Chapter 302: The unusual friend.

Chalice.

Tip top... tip top... the sounds of water dripping from a dark corner of the godforsaken cell kept me awake, reminding me of the shit which was now my reality.

My stomach protested due to the insane hunger that no one seemed to care about. Because if they did care, they would’ve known better than to feed me with a loaf of bread and a glass of water once every day.

Mind you, I am a pregnant woman in the middle of my second trimester, and yet, they treat me like this!

I lowered my head slowly and closed my eyes, hating the foul stench of the damp walls and the equally wet floors. The smell made me slightly nauseous, but does anybody care about that?

Of course not!

"You have a guest." A guard’s voice snapped me out of my reverie, causing me to raise my head up a little too quickly. The motion made my head spin but I quickly recovered and frowned.

Frowned because I do not have guests. I never had.

I was the cursed one. The evil one. The one whom everyone had forsaken for my so called wrongdoings as if they didn’t have larger stinkier skeletons in their closets.

Confusion and anxiety coiled tight within me as the sounds of heels flitted into my ears and as the silhouette of a woman came into view, my frown deepened significantly.

I hissed; "Who are you?"

But the woman didn’t respond right away. She didn’t even behave like one who had heard me speak. When she raised her head to meet my gaze, I noticed to my bewilderment that she looked somewhat familiar in a strange kind of way.

Maybe it was her eyes or the way she carried herself, but I knew that I had seen her before. I had felt that aura before... had seen those lips.

As if noticing my confusion, she beamed a smile at me and waited... like really waited until the guard turned away and left— which was also strange because they weren’t supposed to leave me with a total stranger.

I shrunk into my chair and asked again; "Who are you?"

But just like the first time, she didn’t respond. She crouched low in front of me, ignoring the wet floor and all the filth as she drawled; "I told you I would come back for you."

Her voice... her voice sounded familiar. Too familiar. It took me a moment for me to place where I’d heard it before and when I did, I gasped; "I know you..."

"You started the fire for me... you helped me escape..." she drawled softly and then went ahead to start laying so many promises at my feet.

She mentioned hurting everyone that has ever hurt me. Talked about how she is a witch and asked me for a name— the name of anyone who I wanted out of the picture.

I didn’t fully believe her but without thinking it through, I said the first name that came to mind; "Leilani Sinclair," and she nodded stiffly before rising to her feet.

"Consider it done then, bitch. You want her life right? And I’ll give you just that," she said, and with that, turned away to leave, only halting in her tracks when my voice rang out— desperate and pleading.

I rushed out; "No matter what happens, never hurt any of the alphas. This thing between Leilani and I should remain between us. You can try to get them out of the way but do not... Please do not overly hurt them. Do you understand me?"

"Okay."

She didn’t like my conditions, I could tell, but from the stubborn set of her chin and the defiance in her eyes, I also knew that she wouldn’t break our pact.

But now, I am not so sure anymore.

Because ever since that day, I haven’t heard a thing from anyone else besides her, not even a beep. Everyone was fine; hale and hearty. Well, besides Leilani who got into an accident a few days later.

—And now, I do not know if that was all her or if it was a coincidence.

All I knew was that I was glad, and that it served her right. 𝚏𝗿𝗲𝐞𝐰𝚎𝕓𝐧𝚘𝘃𝗲𝐥.𝐜𝚘𝕞

Back to the present.

Leilani was still not out of my way yet but has now been in a hospital bed for months instead, battling between life and death; And frankly, I do not know which is funnier—

The fact that Leilani, the almighty and strong Leilani was hanging onto life by a thread. Or the fact that she could easily just ’surprise, surprise everyone!’ And get better just like she always does.

The thought made my lips curl in disgust. It made my skin crawl and my body shake with rage so raw, it nearly rendered me red-blind.

I pushed my now rotund self— thanks to my big baby bump— to a sitting position just as the gates to my cell creaked open and I frowned when I saw that it was a guest.

A familiar guest.

"You—" was all I could manage to say before she dismissively waved her hands in my face and drawled;

"It is almost done."

And frankly, I had no idea what she was talking about. I wanted to argue with her about how none of what I asked for seemed ’almost done’ but as soon as I parted my lips, I instinctively slapped them close when I remembered that she’s been helping me the past few weeks.

She had been the reason my hair had miraculously begun to grow back after that fire-induced alopecia... but in a shiny shade of silver now.

She’s the reason I felt safe, healthy and strong despite all the mistreatment I’ve been forced to endure.

My voice shook slightly as I looked into her deep shiny eyes and asked; "Who the fuck are you? What’s even your name?"

And as usual, she didn’t respond just like she always never does. In fact, I had almost begun to think that this conversation was over when she leaned close and whispered in a voice so small, it sent chills down my spine.

"Get ready to lose your baby next."

I froze. "Why?"

"Because I am giving you the life you’ve always wanted. Leilani’s life... and afterwards, I’ll be on my merry way like we never met."

"What did you do this time?" I couldn’t help but ask, hating the way my voice trembled and when she cast her eyes on me, I could swear that I felt my blood run cold.

She shrugged at me, her expression the perfect depiction of unfazed, then smirked; "I made death come to her faster. That’s all."

And with that, she turned and left, leaving me to wonder what the fuck she meant by that.
