Chapter 229: Chapter 168: Kelp + Energy Ore + Hard to Tame

An Jin had just left the cave when she ran into the Beastmen from the gathering team who were looking for her.

"Lord City Lord, where have you been? We’ve been searching the area for you for ages and couldn’t find you."

A female named Hua hurried over, anxiously circling An Jin. She patted her full chest, still shaken. "We thought you’d run into a wild beast! We rushed over, following the scent, and found a lot of blood splattered on the grass."

"Don’t worry. I just went to gather some supplies and wandered a bit too far."

An Jin took a basket from Hua’s hands and walked beside her. Glancing at the rugged path ahead, she began to lead the Beastmen out of the mountains. "I just found a child in a cave," she said. "He’s badly injured. It looks like he fought a Demon Beast. The bloodstains must be from that."

’But what was one of Ze Sheng’s feathers doing there?’

"An injured Beastman child? All alone in a cave? Sounds like an abandoned cub," Hua sighed.

An Jin paused. She could see Hua had more to say but was hesitating, so she waited quietly for her to continue.

"There are a lot of irresponsible Beast Fathers and Beast Mothers who abandon their cubs in the jungle to fend for themselves, whether it’s due to a lack of food or other reasons."

An Jin had expected someone as kind as Hua to look heartbroken, but instead, she just shrugged. It was hard to tell if her tone was one of resignation or disdain. "I’ve seen it happen many times. But when people can barely feed themselves, no one is going to adopt an abandoned cub."

Just as she said that, she turned to An Jin. "If you can’t bear to leave him, Lord City Lord, you could bring the child back to the city. But—"

Hua pressed her lips together, her gaze dropping. She looked utterly helpless.

"Cubs who are abandoned in the jungle and grow up there... most of them are bloodthirsty, short-tempered, and incredibly vicious. They bite! They’re like true wild animals. They’re not so easily tamed."

’Short-tempered, vicious, like a true wild animal.’

’Isn’t that exactly like the child I just met?’

A strange sense of motherly pity welled up inside her. An Jin nodded and, after a moment of thought, said, "The child is badly hurt. I’ll go back tomorrow with some medicinal herbs and see if he’s willing to come to the city."

Hua nodded too, happily walking beside her. Bathed in the twilight glow of the setting sun, the group’s silhouettes slowly vanished down the rugged mountain path.

They returned to the city before nightfall. Wisps of cooking smoke were already rising from countless homes. On her way back, An Jin bought some vegetables from the small stalls, which were gradually growing in number again.

Before she even pushed the door open, the fragrant aroma of food filled the air. Exhausted after a long day, the scent made her mouth water. "Ling Hong! I’m home!"

She happily pushed open the door, only to walk right into a chest as hard as stone. Wincing, she rubbed her nose. "Isn’t the Great Hunt about to start? Why are you back so early...?"

"I came back early to cook for you." Ling Hong pulled her inside. His timing was so perfect it was as if he’d been waiting right by the door for her.

’He would always finish his hunt early and rush back to have her favorite meal ready for her.’

It was a habit he’d developed ever since they became mates.

"Where did you go playing today? You’re covered in dirt." Ling Hong took the basket from her, then picked her up and sat her on a stool at the table.

"I took the gathering team for a look around the nearby mountains. And believe it or not, we discovered a lot of edible plants today!"

An Jin was too hungry to even bother changing her clothes. She immediately picked up her chopsticks and shoveled a few mouthfuls of rice into her mouth.

’Ah, eating really is one of life’s greatest pleasures.’

The Hunting Team must have had a good haul today. Ling Hong had prepared huge platters of roasted meat for her, glistening with fat and coated in either honey or a rich sauce.

But after a while, the richness became a bit overwhelming.

An Jin took some seaweed she’d bought on her way home out of her basket. She had Ling Hong wash it, boil it, then rinse it in cold water and slice it into thin strips. She then used her chopsticks to eat it alongside the roasted meat.

"Why do you like eating this stuff? You actually like eating grass from the sea...?"

’I haven’t been starving my mate, have I? Even though that snake isn’t around, my hunting skills are still top-notch.’

Seeing his mate so happily munching on "grass," his handsome, silver-white brows furrowed deeply. A look of confusion crossed his ruggedly beautiful face.

"Grass from the sea?"

An Jin couldn’t help but laugh. She managed to swallow the food in her mouth before saying mysteriously, "Where I come from, we call this ’seaweed.’ It’s not just some ordinary grass from the sea. It’s full of nutrients, and eating it regularly is good for you."
