the males took two steps back, their gazes filled with shared grief as they looked at the man with bloodshot eyes. "Lord Ling Hong, An Jin is gone, we can’t get her back. If we don’t leave now, by the time the other tribes finish trading, no one will want the little food we have left. And if we run into the heavy rainy season on our way back..."

"Just a little longer... Give me half a day more..."

The man’s voice was raw and hoarse. Ling Hong had never imagined he could be so utterly fragile.

He despised himself for this weakness.

Amidst the panicked gazes of the Beastmen, Ling Hong finally rose. He was the backbone of this group.

His knuckles were white and strained on his tightly clenched fist. Blood flowed from between his fingers, dripping to the ground with the weakening rain. The man’s expression, a mixture of determination and fragility, did not waver in the slightest.

He turned to face the other Beastmen.

"Give me half a day more. If I can’t find An Jin, we’ll leave."

The rain began to pour again. Mi Yin carried An Jin to a hidden cave. The entrance was small, concealed by low-lying thorny bushes and draped with thick, hanging vines, making it very difficult to spot.

Rainwater lapped at the entrance. The inside of the cave was damp and dark, a mess of dirt and decay, and reeked of a foul, earthy stench.

Mi Yin tidied up a little, making it just barely habitable enough to take shelter from the rain, before carrying An Jin inside.

He transformed into his massive serpentine form, scooping the female up by the waist and settling her into his coiled tail. Beneath her, he placed the soft Snake Shedding he carried with him.

Mi Yin’s upper body pressed naturally against hers, a long arm wrapping around her waist. His scarlet, forked tongue flicked out, touching her cold cheek.

To be honest, An Jin wasn’t a fan of soft, squishy creatures, let alone a giant python like this. But because he was her savior, she didn’t show any disgust at his intimate touch.

Seeing that the female’s expression remained neutral, Mi Yin hid his secret delight. Then he saw her rubbing her flat little stomach and realized the female was hungry and needed to eat.

"I’ll go find you something to eat."

Before An Jin could react, his snake tail uncoiled, placing her on the Snake Shedding. Mi Yin transformed fully into a black-and-red python and slithered out of the cave. 𝑓𝑟ℯ𝘦𝓌𝘦𝘣𝑛𝑜𝓋𝑒𝓁.𝑐ℴ𝓂

Snake Beasts thrived in damp environments, so the rain didn’t affect his hunting speed at all. He quickly returned, his coils wrapped around a dead wild boar.

Suddenly, his serpentine pupils contracted. His body froze, and he turned his head to stare grimly at a large group of Beastmen searching in the distance.

’They’re looking for the little female.’

An idea stirred in Mi Yin’s heart. He silently used the cover of the tangled trees and dense branches to return to the cave, letting the rain wash away both his and An Jin’s scent trails.

His upper body shifted back into human form, and a large amount of water sluiced off him, flowing out of the cave along the slight downward slope of the floor.

From his inherited memories, he knew that females needed to eat cooked food. Ignoring the searing heat on his fingertips, Mi Yin quickly started a fire. The half-damp wood produced a thick, black smoke that was incredibly acrid.

Mi Yin glanced back and, sure enough, the female’s face was flushed red from the smoke. She was coughing nonstop, tears in her eyes, pressing against the wall as she tried to get to the cave entrance. If she got soaked by the heavy rain, she would get sick.

He quickly coiled his snake tail around her, pulling her into his arms and farther away from the fire.

At the same time, he flicked his tongue out warily, glancing outside the cave. He didn’t sense the group of Beastmen being drawn over by the black smoke. ’This heavy rain is truly wonderful.’

It took a while for the firewood to burn off the black smoke. An Jin’s stomach had been growling with hunger for some time, and she wanted to use this chance to hurry up and prepare the boar meat for roasting.

’Forget about salt and spices.’

’But there isn’t even a Stone blade. This life is impossible.’

"I’ll help you. Use my scale." Seeing her helplessness, Mi Yin came forward and took the prey. At the same time, he plucked a red scale from his underbelly and used it to pierce the boar’s throat.

Gushing blood instantly soaked the boar’s fur. In a few quick moves, Mi Yin used the scale, still attached to a thin piece of flesh, and his fingernails to strip the boar’s hide completely, leaving only a bloody skeleton and meat.

A clap of thunder exploded outside, lighting up the cave as if it were day. This skinning scene was as gory as something from a horror movie.

Mi Yin subconsciously glanced back and saw the female staring with wide, pale-faced eyes, a lingering panic reflected in her pupils. His heart sank, and his hands froze.

’...I scared the little female.’

Even though, as a Wandering Beast, Mi Yin didn’t think it was a big deal.

An Jin quickly came to her senses. She shook her head and pushed herself up. "Let me do it."

Under the Snake Beast’s anxious gaze, her expression returned to normal as she hacked the boar meat into several pieces. ’Cruel, my ass. Filling my stomach is what really matters. I didn’t survive a disaster just to starve to death.’

With no salt or spices, An Jin simply roasted the chunks of meat and bone over the fire. Her first bite was bland; the center of the meat was still uncooked and bloody.

Fortunately, however, the meat was firm and had a hint of saltiness, making it reasonably palatable.

After eating her fill, she let out a small burp and looked at the motionless Snake Beast, only to find him already watching her. Their eyes met, and after a brief pause, An Jin quickly turned her head away.

’What the hell? He hasn’t eaten a single bite. Why is he just staring at me while I eat?’

"Um, do you want some? It’s not bad." An Jin cut off a piece of cooked meat, thoughtfully blew on it to cool it down, and then offered it to him.

Mi Yin lowered his gaze to the roasted meat, a sweet feeling blooming in his heart at the female’s gesture. His forked tongue recoiled slightly as it touched the hot meat. Even though he preferred his food raw, he ate the piece from her hand in one gulp.

An Jin: "..." ’Holy crap. An abyssal maw.’

Seeing the grease still glistening on the female’s hand, which she hadn’t yet pulled back, Mi Yin leaned his upper body closer, extended his cool, slick forked tongue, and gently wrapped it around her fingers to lick them clean.

Goosebumps erupted all over An Jin’s skin. She shoved him away violently and jumped to her feet, but in the next second, Mi Yin’s snake tail coiled around her and yanked her back into his cold embrace.

A second before the female could erupt, Mi Yin looked down at her fluffy head and cleverly changed the subject. "After the rain stops, I’ll take you back to your tribe?"

His voice was tentative. He didn’t want to send her back at all—he wished he could keep the female by his side forever—but he was afraid of making her unhappy.

An Jin was stunned. She looked up, bumping her head against his chin, and rubbed her head with teary eyes. "Really?"

’Aren’t Wandering Beasts supposed to just snatch up any female they can get their hands on? The idea of sending one back is unheard of.’

Mi Yin rubbed her head as well. "You’re not yet an adult, and you’re too delicate. If I were to snatch you away now, you’d die easily."

"So what you’re saying is?"

The Wandering Beast had his principles. "I’ll wait until you’re an adult to snatch you away."

An Jin: "..."

She was so stunned she laughed, suddenly feeling like this snake’s logic was a little skewed. "So according to you, I won’t die so easily once I’m an adult?"

This time, it was Mi Yin’s turn to be silent.

According to his inherited memories, it seemed the mortality rate for a Snake Beast’s mate—whether an adult or not—was frighteningly high.

"So, do you want to go back?"
