Chapter 140: Chapter 115: The City’s Preliminary Infrastructure

The female he had longed for had finally returned. Xi’s eyes welled with tears as he rushed over, wanting to throw himself into her arms.

"Ah Jin, you’re finally back!" His voice was choked with tears. "I missed—"

Before he could finish, a dark shadow flashed before his eyes.

Gu Yin sent him flying to one side with a single blow. His scarlet, snake-like pupils narrowed dangerously as he let out a warning HISS.

Xi was furious but didn’t dare say a word. He could only scramble up from the dusty ground and shoot Gu Yin a fierce glare when his back was turned.

Ling Hong took the lead, directing the massive throng of tribesmen to move the goods. They worked until all five large storehouses were stuffed to the brim, leaving the Beastmen both ecstatic and anxious.

Never before in their lives had they seen so many supplies—so many that even the storehouses couldn’t hold them all.

In the past, they had only ever seen the tribe’s storehouses so empty that not even a scrap of rotten meat remained.

Since the storehouses were full, An Jin distributed the remaining supplies to every household. Families with more males, pregnant females, or newborn cubs received a larger share.

After several tiring days of travel, An Jin finally returned to her own cozy, large wooden house. Everything inside was neatly arranged.

Dried flowers and herbs were placed by the window, and potted plants grew in the corners, giving the space an inviting warmth the moment one stepped inside.

However, she had forgotten to close the window before she left. A lot of dust, withered branches, and fallen leaves had blown in, and the air smelled a little damp. It seemed Xi had also gone off to play in the water after she left and hadn’t been staying in the house at all.

"Let’s hurry up and clean the house. There’s barely any room to stand."

Without taking a moment to rest, An Jin grabbed the broom and mop from the corner and called for Ling Hong and Gu Yin. The three of them began a major cleanup of the wooden house, which had been uninhabited for over half a month.

The broom, woven from a type of thin, soft vine, was quite effective at sweeping up withered branches, fallen leaves, and dust.

The mop was made by tearing a piece of ordinary tanned beast hide into long strips and tying them to a stick. It was makeshift, but it did the job.

Dust quickly filled the air.

In the light streaming through the window, fine particles could be seen dancing and spinning in the air.

"COUGH, COUGH—" An Jin coughed, covering her mouth and nose. Her face flushed. The thick dust irritated her lungs, and it felt like some had gotten into her eyes.

"You go wait outside. We can handle this," Gu Yin said without turning around, instead using his long tail to gently coil around her and escort her out the door.

"Okay."

An Jin didn’t argue. She placed the mop and broom by the door, dusted herself off, and called back to them, "I’m going to the grass shed to see if the Wild Grass Birds have laid any eggs. I’ll be back in a bit."

"Be careful with those wild birds. Their pecks really hurt."

Ling Hong’s voice came from behind her.

Before she even reached the shed, An Jin could hear the frantic CHIRPING of the Wild Grass Birds from a distance, mixed with the THUMPING and FLAPPING sounds of them fighting over food.

"...It stinks in here! How can you all be so messy?" An Jin said, pinching her nose as she carefully made her way into the grass shed.

The shed hadn’t been cleaned in over half a month, and the piles of grass were littered with stray feathers and bird droppings.

An indescribable stench hung in the air.

An Jin felt there was nowhere clean to step. A quick scan revealed quite a few round, fist-sized bird eggs hidden in the piles of grass.

Glimpses of white peeked out from between the withered yellow grass.

An Jin picked up a few eggs from a nearby spot, planning to make some steamed eggs the next morning. Just as she was about to turn and leave...

"CLUCK, CLUCK~"

A bird, so plump it was practically glistening with fat, came into view.

’This one looks perfect for roasting.’

An Jin licked her lips. She hadn’t had roasted chicken in a long time. She stuffed the eggs into the Beast Skin Bag at her waist, then tiptoed over.

"CLUCK CLUCK CLUCK!" She grabbed the Wild Grass Bird, pinning its wings together. As if sensing its tragic fate of ending up on the dinner table, it struggled desperately.

A mess of dark brown feathers was quickly shaken loose, littering the ground. 𝒻𝑟ℯℯ𝑤𝑒𝑏𝑛𝘰𝓋𝑒𝓁.𝒸𝑜𝘮

Just as An Jin was lifting the bird to head outside...

...several other Wild Grass Birds behind her shuffled their claws rapidly. They watched her with wary, beady black eyes, then suddenly flapped their wings and leaped up, preparing to peck her.

Although these birds had been raised in the tribe for a long time, their wild nature had not been completely tamed, and they had a tendency to bully the weak.

They couldn’t win against the Beastmen, but when it came to a seemingly defenseless female like An Jin, they would peck viciously the moment they got a chance.

Fortunately, Ling Hong had been worried. After finishing the house cleaning, he had hurried over and saw what was happening. He immediately pulled her into his arms for protection, snatching the two leaping Wild Grass Birds by the neck with one hand.
