Chapter 371: Chapter 247: The Beastmen’s Gifts and the Origin of Their Names

An Jin’s heart sank. ’Oh, crap. I forgot about that.’

’Did I... just bring up something painful for Mi Yin?’

"It’s fine. If you want to know, I’ll tell you." Mi Yin caressed her face and said nonchalantly, "But the origin of my name is different from theirs."

"Once, when I was a child, I couldn’t find any food. I was so desperate with hunger that I killed a Beastman I happened to run into. Before he died, he kept muttering a single word, over and over. I thought it was strange and wondered if he knew about my origins, so I took a name that sounded like it."

"What word?" 𝙧𝙚𝙚𝔀𝒆𝓫𝓷𝙤𝓿𝒆𝙡.𝒄𝙤𝓶

"In the language of the Beast World, it means ’demon,’ ’abhorrence,’ or ’terror.’ I only found that out later, after I integrated into a tribe." Mi Yin didn’t show much emotion, seeming only to hold a simple regret. ’If I’d known, I wouldn’t have picked this name.’

But An Jin’s heart ached for him. ’To be cursed like that, and yet he acts so nonchalant about it... Don’t tell me this poor kid... has been called names like that since he was little?’

Then again, he did eat the guy. It seemed only fair that the man would curse him a few times out of fear before dying.

An Jin found herself torn, wavering between pitying Mi Yin and not.

"KNOCK KNOCK—"

A knock came from the door.

Many Beastmen had gathered outside the castle. The cacophony of their various conversations passed straight through the thick stone walls and windows, reaching her ears.

"It must be the Beastmen who’ve come to visit and bring gifts." Ling Hong placed the three sleeping little ones into a small, prepared cradle. He then took a clean outer robe from a wooden chest and helped her change into it. "When a female successfully gives birth to offspring, it’s a very joyous occasion. The neighboring Beastmen and others will all bring many gifts."

He carefully fastened the buttons on her robe. "The Beastmen found out you were pregnant a while ago. They started preparing gifts back then."

"What kind of gifts?" An Jin felt a pleasant surprise, and a faint warmth spread through her heart.

"It’s hard to say."

He chuckled softly and thought for a moment before saying, "Everyone just brings whatever they want to give. It could be food or clothes, but I suspect most of it will be things for you and the cubs." As he spoke, Ling Hong gathered the outer robe she had been wearing, which the cubs had soiled, intending to wash it tomorrow.

"Then I’ll go take a look." An Jin started to get up.

Xi quickly pushed her back down. "Ah Jin, you stay here. I’ll go check it out. It’s probably nothing too important. I’ll go collect the gifts for you!"

"That... doesn’t seem right, does it?" Most of the Beastmen peering in from outside probably wanted to see her and the cubs. It seemed rude to take their gifts and then send them away.

"You’re still weak right now; you can’t handle that many people." Mi Yin wrapped his arm around her and pulled her into his embrace. He then tilted his chin up, signaling for Xi to go downstairs and open the door.

A moment later, a chaotic racket erupted from downstairs. An Jin figured Xi was happily collecting the gifts while fending off the Beastmen’s gossip and well-wishes.

Soon, it was quiet downstairs again.

Beaming with joy, Xi came upstairs hugging a huge pile of gifts. He opened the door, pushed aside the curtain, and stepped inside.

"There’s so much stuff, and it’s heavy!"

He dumped the gifts onto the table all at once. There was barely enough room, and a couple of small items fell onto the rug. Xi picked them up and opened them.

"These seem to be some smoked Stone spices." Xi took two small black stones from a yellow wooden box, lowered his head to sniff them, and then held them out for her to see. "They smell pretty good, nice and fragrant! Ah Jin, if you like it, I’ll put it in the incense burner, okay?~"

"It is very fragrant. I quite like this scent," An Jin said with a nod.

After Xi set up the incense burner, the faint aroma of incense filled the air, creating a soothing atmosphere.

He then unwrapped all the remaining gifts.

Just as Ling Hong had predicted, most of them were supplies for a mother and her babies.

"Here are some little fur booties. Can the cubs wear these? Oh well, I’ll set them aside for now. And here are some little hats and paw mittens, these should work..." After sifting through everything, Xi packed the less important items into a chest, leaving out a few things they needed right away.

"This is a type of milk-fruit melon..." He picked up two large fruits with two pieces of paper stuck to them. "This one’s for Ah Jin. It says here... it can increase your milk supply? ’All the females who’ve used it say it works.’ For real?"

An Jin’s lips twitched. "..." ’What is all this random stuff? These Beastmen really will give you anything.’
