Favorite of the Beast-world: I Got Rich Through Farming-Chapter 27: The Sorrow of the Rootless Beast
A familiar sound drifted from the distant jungle.
Xi knew An Jin’s footsteps by heart. He gave a cheerful flick of his tail, sweeping the bloodstained water and fish carcasses far down the river.
In the blink of an eye, he had cleaned up all traces of his hunt, leaving no sign of what had happened.
As the female approached, Xi saw the changes in her body and was utterly stunned. Her skin was delicate and completely revitalized, making him yearn to reach out and touch it.
"Ah Jin, you’re so beautiful! You’re truly the most beautiful female I’ve ever seen!" Xi nibbled on his fingertip, his fair little face blushing pink as he peeked at An Jin, his eyes filled with delight.
’He’s really laying on the flattery thick.’
An Jin shot him a speechless look. "..."
’This Little Merfolk’s sense of aesthetics is a little skewed,’ she thought. But since the changes were indeed so obviously pleasing, she didn’t say anything more.
"It’s all thanks to your Shark Pearl." She handed him the Stone Bowl filled with dried meat in thanks.
Xi knew the Shark Pearl could enhance one’s charm, but he’d never expected the effect to be so dramatic on An Jin.
Seeing the little female’s eyes curve into crescents and her small white teeth flash when she smiled, looking so charmingly naive and cute, an irrepressible impulse suddenly surged within Xi.
’Damn it, I want to crush Ah Jin in my arms, drag her back to the Deep Sea Palace, and hide her away in some forgotten corner...’
But this greedy, twisted fantasy lasted only a moment before it was shattered by the sight of that hateful, crimson snake mark on the female’s arm.
A sinister, ruthless glint flashed through Xi’s eyes, gone so quickly it was impossible to catch.
’I have to get rid of this snake mark!’
He forcibly suppressed the venomous killing intent festering in his heart.
Xi sneered inwardly, his expression shifting in a flash. He looked tenderly at the female before him, his eyes welling up with tears. A mist gathered in his damp blue pupils, and teardrops clung to his curled lashes. "Ah Jin, I have some other business to attend to. I might have to leave this area and return to the deep sea soon..."
"I’ll miss you, Ah Jin." Xi sniffled, tears streaming down his face. "So, so, so much! You can’t forget me, Ah Jin! You can’t!"
"Okay, I won’t forget."
She promised, but a question lingered in her mind. ’Merfolk like Xi usually live thousands of meters deep in the ocean. Why would he travel so far to this plain?’
But she didn’t like to pry into other people’s private affairs.
An Jin handed the Stone Bowl to Xi. As she lifted the leaves sealing the top, a rich, meaty aroma flooded their senses.
Xi swallowed hard. "I-Is this for me?!"
When the little female nodded, warmth bloomed in his chest. A tingling sensation spread through him, and overwhelming joy filled his entire being.
Xi feigned calmness as he took it, cradling it reverently in both hands. The meaty aroma was incredibly tempting, yet he couldn’t bring himself to eat a single bite.
For the next several days, Xi swam nonstop, day and night, from the river tributaries of the Lalu Plain back to the cold, silent deep sea, doing everything he could to shorten the journey.
Thousands, even tens of thousands of meters down in the deep sea, the scorching sun of the outside world was completely cut off. It was perpetually dark and bone-chillingly cold.
For days and nights, Xi ate nothing. By the time he returned to the Merfolk Tribe, he was ravenous, yet not a single piece of meat in the Stone Bowl had been touched.
Xi planned to ask his Mother King for a way to dissolve a mate bond.
He couldn’t care less if the Snake Beast became a rootless beast. What he wanted was a female mate who belonged completely and utterly to him, and him alone.
They say that rootless beasts are the most cold, unfeeling, and brutally cruel species in the world.
But in truth...
...the Merfolk, who have always dwelled in the Ice Deep Sea, are the world’s truly cold-blooded and selfish species.
They are cloaked in the most beautiful skin, masters of disguise who lure in their prey. Beneath their harmless facade lies a heart hardened to its very core.
Xi felt no pity.
And so, he certainly wouldn’t consider the sorrow of a rootless beast.
